Chirp, chirp???

Thump, thump...
Is this thing on???

Gonna' try my best to take the Stein' (minus fairing) out for a "romp" tomorrow.

Just from my short trip last weekend, I can tell that the speedo is waaaay off, and the chain needs to "wear-in" with the sprockets.

She flung all kinds of aluminum colored goo from the packing grease in the chain combining with the aluminum ground from the rear sprocket. Looked just like anti-seize, but cleaned up with the wipe of a dry rag.

The only issue is the fan that thinks it's a tambourine. I have a replacement here already.

Ya'll cats have a good weekend!

Alright Tank. Seems like the "Stein" is coming together. If you ever want to combine blood, sweat, grease, broken tools and wasted money; let me know. I'm an expert! I tried to change the tires and tubes on Scarlett last night. Big mistake! I even fortified myself with two 24oz Icehouses for the fiasco. Well getting the tires off the rim was not entirely awful, only two gouges in my finger from the sprocket. etting them on with the new Heavy Duty tubes however was not accomplished. I even managed to wring the valve stem off of the front tube AFTER installing it and both sides of the new tire. I'm going to need some larger tire irons or some serious anti-depressants for the next go-round. I'll be taking everything into my friendly tire professional this morning. It's worth the $20. I was trying to justify owning the skills to get myself out of a jam should one arise. I'll be out riding tomorrow and rumor has it the turtlehugger might make it out too. Come Monday morning I'll be out in the woods for the start of squirrel season though! NUTS

Nuts,
Not sure what all your using for the task, but a can of baby powder(in case of emergency any powder)will greatly reduce the effort.Where talking about the tires now.Everybody who rides beyond the boundaries of commercial help should be able to repair a flat or damaged tire. That being said, twenty bucks is a deal for the effort required with just tire irons.Charlie

Amen to that! I thought I might try to change the Buell tires myself.....Bwaaaaahhhaaaa.....NOT!
Worth every penny to have them done by the pros.

Actually the labor was $6. I bought a tube for $14. I do need to invest in another tire iron. The HD tubes are wicked hard to install: trailside I'll be using a regular tube. Maybe that'll be easier. New tires on Scarlett and I'm ready to roll in the am. NUTS

I've got the big tank on...

I had a "thing" typed up, but...
enough of that.

The Stein is at a point where I feel better about her the farther we go. Today I wished the fairing was on there cause the speedo said 100, but I know we were only about 80, and it felt like 120. Yes, I think the speedo is off that far.

Very, very stable at speed. I am still amazed. I let go of the bars at speed and it was like it was on the stand in the garage.....nothing.

JACKIE>>>PIT BULL WARNING
The bike almost slid off the rear stand today. I thought it was a myth, until I could see the bike creeping on the stand. It wasn't where I left it, I was like WTF, and it was still creeping toward the front of the swingarm. I cleaned the pads on the stand, and the bottom of the swingarm and it helped a little, but still wanted to creep down.

p.s. I had the sidestand off the bike at the time, for "maintenance".

Tank, NUTS usually secures the bars with tiedowns to a hook in the roof on either side of the bike. In case the stand lets go there is a reasonable chance it'll stay upright long enough to save some damage.

Charlie, your jab reminds me of a story from my youth. While briefing the football team Coach Smith has to pause to recognize the raised hand of one Bradley Joyce. With a look of utter contempt, for interrupting his "this is going to be a doughnut sale fundraiser speach" Coach Smith asks what Brad's question is. Before Brad can get a word out Smith hammers him with: "No Joyce, ya don't glaze you're own doughnuts!"

Evening Gentlemen!
Todays D/S ride was the best yet. We started out around 2:00pm despite the downpour of rain.
Nuts mapped out a "route" to get us up to Broad Run from the Daleville side but somehow we ended up lost on the backroads. While we are checking out his handy waterproof map this fella rolls by on his bicycle so I politely ask him for directions. As soon as he spoke I knew we wasn't going to get anything useful out of him. The guy was from Ireland and had come to the states to ride from Newport to Seattle, rough camping along the way. Super nice guy but I think he filled Jasons' head full of ideas of Trans American trail adventures.
Anyway, we get back on route and soon find ourselves at the entrance to Broad Run. Started out pretty smooth but then we began to encounter what can only be described as "trail ponds" with little recourse but to plough through them. Next was the 7-8 creek crossings which proved a little more difficult since the water was flowing pretty good due to the non stop rain.
At the end of the road we decided to turn around and run it again since it didn't seem the rain was going to let up and the thought of running 55mph on wet pavement with knobbies didn't seem real appealing.

