Hey there JM have you ever taken the Uly over off of Southern in RR? I took my Suburban out there once and broke the right front axel...

I've taken mine off in the hills at the end of Pajarito RD in southwest Albuquerue. I put a few lousy pictures in the post back then. The pavement stops about 3 miles in. Then it's about 12 miles back over the mesa to the river. Actually it's another mile I think to the river. I stopped and changed directions. It's a dirt, fluffy soft dirt, sand, ruts, gravel. After about the 5th time I went up there, the day after Christmas I think, I dumped it in the 6" mud. Broke the right mirror off. Picked it up, DAMN it was heavy in the mud. I got it up and pushed it to a rock in the mud to lean on the kickstand. Picked up the mirror, glued it back on when I got home later. This isn't a 212# RM125! It sorta sucks when it gets real soft. The front wheel plows the sand, mud and deep soft dirt. If you stay in the harder packed part, it's super wonderful, soaks up the bumps. I was so amazed. The sand whoops are a little scary. heheh Just keep it moving. I took it up behind the jail too. I didn't know it was the jail there. I get closer and closer and I see barbwire. I go around and there's 7 people in orange jumpsuits cleaning up and big van with the sherrif logo. I was glad they didn't shoot me thinking I was trying to break someone out! heheh. They watched me though. Then I popped up on the road and went to the speedway about 2 miles down the road. Drove around the track a few times by myself. It was fun, but I'm not a racer. I wouldn't want to go do it with other people on the track. I drove back down past the jail and down the dirt and back home. They watched me again. They drove around the jail as I went around.

CJ and JOEL...

Just the other day, I saw a couple of kids on Jap sportbikes blow through a red light - apparently tempting fate.. they survived this time. Tis the season... Read some stats about new riders or seasonal riders getting back into it and doing stupid things...

Better but uglier than a Uly...beemer?

JOEL,
As for running tests with the oil and the cooling system (fan)... I'm not riding the Buell as much as the other two bikes these days. I'm not a good candidate for such a test.

The theory of thin oil, lower pressure, and lower tempuratures may have some merit. However, anything a 5w or 10w can do...a 20w can do better when it comes to wear protection (assuming you are in the right temp range for the oil weight. I would not use the 5w oil - 10w ok.

BTW: I use AMSOIL Series 2000 20W-50 Racing Oil - NOT THE MOTORCYCLE specific stuff - in the engine. The tranny gets MC oil due to the wet clutch. The engine seems to run cool and clean over the 5K...

Hope you solve the "hot" Uly problem.

Joel,

Check out Mobil 1 15w-50 4T Racing Oil... This is recommended oil by Triumph. Expensive but maybe worth it.

Although, I would make sure your cooling and oil systems are operating properly. I assume SFHD has given you a clean bill of health ?

JJ,

I actually live off Southern and take my 4 wheeler out to the end occasionally. I used to take my dirt bikes out there too. I would never attempt the Uly out there because it is just pure beach sand. Soft and deep. The Uly can handle a lot, but not that.

Nick,
Remember that the w stands for winter blend and the number preceeding it is the cold temp viscosity. So actually a 5w is far superior than a 20w at start up because you are not worried about heat, merely flow and lubrication qualities. My engine sounds way better now on start up too. The one to worry about is the 40 vs 50 weight. If you read between the lines in the book they say it's ok to use 40 weight Diesel oil if that is all that's available, but switch right back to HD 50wt as soon as possible. The truth is that any good 40wt Diesel oil meets the requirements of the engine for heat range and sheer stability. I am finding that it still cools the engine better too. My fan has ran a total of 5 times, all on shut off only, in 10 days of riding. Unfortunately, they are all short trips, but like I said I mostly use the bike for commuting and the fan was running like crazy before. So far I'm pretty sure it's a better choice for the bike. Just curious as to why you chose the racing oil over the MC oil?

Joel, et al
First off, sorry for the long write-up but this is an area of interest for me... maybe not for everyone on this thread...

I know 5w is better at start-up but the oil has got to be within specs for the entire operating range.

Oil is a compromise...thin enough to flow cold and thick enough at high temp. The base oil (say 5w) is treated with polymers to extend the range to 30, 40 or 50 SAE performance at high temperature. Generally, The light base oils that have been extended 30 points or more are making extensive use of polymers and that makes them less stable; in extreme temps and pressures these polymers are more prone to viscosity break down over a shorter period of time. When viscosity breaks down it breaks down across the range making your 5w oil something less.

