Jim, you're in for a lot of work. The Buells prior to 2003 had a cartridge style transmission. You pretty much just pull off the primary cover, unbolt some things, and go. Beginning in 2003, Buell began saving money (I'm guessing) by eliminating the opening in the primary and locking the tranny in the cases. You have to split them to get it out, so the whole damn motor has to come apart.

Sanchez-exact reason I'm asking! Got the manual out to read up on it, Holy Crap! I new would have to split the cases, but the work that goes on in there after that is what made my head hurt and ended up closing the book and start considering other avenues. I love to try to do all the work on the bike myself, but never having had a v twin apart B4, I'm outta my league as far as tips and tricks! I know I could do it and get it done, but I am one that firmly believes that riding season never really stops, which means I want to be back up ASAP!

Wow, you are in for a project! I personally have never done one but I will look into the manual today and see if I can give you some pointers.

I have rebuilt a number of manual trannys for cars so hopefully they will be similar!

I'm thinking the main problem would having all the tools, room, and time to do it. Not to mention patients! If I had to go that far into the engine, I would be doing everything else I could afford to do also, like freshen the heads, new rings, ceramic bearings, the list goes on. Of course the price keeps going up as well. Wish I could be of help. I will if I can, but I'm pretty limited with tools, talent, and patients.

Jim, My case was split to do the tranny in my 03 and SMHD found the crank was fixing to go as well, new rings, crank and a new gear set while they had it open. Good luck.

Advice on case splitting:

- The belt drive sprocket on the right side of the motor is held on by a gigantic nut. Take it off first. I can attest from personal experience that trying to remove it while the motor is laying on the ground with the shift linkage off, no leverage, and no easy way to get the tranny in gear is tough.

- The rear isolator blocks the screws that hold its mount in place. You may be able to get it off with ball head hex drivers. We ended up just cutting the heads off the bolts when we dismantled Will's.

The rear isolator bolts will come out with long ball end hex sockets. I almost broke my Snap-On ones so buy 2!

It's a spinning cube of desktops! And check out the animations when I move windows around or minimize, restore, or close them. How can you not be impressed by a window that folds itself into a paper airplane and flies away when you close it?? : )

Dang, I really need to learn me some puter skills.

**WARNING, WHINING BELOW**

I stood at work today from 8:30 to 5:30 and did 3 oil changes totaling 1.2 hours billed. I went to work for $20.40 today. Most of my day was reading Badweb, Georgiasportbike, Blokessportbike, Over T.W.O., killboy, craigslist, ebay, autotrader, and Verastar salvage auctions cruising for crashed Buells.

The most exciting part of my day was watching 7 Gwinnett special ops and 3 county trucks shut down most of 29 to investigate the fatal crash that 15 year old caused racing a month back.

I was in Atlanta, off North Ave. boarding up foreclosed on properties before they become crack dens...The sconces by the front doors were already gone and the AC units are in big cages made outa 1" welded square stock...Busted hump to get outa there before dark. Traffic sucked though, so I got that goin for me. If I were on 4 wheels, I'd still be out there.

INTERLOPER RUN!

Barker (Matt Barker), 86129squids (Brad Hardin), Maximum (Steve McElhenney), and I will be invading north GA again this weekend. We'll be hitting TWO around lunch time and will be riding the loop and such until dark. We're staying in Helen for the evening. Let me know if you guys will be out and about or would like to join us for dinner. We're staying at a chalet in Helen.

We'll be heading up Sunday morning to make a run or 10 on Deal's Gap and Cherohala Skyway.

We'd love to get a chance to ride with you guys again!

Thanks to Ann's famous fried chicken, and Matt's famous Nugget, I got tires!
I wanna go up and ride with y'all.
Only thing is I'll have to make it up on Sunday. Ann has to work Saturday, and won't get off until noonish. I've got to toast up the last of my old tire, and swap to the fresher skins.
But we'll definitely make it up Sunday.
Can't ride the Gap, but will be up at TWO at first light.

Hey Jeremy, swap your days. Hit the Gap on Saturday, then come ride the loop with us Sunday.

My camera and I have a date with Glitch's old rear tire on Saturday. I'll be out on the loop Sunday. I'll have a passenger, so nothing heroic, but we'll both have cameras, and I have a video rig we can put on one of your bikes.

The only problem we have is that Maximum is coming from Ft Rucker Saturday morning. Suches is 80 miles closer to him than Robbinsville. It would also mean that we'd probably hit the last part of the run to Helen in the dark.

I'll check with them and see what they say.

We're gonna be at the Dragon on Saturday and I might could go to No. Ga. Sunday....I'd sure like to thrash the Buell after riding a 1972 Honda all day Saturday I'm thinkin'. What time Sunday? Is first light still at 11:00 am?

Hey watch out for the Leafsters...The news has been talking like this weekend is going to be the weekend for looking at fawkin' leaves. hopefully the $3+ a gallon will discourage many.
