Alex,
That doesn't look like it belongs there.
Perhaps the previous owner attached it for some reason.
It isn't needed, it isn't part of the exhaust clamp it is attached to.

Ride was good. It was only CJ, Kim and myself. I think we still had a great time. Any chance I get to ride like that is great to me though. I was hoping to see more faces with us. Maybe next time.

CJ and Kim, I looked up the info the people on top of Valles Caldera were talking about and came across this much:
http://eol.jsc.nasa.gov/sseop/EFS/lores.pl?PHOTO=S TS062-100-195
Doesn't say anything about using it as a landmark, but it is recognized.

Alex, that kind of looks like a homemade safety wire for the exhaust strap or a homemade ground cable for the exhaust strap. Not sure why it would be there in either case, but I agree with Bart that it doesn't look like it belongs. Is it part of the cover you were speaking of maybe? A point to secure it to the bike and not just around?

Bart, Joel-

Thanks for the sanity checks, I was pretty sure it wasn't a part of the bike, or at least not a part that came from the factory.

The longer I own this bike, the more stuff I find where a previous owner changed or added or more likely removed something. I had a good feeling this was one of those instances.

Thanks again.

CJ and Kim, I also remembered to look up the weight of Gas. Roughly 6 pounds per gallon. Water is 8.3 lbs. The Sprint is also almost 40 pounds heavier than the Uly Dry. 462 to 425. If you have ABS thats another 7lbs.

Cybergeak- Actually it is part of the bike. Buell did a recall on all race system exhausts and added the safety wire as a precaution. Several of the welds apparently failed and dropped the muffler body on the ground in front, causing a fall. The strap should be attached to the front of the muffler with a rivet and also attached to the primary cover. Stop by Thursday or Friday afternoon and I can show you. It looks like the end you can see should be attached to the primary cover. I can also fax it to you. It's Safety Recall #0821 and is explained in Service Bulletin B-034INT. You might find it in the archives here.

Well, Sunday is coming. We are scheduled to ride TA/TP. That's pretty far north and the weather overall has been precipitous and cool. Anyone have any reservations?

Given the length of that ride, I'd say we need to be kickstands up from SFHD/B at 0900 or so.

Murrae...CJ...anyone with an XB...

Take a look at this picture. As you can see a screw came out of the brass colored hole that is right of the rear spring. I can't find any pieces but there was a moment where a heard something hit the cooling fan momentarily... My manual does not show this exact spot.

Can one of you be kind enough to look at your XB and tell me what you see there... Looks like there was a bolt in there. Not sure what it's supopsed to hold together.

Nick-
My Ulysses isn't set up the same way- all I have is the two outer screws that hold a heat shield for the shock. CJ will be your best bet- you need to see an XB9 or 12 R- sorry.
You guys have a great day tomorrow- Mabel is showing up. I'll be teaching until 4:00 or so. If Cyber shows up, ask him if he got the safety wire figured out.

Well, if no one else is gonna is gonna report on the ride. I will.

Sunday's ride was really quite nice. The weather was pretty, even if it was kinda cold. Since there was only CJ, Myself, & Mabel we opted out of doing the TP to TA ride and just rode the Jemez again. The road up there was in good shape, and we were able to enjoy a brisk ride. Prehaps, just bit a too brisk. One of us got pulled over just south of Jemez springs, luckly got off with a warning.

So it was a great day. Hopefully, we get even more people out on the next rides.

And Mabel and Kim were sure to point out that this was the first ride where the women outnumbered the men. Thanks for the backup.

I hope spring springs soon, because I'm getting tired of doing the same ride every week.

I need to take my bike in for service, too. That front tire is starting to worry even me.

CJ,

I have a brand new Dunlop 208ZR...make me a reasonable offer and it's yours.

Or are you running Pirellis?

Yeah, I'm running Pirellis. I like them a lot better than the Dunlops, mainly because of the mileage I get out of them. They seem to stick about the same.

CJ,

I've been trying to get rid of the 208ZR. I bought it and never used it since I went to Pirelli Corsas like the new XB9/12Rs.

I just want to get the Dunlop out of my garage and I'd be willing to let it go for HALF Price. The 208ZR is a good sticky tire and lasts longer than the old 207ZRs. Probably not as long as Scorpions though...

ANYONE LOOKING FOR A BRAND NEW DUNLOP 208ZR STICKER FRONT TIRE... Cheap... I want $60 for it.

Let me know.

ANYONE w/ and XB9/12R...(mine is a 2003 model)...can you check under your seats and tell me what goes in the brass screw hole on the fan housing... SEE MY POSTED PIC ABOVE...

I'd rather not have to check it in to Thunderbird for something like this.

Buellnick,
Just popped the seat off my 03XB9S and it looks like the empty hole in your pic. should have a buttonhead torx screw that looks just like the one to the immediate right of it, on the frame.

Hey Tim, THANKS for looking.
Does yours have a washer or is it just a torx screw? Mine has a larger outline that looks like a washer was on there.

I've got an extra torx screw so I guess I'll put one back in there. The screw doesn't seem to hold anything together. It may squeeze the fan housing for some unknown reason...

Thanks again.

Nice pics of a surprisingly snowy Valle Grande...

CJ, If your bike was down in that white stuff, you'd loose it.

Kim, Does your Sprint have ABS? Might come in handy on the damp patches.

Hi Mabel...

I just wanted to post this email from Dave about Lake City. I'm thinking that it is getting closer and anyone who is going, should send Dave an email to give them a heads up.

I'm guessing that they'll be staying at the Alpine Moose Lodge again. Great place and it is run by a French Chef. Needless, to say they have great food.

I'm hoping that I can get Sat. off so then I could head up Sat. and catch them in Lake City.

I went down towards Ponderosa today and turned back about 5pm. Just as I turn around, 5 cars in a pack and 3 racer bikes come blasting up fast behind them. I pull around the the 3 racers pass all 5 cars on double yellow with DO NOT PASS signs on a really short straight into a turn. Well guess what, we all catch up about 3 minutes later to find one of them missed a right turn and ran across the lane and up the side of the hill. IDIOTS! All 3 were standing and pulling the bike back down the hill. It looks like IDIOT lives another day to be able to crash again. Traffic was heavy, the other cars are lucky the IDIOT didn't plow into them head-on at that turn.

Hey Kim,
yea, I rode yesterday, just locally doing errands, and then down to the ponderosa for lunch.
I'm fixing to leave here in a little bit to do cedar crest.
I fly out again tomorrow for work, but will be back again on Friday night.

Have a good weekend!

OK, it's official. I can't go to Lake City. My sister-in-law is graduating High School on that Saturday and I have to be here.

Sucks.
