Be careful out there guys: http://piratenews.org/warning-to-bikers-on-deals-g ap-dragon129.html Maryville Daily Times April 13. 2008 The Tennessee Highway Patrol is kicking off two special enforcement campaigns aimed at areas known for dangerous driving, including part of U.S. Highway 129 in Blount County. Thanks to funding provided through the Governor's Highway Safety Office, troopers will be cracking down on drivers who break the law on a deadly stretch of U.S. Highway 129 in Blount County known as "Deals Gap," as well as in the Shady Valley area of Johnson County. "A similar initiative conducted along Deals Gap last year resulted in a decrease in deadly crashes," said Department of Safety Commissioner Dave Mitchell in a THP release. "Rigorous enforcement programs are effective, and our goal is always to protect the motoring public and save lives." [Ed - and killed 3 bikers during the Dragon Surge in 2007] |

Matt The speed limit is posted at 30 MPH. Last year they where showing their asses. I under stand this year enforcement is more civil. But with a 30 mph speed limit in an area that engineering rules would dictate 55 mph it is hard to be positive and supportive. There are other rodes to ride, Cherohala(over a mile high), Hellbender,a mornings run down to Blood Mountain and Wolf Pen Gap to name just a few. The LEO's were leaving the Dragon at 1800 each day. Make sure you have all your papers in order. If you want to monitor it more closely checkout Deals Gap forum. Joe |

OKAY, okay, i don't have to ride the dragon's tail.. i don't have to race the 11 miles, or the 318 turns... i do have my papers in order, but i'd rather not have to prove it to a uniform, not to mention i'd rather not make any new entries to my driving record. i would not consider myself an expert rider, but seasoned. started riding in 2001 (mostly summer, but one wet, wet winter) i would not consider myself the most responsible rider, but i can restrain myself for brief periods of time, or until i can find the appropriate location, at the appropriate time, in the appropriate company. i would me more than happy to ride Cherohala, Hellbender, Blood Mountain and/or Wolf Pen Gap in addition to or as a substitution to deal's gap, however, i think i would regret going all the way out there and not being able to say "I rode the tail of the dragon" i do appreciate your warnings, and will heed your words of caution. i'm just looking for a serious riding trip. i definitely plan to go, and when i do i would enjoy the company of others. |

Matt It doesn't take a racer to ride the Dragon, just not a place that I would bring a beginner though I'm sure many have and you don't sound like a beginner to me. You will enjoy the Dragon, and it would be a shame to be so close. The early May time frame is out for me. But will be willing to go if able. Until then enjoy stay below back ground. Next time the guys come up to 14 go along you will enjoy it. Joe (Message edited by bad_karma on April 24, 2008) |
