Almost had as much fun as the quarter balancing trick Saturday. Two Blasts in a sea of cow flesh and chrome is always a good way to start a ride. Webe and I went to New Bern Harley Davidson's Toy Run and decided to ride our wives' Blasts. We had a good time people watching and having them watch us at a distance. There were 600 bikes on the run but only the two Blasts. Most kept there distance before the ride but Webe knows a lot of leather clad patched types. We were at a costume party complete with the masks and we did not come dressed in the right attire. I was wearing my Olympia Jacket and First Gear pants and everyone else sacrificed a cow. Well Webe was also in a textile jacket thought it said Harley on it and he was in assless chaps. He just had to fit in.

I think having the leathered patched types talking to us and the ride itself broke the ice as the riders were a little more open at the end of the ride. I do not think they we're expecting two guys on Blasts to actually know how to ride and for the little bikes to keep up. Truth be told the little Blasts pulled away from several big touring bikes riding two up.

Anyway it was a good ride for a good cause. I now have some more respect for the folks at New Bern HD. They know how to put on a good ride and had the gasket for the M2.

If anyone from C3 is interesting in going to Homecoming this year, check out the page on Storm Fronts. They really need people to commit and pay their $35 before 12/28 so they can put down a deposit for the banquet room and keep the rooms they have secured.

I'll start a thread in our own Adventure Folder.

Bishop,

That is way funny and way freakin' cool! Sadly I missed seeing the CR display 666 today as I was braving the cool temps going to a party. But I'll be damn sure to catch it displaying 1313 - as I have with every bike I've owned. If I was riding on 17, who knows, I might have seen ya.

So is it too early to start planning for Homecoming?

NEVER too early to plan, but apparently too early for me to put in my vacation request, as I forgot to do it last week. I'm just trying to figure out when I'm leaving. I typically leave the weekend before so I can catch up with my long time (old gets mis-interpreted too often...) friends before Homecoming. Realizing that most of my long time friends are soon to be displaced elves may make my it a bittersweet experience for some.

The short of all the above is that I usually leave these here parts the Saturday before Homecoming starts.

However, maybe we can leave early afternoon on Friday and stop over at and pick up Prior... Just throwing stuff at the wall and seeing if it sticks with that idea...

Most importantly, if you are planning on going, PLEASE register and pay before December 28th so we can guarantee that what is currently planned will happen. If the needed number of paid reservations for the banquet are not received by December 28th this will all turn into what should've been.

So, PLEASE, help to make it a reality if you are planning on going!

Now that this Buell, err... I mean Homecoming Service Announcement is over I return you to your normal programming,

Happened to be in Bonsal today when the Christmas run of the New Hope Valley Railway was doing their Christmas run.

Unplugged my heated gear when I was taking the picture and noticed it was getting cold about a mile after I left. I pulled over to plug it back in. I have developed a procedure for doing this that includes putting the kick stand down. I decided that was too much trouble so I just winged it. Of course I dropped the bike while I was fumbling for the plug. Into a ditch. : ( Yes it is possible to lift a Uly out of a ditch by yourself. No damage, which I was thankful for.

Great, can you clean up the CBR section???

Anyway you want to do it, your discretion.

After that tackle the Quick Board and get rid of any thread that violates the terms of usage, wait a minute, that would delete 90 percent of the quick board.

Oldog, U4euh and I have been talking about maybe having a New Year's Day Ride. Since New Year's Day falls on a Friday this year, we could do a New Year's Eve party here at our house Thursday night and then ride Friday and/or Saturday.

Last year we played the Wii and Playstation with the kids and Webe's family. We really had a fun night. So once again, kids will be welcome, but be advised that we will have beer and wine.

We are limited on bed space, but do have a pull-out sofa and several air mattresses if anyone wants to come and stay.

If the weather sucks, drive on over and we'll figure out something to do, right or wrong!

Let us know if you'll be coming so I know how to plan.

Kristi & Carlos

Kristi,

I won't land back in New Bern until about 7:00 p.m. New Years Day, so I won't be able to participate in a New Years Day ride. If only I had known when I made my airfare reservations. But the good news is I'll likely have sobered up after New Years Eve by the time I land in New Bern...

This weekend, Mr. Nance, was BAH! After going to the 2nd Annual Non-Work-Sponsored Christmas Party in the freakin' cold that was here last night (I rode with a colleague, in his Exploder) I woke up early this morning and felt crappier as the day progressed. But I'm getting my game face on for another workday tomorrow. You know the one don'tcha? The one that looks like you're gonna crap your pants, or just did...

And to this point I've only taken some Mucinex to get rid of the gooey green goblins, so this post was entirely un-medicated.

Hard to believe, ain't it, folks?
1313
P.S. Now that I've so eloquently shared my thoughts it's time for some medication (Oh, nurse!) and a good nights sleep.

Old Dog, this year is the first year I am going to make it all the way to homecoming. A few years ago I lead Brankin through a short cut on his way to Homecoming. We stayed at Jim's house in Cincinnati (Kristi's Dad) over night. The next day Brankin made it to Wisconsin and I headed back.to NC a couple days later. It is 650 miles to Jim's house from our house. It's a great ride through the mountains. That is more than half way to Wisconsin.