One of the benefits of oil (particularly synthetic oil) that starts with a higher base weight is that fewer polymers a required to take the base oil up to the 30, 40 or 50 SAE standard and the oil is more stable across the range, over time. For the long haul, I prefer something closer to the oil weight specified. The oil manufacturers generally agree with this and you will find their recommendations in line with HD/Buell and other bike makers.

I seldom have any really cold starts and I prefer high viscosity oil in an HD/Buell motor that relies on air and oil as the sole source of cooling. You are absolutely correct that you will get better flow at start up and lower temps to a point until the polymers start to break down. The job of OIL is a compromise...

The oil discussion is a very interesting one... As you know, not all oils are alike. Check out the study at http://www.amsoil.com/lit/g2156.pdf. The ball-bearing wear tests and viscosity break-down tests are very telling. The use of Zinc based additives is also addressed. MC oils and racing oils also have more Zinc Phosphates.

To quote a petroleum engineering write-up... "Multi viscosity oils are one of the great improvements in oils, but they should be chosen wisely. Always use a multi grade with the narrowest span of viscosity that is appropriate for the temperatures you are going to encounter. In the winter base your decision on the lowest temperature you will encounter, in the summer, the highest temperature you expect. The polymers can shear and burn forming deposits that can cause ring sticking and other problems. 10W-40 and 5W-30 require a lot of polymers(synthetics excluded) to achieve that range. This has caused problems in diesel engines, but fewer polymers are better for all engines. The wide viscosity range oils, in general, are more prone to viscosity and thermal breakdown due to the high polymer content. It is the oil that lubricates, not the additives. Oils that can do their job with the fewest additives are the best..." "...20W-50 is the same 30 point spread, but because it starts with a heavier base it requires less viscosity index improvers (polymers) to do the job. AMSOIL can formulate their 10W-30 and 15W-40 with no viscosity index improvers but uses some in the 10W-40 and 5W-30. Other multigrade synthetics may not use VI improvers either."

AMSOIL is the only oil company that publishes results of standardized API tests on several motorcycle oils. I trust them and several other manufacturers out there... Mobil 1, SE, and other synthetics.

I use AMSOIL MCV in my V-Rod and in the Buell tranny.

I use the AMSOIL Series 3000 Race Oil in the Buell crankcase because it exceeds the high pressure ball-wear performance of the MC specific product...and costs about the same as the MC stuff of any maker.

I agree completely and it's all info I base my decisions on. I also have read all the Amsoil studies and have been a customer for years. It's is actually because of Amsoil that I started to question the use of 20w-50 in the Buell. Amsoil is also the reason I really started looking into the actual physical abilities of the oil and it's designed purpose instead of the simple weight of it. Many auto manufacturers are calling for lower weight oil nowadays because it improves fuel mileage and still does the job it is intended for. Obviously with the invention of higher quality oils we have created the need for a paradigm shift. I truly think the years of a Harley motor needing a 50wt because of being aircooled are long gone, but the motor company hasn't readdressed the issue. There have been many other air cooled engines for years in dirt bikes and ATV's that don't require 50wt.

Tolerances on SOME air cooled engines are comparatively "sloppy." This may have something to do with heavy oil recommendations. Multi cyl water cooled motors (and automotive engines) seem to be built with much closer tolerances which may explain why they recommend lighter oils. Oiling pressures and other factors are also different.

The Buell XB9R burned about a quart in 5k when new (w/SE) and about a pint after 22000mi w/AMSOIL.

Wife's air cooled Ducati has burned about half a pint in the first 4000mi and slowing down.

My Japanese and British water cooled bikes have had negligible oil loss and the makers recommend lighter oils...

Anyway - good discussion on oil.

Hello all...

Attached is a link to our 2007 ride calendar. Just wanted to drop a reminder that our first group ride is this Sunday, March 25th. Let's meet at Coffee At Dawn in Cedar Crest at 0930. That should give the Santa Fe crowd time to get down the road and the rest of us time to get around the mountain.

No need to RSVP, so I'll look forward to seeing everyone this Sunday!

Where are you? Are you back yet? I need a ride report on the MT-60's before I order a set. Call me, email, post in here, whatever, just let me know what you thought of them off road and how the mileage and handling is. Thanks for being the Guinea Pig.

Hey folks- yeah, I'm back. The ride was AWESOME. I'll try to get the time to put up some pics as long as I can figure out how to do it.

