Tank,
Be careful what your jealous of. I'd give my left nut to be 33 again. That's something you can't get back.
I took my last job at 29 and spent 30 yrs. there.I thought retirement would be a lot better than what I've got.I spend enough on medications a month to finance an XBRR and it just buys me time.
Enjoy your good health, it's a great gift....Charlie

Charlie,
Whatchoo talking about? You are indestructable (or at least you ride like it ).

Tank,
You wanna see a fellow who can absolutely RAIL an XB then just try to follow Charlie on a twisty road. The man will leave you feeling like you are riding a tricycle. Don't let his mild mannered posts fool you. He has insane riding skills!
I have personally witnessed him school an entire pack of Buell riders and one of the big 4 superbikes that was with us that day.
A humbling experience to say the least.
I dare say he could rip it up off road as well from past conversation.

Charlie,
Nuts got the carb back and it seems to run smoothly with the exception of a loud metallic knock on the exhaust valve side. The rocker arm and valve stem appear to be fine. I am a bit concerned that the cam chain tensioner has been fooled with since when Nuts removed it there was no gasket which leads me to believe it has been removed before and is possibly missing pieces or malfunctioning.
If the tension was too tight on the cam chain could this be the culprit?
Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Jackie,
Thanks for the kind words, but you could get a fellow killed trying to live up to that kind of press.LOL It helps if you know the roads better than everybody else.
Does that little bike have a flat slide carb.? If so, they can make that kind of sound at a fast idle.Sounds like it's coming from the valves. Or the chain could be too loose and slapping. Take the air cleaner off and get the noise going and put your finger on the slide and see if the noise goes away............Charlie

Charlie,
Thanks for the encouragement! It comes at a time when it is much needed. Times are not hard, and work is not hard, but it's all taking it's toll. I threw a tool the other day because some jerkoff has his head too far up his ass to do his job, and I get the lucky task of fixing the f-ups. I have not been that angry at anything in 20 years.

It must be time for a break, but there is no relief in sight. We are short two techs at work within the last week. One fell out of the back of his truck and broke his arm. The other got rear-ended bad at a toll booth this morning. I'm being real careful.

Sorry for the vent.

Tank

p.s. the chain drive is almost there. I'll take some pics this weekend when it looks pretty.

Charlie,
The carb is your standard CV type carb and does not have the guillatine type butterfly.

Fellas' I had a close one today. I took the Bolt' out for a nice little spin around the city. Anyway I came to a stopsign and was waiting for a car to turn when I hear SCREEEECH! Look in my rear view mirror to see some freakin' boob in a black camaro come sliding past me from behind. Seems he wasn't paying attention and didn't see me sitting there. He then locked up the brakes and slid to a stop IN FRONT of me on the right hand curb. Needless to say I will be scanning the mirrors constantly from this day forward when sitting at a stop.
Guess I need to go wash my kevlar underwear now befor the poop stains set in permanently .

A lesson that can only be learned by the seat of your stained underwear, whatever they're made of. Glad to hear the underwear will be OK.

I broke another T45 today, trying to break loose a rear pulley bolt. She took a whole-lotta torque before she let go. And I mean A-LOT. Guess I'm just going to have to bite the tool-bullet, and buy the real expensive stuff. I shouldn't be breaking tools on this stuff.

Jackie,
If you turn the motor over by hand(plug out) see if you feel any kind of clicking or catch in the rotation. Any signs of the chain slapping inside on the alum. housing. Recheck your valve clearances. This is all a shot in the dark......Charlie

I'll see if we can get that checked out this weekend Charlie.
In all honesty I am pretty much stumped at this point. The shop installed factory size jets during the rebuild so I don't know if I should automatically jump to something else or still hold on to the "running way lean" theory.
I had mentioned to Nuts about the possibilities of the cam chain and the more I think about it the more I worry.
When Jason bought it the fella' said it ran but was rough and he thought it was timing related. That statement combined with the fact that the gasket was missing from the tensioner makes me wonder if he knew something and had attempted a repair himself. Throw in the fact that the previous owner bought the exact same bike to replace this one instead of having it serviced is leading me to a conclusion that I don't like.
I think it may be prudent for Nuts to take it to the shop where they have the proper tools and training before we make a potentailly bad problem worse.

