Back from Road Atlanta safe and sound.
Good to see you again Tim! Had a good time shooting the breeze in front of the coppers with you.

I gotta say, Camp WAHU was VERY dissapointed with the scene this year at R.A.
There were at least 4 Hall county cops/K9 units at the turn 5 corner at all times after dark. There was absolutely NO shenanegans allowed or tolerated all weekend. In fact, friday night at 10:45, we were told to go to bed by one of the officers... we reminded him that quiet hours didn't start until midnight.
We got all kinds of dirty looks from the law while we sat in our camp and laughed and joked.. it was really pitiful.
We reverted to fishing for people with a dollar bill tied onto some fishing line... our little ruse was discovered quickly as the fisherman in charge thought that he could attract a catch by moving the dollar bill as they walked by.
Although the party scene was completely non-existant, it was good to hang out with my buds and have some fun.

The racing was fun to watch, but I did leave early on Sunday and missed the action in the afternoon.

After the WAHU crew discussed the situation, we have decided that we probably won't be back to road atlanta. It has been a long run (our first outting was around 1993, and went every year with the exception of 2), and I guess all good things come to an end... it is a bitter sweet ending to an era. I poured one on the curb before I left, and said goodbye to camp WAHU...

Had a great time riding yesterday! We do need to do that more often! The Tiger did an outstanding job, though it is no Buell!

Was that one of you guys? I was pulling on to 78 going east. Tried to wave, but you didn't see me.

Day four: Another day with the family

I decided to stick around another day with my cousins in Westfield, NC. The field car had some fuel delivery problems and wouldn't go wide open throttle, so we spent the day fixing it. This was some serious redneck engineering. Check out our scrap yard fuel cell:

After 3 different fuel pumps and some urban plumbing, we got it running pretty strong.

The dust was incredible.

Here's my cousin's friend Bob on his RM250. That liquid cooled 2 stroke gets up and moves! He let me take a few laps on it, and I'm in love.

My cousin's son runs WTFO on his little 80:

Day five: On the road again

I headed out of Westfield about 11:00 AM this morning. Having nowhere to be and no deadline to get there makes me happy. I headed up highway 8 to the Blue Ridge Parkway first. The last few miles of 8 have some great curves on brand new asphalt. Tuesday is a great day to ride the Blue Ridge Parkway. What little traffic there was mostly consisted of experienced riders and drivers. I wasn't speeding, and I actually got passed by some cruisers.

The scenery wasn't quite as nice in VA as it was in NC. There were still some good views, but there was also quite a bit of civilization to be seen. I didn't get quite the same feeling of isolation.

I rode the BRP north through Jefferson National Forest then cut west on highway 501. 501 was a lot of fun. There were a bunch of 20 mph curves, but the speed limit was 55. You can really push it down the mountain without getting a speeding ticket through there.

I'm stopped for the night now in Staunton, VA. Tomorrow, I'll head north west across the Shenandoah Mountains and see where the road takes me.

I'm having a shitload of fun. The ankle's doing alright. I spent Sunday and Monday walking around the field in those Alpinestars, and I didn't have much trouble. They at least look broke in now. : )

> Sanchez, when are WE going back!!

I'm already planning a return trip for next year! It'll probably be the week of July 4th next summer. You're all invited.

> So far so good!

Hey, she looks pretty hot. When's she turn 18 again? You don't own a shotgun, do you?

Hmm, I may just have to roll home through Suches. I really want to abuse a Super Duke.

Sanchez, Those boots look broke in and then some.

This time next week I'll be in Virginia at V.I.R getting twisted on the 1125R and hanging with the Buell/PTT crew. I'm going to get it all on video too. This is going to be fun...They said I'd have to ride/demo the 1125R between sessions. I think I'll manage.... LOL!!!!

Day six: Allegheny mountains

I headed out west from Staunton through Churchville to the Allegheny mountains and into West Virginia then broke north on highway 219. 219 is 55 mph for most of its length and has some great sweeping curves as well as quite a few 25 mph turns. I spotted a sign saying, "No trucks without permit" at the junction with highway 150 and decided I needed to see that. I guessed the sign meant some really tight curves, but it actually turned out to be a 22 mile stretch of the Highland Scenic Highway through Monongahela National Forest. It wasn't a challenging ride, but it had some of the most amazing scenery I'd seen so far. The wide open road made me want to speed, but the views slowed me back down.

150 connected back to 219 south of where I'd been before, so I turned back north and completed the loop. 219 was mostly fun except for the town of Elkins, which seemed like an interminable stretch of speed zones and stop lights. At Parsons, WV, I took a left and rode northwest on highway 72. 72 is another good 55 mph highway. The road condition was spotty in places, and I found gravel in quite a few right handers, but it was decent overall.

72 connected to 50 east, and I enjoyed the hell out of that one. I had some of the most pure riding fun of the trip on the climb up Cheat Mountain. It's a 3 mile stretch of 90 degree switchbacks with wide lanes and no gravel whatsoever in the corners.

50 crosses the southern tip of Maryland, and that's where I am now. I made a detour north when 50 crossed over 219 again and found a nice hotel in Deep Creek Lake, MD. The hotel clerk gave me the AAA rate as one motorcyclist to another. He has a Concours with 100k miles on it!

This morning I'm heading east on 50 again, and I'll eventually wind up on the Skyline Drive.

Man, I'm really roughing it tonight. I'm staying at a lodge in the Shenandoah National Park. There's no net access for my laptop, and my phone barely has enough signal to browse the web! How primitive. I feel like a regular Robinson Crusoe.

Chris, you'd be proud of me. I hiked a mile and a half to photograph a waterfall.

More tomorrow when I can get my laptop online and don't have to type with my thumbs.