Some business first:
A call to support the rights of motorcyclists.
All national forests are mapping out trails and roads where dirt bikes will be allowed. This is part of a federal effort to better (?) manage traffic in national forests. Here in New Mexico, Travel Management Plan Workshops are being held all over the state. In Santa Fe it’s on March 27, 6:30-8:30 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation. In Albuquerque, it’s at the UNM Continuing Ed Center on May 1st, 6-8 pm. For more info on the New Mexico plans, meetings and to submit comments go to www.fs.fed.us/r3/sfe/ for the Santa Fe National Forest or www.fs.fed.us/r3/carson/recreation/travel_mgmt/ind ex for the Carson National Forest.
For those of you in other states or for more info, go to http://www.fs.fed.us/recreation/programs/ohv/index .shtml

As for the MT-60's, they worked very nicely- the off-road performance was the best so far- they saved my bacon several times. Part of the road descended 5000 feet in 45 miles- sheer rock wall on the inside, 15 foot wide gravel/dirt road with no guard rails, 600 foot drop on the other side- high pucker factor. I embarrassed several BMW and Suzuki riders with the Uly. I hit 106 through some paved twisty areas and they stuck like glue, although you will use the whole tire around to the sidewall marker if you get aggressive. The front tire still has plenty of tread after 2800 miles, the rear is shot. The tire is soft race compound with the cleats. According to Pirelli, 2500+ is great mileage for the rear. They also say the tire is a safety issue on that size wheel, so I suggested that they make a 180 with 1/4" deeper tread on the back. For now, I'm back to the scorpions.
I'll see you at the PDW on Saturday?

Nope, it was a great day for a ride. We met at Coffee at Dawn, Murrae picked up a couple more riders at the Coffee place. I rode with them until hwy 60 and then I went back the same way and everyone else went on. I had to give a lesson in SF so I couldn't be out all day. But, it was great. I'm sure that someone else will post about the rest of the ride.

Anyone need/want a discount track day ticket? I have one for the 7th and I'm going to have to work. So I can't go.

I thought the ride was for Saturday not Sunday. Sunday was perfect weather for riding in. Glad it did clear up and hope you all had a great time.

Does anyone have a friend or know a good shop that does painting of small parts? I want to get some pieces paint matched on the bike and I'm not sure where to take them.

JJ, did you ever check out the Uly?

Ride was nice. Kim bailed early and the rest of us went on to Mountainair for a nice lunch. Returned by the same route. No rain and only mildly cool in the morning. By 1030 or so when we left Cedar Crest, it was warming up nicely. Met a guy from Los Lunas who just picked up a '98 S3.

I'm actually looking forward to the upcoming rides because I prefer to ride north on those roads rather than south where there is too much flat and not enough curve.

For those of you interested in the oil test, I have some more good news. I had to ride up to SFHD for my BAS recall last Friday. I purposely took southern to 528 to 550 to 25. I figured that would give me the most stop and go traffic followed by a good highway flogging. I ran it hard stoplight to stoplight and ran the whole way to Santa Fe between 80 and 100. The fan came on sometime on the highway, but that is to be expected on a Buell. When I exited at Cerillos and started slowing down I noticed the fan had come on. By the time I got to the light before Airport RD it had turned off all ready. When I got to the dealer and shut it off, it did not kick on. They did their thing and had me out of there in about 35 minutes so I jumped right back on it and flogged it home. Exited at 550 and it was on again (expected). Traffic was backed up all the way to 528 and it stayed on until I turned on 528 and got out of it. By the time I stopped at Idalia to turn it was off again. When I got home and shut it off, it kicked on high and immediately went to low and shut off quick. Maybe ran 30 seconds. Put my Drummer on Saturday and took it out for a good flogging again. Never kicked on until I got back home and shut it off. It has not turned on again this whole week (Sat night-Wed morn) at all and I've been beating on it enjoying the exhaust. So far, it is turning out better than I even expected. For those interested in the Drummer, it is the deepest sounding exhaust I have ever heard on any bike. It is a bit loud, but you get used to it quick and it sounds good because it has to crack or rasp at all. The powerband starts at 1500 RPM and goes till Redline. The front wheel is unexpectedly lighter as well. Having trouble keeping it on the ground under acceleration now.

So what time are we meeting for Sunday's ride?

Funny you should ask because I was just thinking about that.

Apparently, we did not factor in the Easter holiday when we planned this calendar, even though I'm sure we tried to avoid all such conflicts. Nevertheless, I will be out for a ride.

I thought since it was a holiday, and a short ride, we could leave later, like 1030ish? We're only going thru LA to Jemez, so that won't take long. Even with a lunch stop at Los Ojos or the Laughing Lizard, it'll be a relatively short day.

I'll peel off at the bottom of 550, but others should be back to SF by about 1600 or so.

Whaddaya think?