Carlos,
Perhaps we'll be riding up together! I may have a stop in Detroit for a wedding the weekend before Homecoming, but will be in East Troy for the party!

I'm camped out in Phoenix for the week for class, going to be a certified excavator mechanic come Friday and hopefully slug a beer or three with Bartimus. I am then headed to Anaheim CA to visit Grandpa Prior, 92 years old, living by himself yet and enjoying the hell out of life. Heather's flying out to CA on the 18th to meet him as well and spend a few days with the Prior side of the family in CA. I haven't seen Grandpa in 4 years, since my grandma's funeral in 05, and haven't been to his place in CA since the start of the RANE ride. This is going to e a very special Christmas for us all!

We'll have to all get together sometime this winter for a shindig, even if it's not on two wheels. I'll offer up my place for sure!!!

Hope everyone has an awesome Christmas and I hope 2010 is great for you all!

I've only done it in one day once, and that was a hell of a long ride.

I've ridden up to the area twice this year, and what I did was leave after work and spend the night in Charlestown, WV. It is a reasonable ride from Charleston up to Wisconsin. I think I was in Chicago by 2:00 PM, which would put you in East Troy between 4 and 5.

If you're coming from Wilmington, Charlestown might be too far if you're leaving after work (I get off at 4:00) but if you took off at lunch it would be easy.

Brankin how many miles / days is it from your place [ newbern area ] to East troy?

Your mileage may vary...
I've ridden 3 different bikes to and from on the 'Carlos shortcut route' and each bike recorded a different overall mileage for the trip. The newer bikes with (assumed) more accurate speedo & odo readings have been roughly around 1,000 miles. I customarily make the trip in 2 days. When our defacto director - Dave - is available I spend the night at his and Pauletta's place, although at 725 miles (recorded on the V-Rod) from New Bern it makes for a long day. But it sets up an easy 2nd day with just over 300 miles left to get HOME. A
nd Hwy 52 to Dave's place is the reward for the long day of travel.

YMMV... Nance's 940 miles from Raleigh to K-Town puzzles me. I'm right around 100 miles out of Raleigh in New Bern and Kenosha is about 45 miles from East Troy (if you know the County roads/backroads).

As for the route, well that'll take a little while to document. But the gist of it is that since I am enroute to my destination I prefer to make time on the Interstates as much as possible. A good diversion is Carlos's shortcut on the AA Highway (sometimes 2 lane highway, but most times 4-5 lane highway) which follows the Kenfucky/Ohio border on the Kentucky side up to Cincinnati.

So from New Bern, Hwy 70 West, picking up I-40 in the general Raleigh area, somehow getting to I-77 to I-64 to Grayson, KY to get to the AA Highway, I-275 around Cincinnati (towards the airport both when going up and coming down?!?! I guess the airport is somewhere in the middle...but I've never noticed it...). If I'm going to Dave's I get off anf take some REAL NICE motorcycle backroads up US52 to Dave and Pauletta's place. Then to I-65 North out of Indy (avoid I-65 South out of Indy - it's BORING!) to I-80/I-90 West to Chi-Town and gamble on which route around or through Chicago will be the best - either I-294 around Chicago or I-94 through Chicago (more on this later), and once in Wisconsin stick on I-94 until exit 333 (It's only half evil...) which is Hwy 20. Hwy 20 will take you right into East Troy in about 30 minutes or so, and there are a couple of good riding areas on Hwy 20 as you get close to East Troy, however I prefer to take County Road DD just before I get to Waterford and enjoy some better riding areas on County Road DD which takes me to Hwy 120. At the corner of DD and Hwy 120 you can see one of the ski hills of Alpine Valley. Not sure if it's the one Stevie Ray Vaughan met his demise when his helicopter crashed... Turning right onto Hwy 120 takes you (in about 2-3 miles or so) to Buell Drive.

There are some *gaps* in those directions (like getting to I-77), but it should be pretty easy to piece in the missing details with a map, whether paper or electronic.

Hope this helps some - but we can firm things up as the date gets closer,

This is how Google says to get there:

Which surprises me as it's longer than the route I usually take, which I originally got from google:

which is pretty much how I get there. It is better to go around Chicago, but I can never figure out how to do that when I'm coming from this direction. I had not discovered the painters tape map trick for any of these trips, so I just had to memorize interstate numbers.

Anyway, that is how I have gone. I wouldn't claim it's the best way or anything, but it works. One thing nice about staying in Charleston, is that the ride out is on 35, which is non-interstate and reasonably pretty. You get on interstate at Dayton, but by then you're ready to make time, so it works.

My GPS took me on a slightly different route going up this year. I ended up going into SE Ohio, kinda like your second map, and I was amazed! I thought Eastern North Carolina was desolate - How WRONG I was! Thank goodness I didn't need gas in that area.

The following picture is of a fax that came to one of the fax machines at work today and it really made me laugh. I don't know if it's just the first sentence, or if the kicker is the second sentence - "Again.".

Fax

It only took me a few minutes to figure out someone keeps forgetting how to dial a fax # in Germany in order for this to happen.

If anyone needs a clue I won't be able to offer it until I get back from a last minute business trip to Pennsylvania.

I should be home late Friday,
1313
P.S. Maybe I should post this over on the FAIL thread... But that, too, will have to wait until I return.
