California motorcycle smog testing may be coming... from Dealernews.com:

California Senator Wants to Smog Test

A California state senator has introduced legislation that would require motorcycles to participate in the state's vehicle "smog check" program.

Sen. Fran Pavely (D) is the main sponsor of the bill (SB 435) which would require all motorcycles beginning with model year 2000 to be tested starting in 2012.

The smog check program was designed to service cars. Because of that, motorcycles were to be exempt "until the Department of Consumer Affairs implements test procedures applicable to motorcycles," according to standing state California state law. Under the new legislation, the department is to prescribe test procedures for motorcycles by July 1, 2011.

Pavley represents Senate Dist. 23 - including portions of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties - in the California Legislature. She was elected to the Senate in Nov. 2008 and was immediately appointed to chair the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee.

Prior to her election to the Senate, Pavley served three terms in the California State Assembly, where she championed AB 1493 (Clean Car Regulations), now known as the "Pavley" law. It is projected to receive a federal EPA waiver early in 2009, clearing the way for implementation of the most stringent truck and automobile fuel efficiency and emission standards in the nation.

A former public middle school teacher, Pavley was also the first mayor of Agoura Hills. She served as a mayor and councilmember for four terms.

That would become a real pain in the a$$ for a lot of us. You might want to send an email or letter to your state representative.

Hey all - it's RACE weekend at Willow this weekend. Higbee will return Sunday again to DOMINATE the Twins classes. If he's got TOO MUCH MONEY to burn (it'll cost him one more set of tires), he's likely going to be racing the Formula One races where he'll be racing against unrestricted Superbikes on the 1125R.

Come on out!!!

(yeah, I'll be pretending to race too)

Let me get this straight Rob. You want me to ride my Buell to work on Friday (I do that anyway) and instead of splitting lanes all the way up the 405 from Irvine to Long Beach I come to your store, hang out with a bunch of other folks that ride, eat free pizza, listen to a band and maybe win a Buell jacket. F'n A!!! I'm in. Anybody else wanna join up behind the Orange Curtain and get a lesson in splitting lanes? See ya next Friday.

The odd month SCAB ride is this coming Saturday. Eric and I and a couple others are doing a track day at Willlow Springs that day, so Scott Page and Andrew Scammon are doing the ride coordination. The plan is to ride the twisties between LA and the track, have lunch at the track and spend a short time there for folks that haven’t done track days to see what it’s all about, and then head back to the twisties. Scott sent me the following:

Al, I just got off the phone with Andrew. I am not any good using Google Maps other than to ID a location. Here's what we planned....we will meet at Glendale HD Buell. Kickstands up at 9:30am. Then, we will slab it to 8578 Foothill Blvd., a Union 76 Station, which is 3 blocks west of Oro Vista Ave. (we will use Oro Vista Ave. to get to Little TJ.) Kickstands up there at 10am. At the T intersection of Little TJ and Angeles Crest Hwy, we will turn left and head up to the 14 Freeway, then up to Willow Springs.

Glendale HD/Buell: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&g eocode=&q=Glendale+Harley+Davidson&sll=34.164972,- 118.232006&sspn=0.218737,0.299377&g=glendale,+CA&i e=UTF8&ll=34.124257,-118.255484&spn=0.003419,0.004 678&t=h&z=18

Union76 station on Foothill: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&q =8578+Foothill+Blvd,+Los+Angeles,+Los+Angeles,+Cal ifornia+91040&sll=34.124257,-118.255484&sspn=0.003 419,0.004678&ie=UTF8&cd=2&geocode=FfXCCgId5ZTy-A&s plit=0&ll=34.259717,-118.3199&spn=0.006828,0.00935 6&t=h&z=17

It’s about 20-25 minutes from Glendale to the Union 76 station, so if you’re going to meet at the Union 76, be there at 9:50 or so.

Eric and I will see you at the track. Normally, they'll charge $10 to get into the track, even just to eat lunch, but if you send me or Andrew your name, we can fax a list of names that will be on the ride and they won't charge. If you even THINK you'll be on the ride on saturday, send email to Andrew at calidrew at charter dot net (formatted to thwart the spambots) and he'll make sure your name is on the list so you don't have to pay to get in (you'll still need to sign the liability waiver at the gate)

Well, no one showed up at the meet locations (except Andrew who had to work), but I had a nice ride up to the track and joined Eric, Al and Brian at Willow Springs. Brett rode over from Santa Maria, and it was nice catching up with him.

The wind was a blowing, but the races kept going. Eric and Al had new leather outfits and both got to scratch up the knee pucks on the track. Willow Springs is such a cool place to watch or participate in track fun.

Sorry, I missed the SCAB ride, but my Sportster riding buddy and I were out of town crisscrossing California on the Pasadena MC Club's 2-day Greenhorn Road Tour (click the flyer link).

It was a beautiful weekend weather-wise and we covered some great roads like SR-150 from Santa Paula to Ojai, SR-33 from Ojai to SR-166 (past the Songdog Ranch turnoff), SR-58 west from Taft, Bitterwater Road with its free range cattle roaming, scenic Indian Valley Rd, Peach Tree Rd & SR-198 east to Coalinga on Day 1 to the mid point in Visalia.

Then the route took us on some roads that Fearless Ferris probably wore grooves on: Yokohl Valley Rd, CR-J37 (Balch Park Rd), SR-190 west to Porterville, Old Stage Coach Rd, Mountain Rd 109, Jack Ranch Dr, SR-155 (FB's Bostrom Hwy!) to Wofford Hghts, SR-178 to Bakersfield, Wheeler Ridge Rd to I-5 and home.

All in all it was about 750 more miles of 1125R break-in smiles.

Wish all y'all would've been there.
Maybe next year?