Jackie,
Troubleshooting blind is not worth a lot. Does Nuts have a manual? He may need to check the cam timing. Could have gotten it off a tooth when the guy had the tensioner out. Does it look like the head has been off?................Charlie

Charlie,
He has the online manual but it is pretty basic covering simply oil changes, valve adjustments, etc..
I never really paid attention as to whether the head had been off or not so I'll look the next time I am over that way.
I agree about the troubleshooting blind statement. I think we have covered all the basic "go to" culprits and may quickly be coming to a grinding halt on our forward progression. Shame too because I was hoping to have a riding buddy this weekend for a journey into the wild.

I'm with ya, dude.
At this point the "stein" is truly "nekked", with no plastic/scoops/covers to hide anything.(I should take a pic) I'm afraid to dig any deeper for fear of finding something really wrong.

Stick with it, man. Sucks that you don't have a ride right now, but it will work out.

Maybe Jackie will let you take the Garage Queen out for a romp(or not).

Man you guys are cold .

Nuts,
Be cool man. I ain't saying your bike is dookie, just saying it may get to the point where it needs a trip to the shop. If the chain did jump it is fixable but some specialized tools are needed to do it in most cases. The shop could probably fix it for the cost of the tools we would need to do it ourselves.
It'll work out in the end Holmes.

Good day today!

Finished polishing the plastic, finally.
Did I mention that I hate polishing? I would rate it at 7.5 out of 10, compared to the solid 3/10 it was before. That plastic will take alot of abuse, and it can be fixed. I've never seen anything so White.

Got the chain sorted(sorta), put the new coil and wires on, mostly new hardware for the plastic, new traction grips, properly fastened oil cooler scoop, AND went after the header with some sandpaper.

The header was pretty rough, and still aint great, but when it "bronzes out", it should look decent.

Next on the list is the fiberglass fairing. Shouldn't be too much of a pain in the "glass". Just have to fix a couple holes, prime/sand/prime/sand, and paint(with stripes )

I'm not real creative or artistic, so I have no idea where to start with graphics.

Tank,
Where are the freakin' pictures man!!

I spent the day on the road less travelled. Only rode about 90 miles but my hind end is about to fall off! The rocky roads/paths sure put a beating on ya' when you are used to the smooth road.
Started of heading up Poor Mountain and I gotta say it is much rougher than it used to be. The rain has really taken its' toll and eroded most of the hardpack.

Once up top I decided to explore the little offshoots which resulted in much fun but sore muscles due to fighting the tight lanes.

It is still like February up there but the view was spectacular!!

After playing around for a spell I decided to take the backroads in and found this wonderful gravel jewel. The tunnel is running underneath the BRP.

Pulled over for the mandatory snuff break beside this neat little pond out in the middle of nothing. Up for a little trespassing Jason?

Finished the day by hitting the local pipeline trails which me and childhood friends made when we were kids. Ahh, brought back some memories!

Overall a very fine time and the perfect way to spend a nice Spring afternoon.

Cold, indeed.

Polishing stuff aint so bad.

Don't ever try to repair fiberglass. It's not so much work, but you will itch. Everything you own will itch. And the MANDATORY dust mask and goggles can drive a crazy person totally NUTS.

Done with the fiber-sanding, though. Now time for the resin patching, and reinforcing. This is the thinnest "glass" I have ever seen. Lightweight, but very fragile.

Almost time for pics.

Here's a pic of the chain mock-up. I've since drilled and tapped the idler for a set screw to keep it from working it's way out of adjustment. I'll be sure to take pics of that soon to be famous little mod.

Nuts gets the last laugh.
I came home, ate dinner, loaded up on muscle relaxers and went to sleep. Woke up a short while ago and had to wake the wife up to help me out of bed to go pee.
Looks like my offroad adventures are going to have to be limited to 75 miles or less unless I can figure out some way to keep from delivering the shock waves straight down my spine.
Bummer too because the little thumper is more enjoyable to ride. No worrying about dirt, rain, scratches, etc. like when riding the Bolt'.
THE AGING PROCESS SUCKS!!

This is the one for you.

Juke him down to $2000.00 and rode trip up there with the trailer to pick it up.
Sell the XT for $900.00 and you are only in for an additional $1100.00.
Sell the Mach Squirrel and Ithaca and the cost becomes even more bearable.
YOU CAN DO IT!!

Selling my treasures for different toys isn't in my particular plan. Besides, I really like the Mach Squirrel and the Ithica will be an heirloom. Not to worry, the letter goes in today and we'll get moving forward soon enough. NUTS