On the way back we decided to hit this small offshoot and that is where the madness began. As usual the fun started with tentative little rides up the rough cut bank and then after a few test runs the speed increased and little bit of air time was had.
We moved on feeling more confident in our abilities and I decide to hit these "whoops" we had seen on the way up while Nuts wisely chose to stick to the trail. I hit the first one and all was right with the world. Come to the top of the second one and there, staring me in the eye is a 6-8ft drop into a funky little mudhole with another whoop too close to allow anything but a straight decent into the funk.
In the picture Nuts is standing on the other side showing the way I had came. The picture doesn't show it well but I was well and truly stuck down in there.

After Nuts stopped laughing at me we broke out some rope I had packed for just such an occassion and managed to pull her out within 10 minutes back on the trail and none the worse for wear.

By the time we got back to Daleville I was completely soaked to the core but glad we decided to go despite the typhoon.

Im beginning to worry about you. Nuts is supposed to be the crazy one. Still fighting with that "Mid Life " thing?I guess it is all cool as long as one of you retains a level head on these trips. Looks like alot of fun....Charlie

Charlie,
In all honesty I was a bit embarrased to be the first one to do a major bail on these things .
The guys over at Twin Valley have been saying to make sure someone goes with you on that trail and I had wondered why up until that point since it is pretty much what I would consider a beginner trail. I guess I know now because if Ole' Nuts wouldn't have been there the bike would still be in the hole.
Nuts is really doing very well about not getting sucked into acting a fool while I find myself getting a bit more bold and stupid each time we go out. Lord willing that will be the worst bail either of us will experience!

Ya'll are just having too much fun. I'm jealous.

There's Buellers coming out of the woodwork left and right around here. Looks like we have a "thing" going on this Sunday starting on the southside(norfolk/chesapeake/va beach), making a couple stops here and there(hampton/williamsburg) to gather up the masses(6-8 so far), and ending up at Poes pub in Richmond, hopefully meeting up with more Buellers from up there. After that, who knows??

Stay safe!

Alright Tank, spreading the Buell-love. Ask if anyone went to MB4, I met a guy named Ray while I was there and he seemed like a pretty good dude. Preliminary plans for another epic-ish dirt ride were just settled for Sunday. Hopefully my new gear will be here. Bigger sprocket, new bars, jacket, pants, helmet visor and spoke wrench. After Torts' get off Sunday I'm pretty sure his spokes need some attention. NUTS

I could use an "electric wench", if you have an extra.

A spoke wrench is an amazing tool when you need it. Only done a couple of "adjustments", but that $.99 tool could not have been bought off me.(I must admit that it was bicycles, and years ago)

Tank,
My reasoning behind posting the pics and ride reports is to drive you over the edge and force you to buy a D/S bike.
I know you said you ain't got anywhere to ride over there but a bi weekly or monthly trip to Roanoke would surely warrant the purchase of said bike .

You are lucky to have other Buellers to ride with. As you know Nuts has jumped ship and the only other guy I know who has one avoids me like the plague (Yeah Seth I'm talking about you ).

Nuts,
Your wheels only have about 26 hours left. If you want me to place a bid late tonight before I go to bed let me know what your max bid is.
I missed you at the cookout. I stood at that grill all by myself and cooked up 150 hot dogs and 7 chicken breasts for those youngsters. We only had 3 left after they got done stuffing their little mouths. I then made them do the potato sack race which, as I am sure you can imagine, went over like a lead balloon. For future reference full stomachs and jumping up and down in the heat doesn't go toqether especially well.

Charlie,
Has the racing season kicked into gear yet? Take a camera along this year if you can so we can check out some photos of you and your crew at work. It's been so long since we have seen you that my memories of what you look like are fading. Can't quite remember the face but I do recall you being around 6'3, a full head of black hair and a muscular frame that any 20 year old would be proud to have

Jackie,
If that's what you remember me looking like on those rides, we probably should have had you pee in a bottle before letting you ride. I haven't looked like that in forty years and it was blonde hair then, plus three inches shorter.
I wish I had time to take some pic's at the track, but something is always needing a little twick. But I'll see if the track photographer has anything I can send. Anytime you guys are looking for something to do, we could use some extra pit membersCharlie

They have an MX class that allows you to run knobby tires(much to everyone else's dismay)You and "Scarlett" could dazzle the crowdAs far as taking a lap on the race bike, well it doesn't have a kickstand but still I would be a little apprehensiveHowever after a few laps on "Scarlett" some brave sole might offer you a ride......Charlie

Jason, No go on the gloves, there were no gloves to be found anywhere in that giant store.

Jackie, My buell excursions of late include work, home, work, home, work, home, lynchburg, home, work, home. I have been relegating any recreational riding to the bicycles, much more fulfilling and I get to wear spandex.