I was toying with the idea of riding over but it was my youngest's b-day (sleep over) weekend.
Wow Sparky, wish I'd known somebody had a ride like that going in my neck of the woods. On second thought maybe it was good I didn't know of it as I still would miss it and be bummed. If you get the chance next year post up an early flier (if it becomes an annual event).
Those are some of the best motorcycle roads on Earth.

The "storm" sure wasn't, it was sunny all day at the track. A bit windy, but no more than usual at Willow. Eric, Brian, and I had a great day with no off track excursions.

I got to learn why all track bikes need a puke can..the constant near red-line activity had the breather filter on the SV650 spraying oil all over the bike and me, hopefully little got on the track. A red bull can and a couple zip ties kept me going for the day. I emptied about 6 ounces of oil from it when I got back to the shop.

Besides the wind it was a perfect day to be at Willow. I got a gopro hero wide a couple weeks ago and recorded a couple of sessions. Here is a lap with Ebear and Al makes an appearance. With the wide angle lens it does distort the image a little in a "objects are closer than they appear" sort of way.

Well this is the first time posting a video on the web can't seem to get the embedding right so here is the youtube link

Yup, SV650....

The SV was Joanne's bike. She low-sided it a couple years ago, took me a while to get it fixed. Now that we have the shop XB9s back from mapping duty (it was up at Terry's shop for a couple years), that's Joanne's bike, and the SV is now my track bike. Why not the other way around? Well, the XB9S is all done up with pretty stuff, and the SV has a few scars. If I'm gonna pitch a bike down a track (never what you want to do, but always a possibility), I'd rather it be the SV.

As SVs go, it's a pretty nice one..Penske shock, LE front end, black widow exhaust, Scotts stabilizer, and a bunch of other farkles. Still was the slowest bike on the track that day. Gixxers and R1s were passing me like I was standing still all day long on turns 7/8 and the front straight.

We'll be back to the roads of Octoberfast this October. The plan is for the American Sport Bike BBQ to be up there, kinda like Octoberfast. We're working on the details now, will publish something soon.

Frankly put, I see your point, but I'd think considering your business, you'd take the risk. Not taking a Buell on the track speaks volumes to those that are watching. You're not doing Buell (and its faithful) any favours by using a bike thats in direct competition to the Buell. I also think your missing a great advertising opportunity.

FWIW: I've spent more on racing a Blast at the track (actually building it and having someone else race it) than it would have cost to buy an XB, strip it down as a dedicated track bike and way more than it would have cost to just buy a Jap bike and run it.

Please take this post with the utmost respect. I do what I can to point people towards American Sport Bike, your fine customer service and selection of parts. Your events have been first class. But....

Gearheaderiko....(great name by the way!)
If you saw the shop bikes up close you would probably understand! Slathered with Carbon Fiber and all the goodies ,they are the coolest rolling sales catalogs and you wouldn't want to pitch them down a track either! Now , if there is a banged up Suzuki standing there....it just makes the Buells look that much better!

Still not getting it. I could understand anyone whowasnt in the business doing that, but I'd really have a tough time 'understanding' if the Glendale boys showed with a Ninja. Used XB's are cheap, tubers are cheap, Blasts are much cheaper.
I really dont mean or want to be a 'jerk' about it, but if it hasnt been said it needed to be. I just know what I see and what I hear from quite a few non Buell/HD riders and wannabee track riders. Its a tough enough sell as it is to get people to consider Buell as a 'real' sportbike and buy one, let alone take it on the track.

Buell is the only reason I've been out to and on the track and why I 'sponsor' a rider.

and so when they see the beat up Suzuki sitting there you get to hear "thats my track bike".......hmmm

I guess...but believe me, my performance on the track isn't going to sell anyone on a Buell. In fact, I'm probably doing Buell a favor by NOT being the slow guy on their bike.

I'm not racing, it's just a few track days a year. The SV is paid for and fills that need.

American Sport Bike isn't really focused on racing as much as general P&A anyway. If it was, I'd probably have a couple decked out Buell RACE bikes and a sponsored rider.

FWIW, American Sport Bike carries Ducati and Aprilia parts and accessories.
Not to beleaguer the point (and certainly not for Al's benefit, he gets what I'm saying) I assume you dont work for or are in any way associated with sales of Buell or HD.
If Glendale showed up with a Ninja in their stable, (I'd loose a lot of respect) I think it would hobble Ernie in trying to sell a Buell as he explains what the Kawasaki was doing under the tent. I'm sure Buell would be less than enthusiastic if Higbee showed up on a Suzuki and imagine the buzz if Jay Springsteen or Scott Parker showed up with an Ascot in tow.
Its not uncommon to see Ducatis at a Buell/HD dealership either (Montana Buell/HD has at least 20% of their showroom devoted to Ducati, Buell got 4 bikes and a rack!)
Yes, I get that Buell riders own other brands too(not counting Harleys). My point was that if your business is selling HD/Buell (in some form), then showing up on another brand, especially a directly competing model, is not helping your business and doing quite the opposite.

Shawn Higbee has said he and his crew will be camping with us all at the Love Shack for the Laguna weekend!!!

Buy those Higbee Racing T-shirts and get them signed by Shawn, Marianne and Mitsu and consider yourself a sponsor of Higbee Racing for the weekend.

Details to follow but hey, how cool is that - ??

Hey, we rode with Erik one year at Laguna!

I know some really twisty winding back roads with little traffic that could be strung together to make an epic day ride from Bartels' to Laguna.

He's gotta be there before we get there - he's got his hands FULL getting both bikes ready for both classes. If he rode up, it would mean he'd have to have Mitsu and Marianne hauling his trailer and gear up for him... unless you were talking about riding up Wednesday night.

I'm afraid he's going to have to miss the ride.
