Jackie,
Thanks for the offer, but I got a deal on the same stuff from the bike owner. So, I'm all set there.

Nuts,
The guy said it has a new coil on it, but like you say, yours went at 200mi so I'll check it to be safe.

Thanks guys!

Jackie, almost forgot...

Think you could do me a favor and snap a good pic of where the license plate bracket is attached on your bike, and send it to tankmicou at cox dot net?? It would be most appreciated.

I know this one aint right. Looks like somebody modded it to work without blinkers, and hacked the "anti-pivot" part off.

Thanks Jackie! Awesome pics.
The owner(Steve) said it was like that when he got the bike. They hacked off more than I thought.

I went right for the coil like you suggested and guess what....

I happened to have another laying around and, while it didn't test "within spec", it was good enough to run the bike. Still need a new one.....and the engine light is still on.

Will try to hook it up to the VVDSTDSTPSTUFF tomorrow, clear all codes and start over

Jackie,
It's hell to be a perfectionist.LOL You have two choices, 1 Run the bike on the stand till your sure it's not going to come off or 2 Say the hell with it, jump on and tear out down the road and see what happens. Your gonna wind-up doing 2 before it's over.
My 03 has a different belt than yours, but an open end sprocket still the same(org. belt) and when I changed rear sprockets, It did what yours is doing, after fretting with it, I finally just road it and it settled down.If I back it up, it will still pull in on the rear and rub to where you can feel it. That's been many thousands of miles ago that I switched sprockets. Do #1 till you are comfortable with it and then let her rip.....Charlie

If it were mine, I'd go for option #2 and let her rip!

p.s. goin' to drag the computer back down to the basement. Last night I had trouble with the VDSTS not staying connected, and having to re-start the software every time I tried to do something different???? Also, some of the components in the program would not connect at all. Changed some settings, and I think I updated the software. We'll see what happens.

Charlie.
I appreciate it! I value and trust your opinions and suggestions above most others so if you say it happenend to yours then I have to believe it will be o.k..
I am going to do the slow ride up and down the street this evening to see what happens and then perhaps take it out for a longer slow ride around the Mt Pleasant area.
I'll let you know what happens.
Many thanks again and if you ever get back up this way I'll buy you a tall, frosty root beer for the help

Charlie,
I live right off of 116 so that's pretty much my backyard.
I made a few passes on my road and ventured up to the gas station to fill up with fresh petrol. I then got a little bolder and made a loop around Riverland back to the house.
Checked the belt and it hadn't move one way or the other so I decided to hit Windy Gap. The bike performed very well indeed with the tires that came with the rims (can't remember what brand they are). Fell into the corners with ease and felt like they were glued to the road.
Overall my mind is much more at ease but still wish it was "perfect".

I have great respect for your picture taking ability, and I also understand perfection.

Send me a pic of your GAP!

My project is like night and day compared to my SL. The SL is "perfect" for me in so many ways, and the project is sooo wrong in more ways than I can count. I may send a p.m. about it just to vent.

I checked the gap on both bikes and they are the same...about a heavy 1/16. It could look like 1/8" if you look too close. The belt is straight cut, while the pulley is beveled. making the gap natural.

NUTS will be incommunicado for the next few days. I'll be riding the Uly down to Suches, GA for March Badness IV. The lone "Roanoke Valley Fast&Loose" representative. My goal for this ride is to keep the bike from being on its side. I'd like to avoid that whole Pinging thing too! NUTS

I also have a confession to make...

Before today, I had not the experience of riding a bike with "fixed" instruments or fairings. It totally weirded me out at one point, while narrowly passing Dads truck, and I almost crashed away.

Long live DIRT! At the point of disorientation, I straightened the bars and goosed it a little, and payed attention to where I might end up, and ended up where I wanted to be.

Almost took the "project" for a longer spin today. I've taken it up the street and back, but this time I had my jacket, gloves, helmet, and reeboks on. I was serious.

I got on and something just wasn't right. I took a quick reality check and realized that the thing didn't have any mirrors on it. So I threw a mirror on the bare fairing mount, and got back on.

One last check...
No brake light with the rear brake, and the front don't work too hot. AND, I don't have any ID on me, plus I havent been to DMV yet, and it has no inspection sticker.

I shut her down and put her back in the garage like the law abiding citizen that I should be.

It just wasn't meant to be today.

Tank(needs to grow a pair, and get to DMV)

Charlie,
She is a mean looking bumble bee huh?
That bike of his seems to have a mind of its own. I'm scared if I got him a kickstand pad the bike would just flop over on the other side .
I completely agree with you on his mechanical woes. I am pleased that Buell and the shop took care of him but I wonder if they solved the root of the initial problem. I guess when we get the ride report from his March Badness excursion we will see.

Tank,
Don't let all the little problems get you down man. Just think it probably isn't anything too serious and it will keep you occupied for a while. Makes the final result feel more rewarding when all is said and done.
Your story about almost hitting your Pops truck reminds me of my first Firebolt ride. I came from the world of customs and choppers with LONG front ends so when I took off down the road on the Bolt' it was quite scary. Took me a few days of careful riding to finally figure it out. Two years later I am still as slow as a sleeping turtle.

I am taking the Honda out for its' first official off road trip this afternoon. Nothing major until I get a skidplate but plan on hitting every gravel road and fire trail in the vicinity.
Ya'll have a fine weekend!

Naaa, not really down, as I enjoy wrenching and tinkering on stuff. But with the acquisition of the bike, I don't have the necessary fundage to procure needed parts. That's why I'm frustrated right now, but it shouldn't take long until my tax refund check clears. And then it's off to the "Andy I need it now" thread, and/or Ebay.

Right now I'm considering a mass wheel swap between the two bikes so I can work on the one with the bad rotor. But I need a new rotor and pads so I can swap everything at once.(actually, maybe I don't....wheels are turning...)(no pun intended)

Good luck with your new ride! Enjoy

This just in. Put 129 miles on the Honda doing everything from highway to rutted out hardpack with plenty of gravel mixed in. The bike performed flawlessly however I did run out of gas on top of a deserted gravel mountain pass (thank the Lord for reserve ).
I even took it on RT220 and ran her up to 80MPH. The knobbies make for a bit of a rough ride but certainly tolerable.
All I can say is THIS THING IS A FREAKIN' BLAST!! There are a few things I have to get used to again though.
#1. I have to get used to all the noise that a chain makes when bouncing around on the rough trails.
#2. The gearing is nowhere near as functional as the Buell. Lots of shifting going up hill so as to not lug the motor or over rev.
#3. Since the bike sits so high I have to learn the lean angles all over again.

I did end up getting caught in a thunderstorm and got soaking wet so I have gotta come up with a better riding outfit. I will say that even though it sucked getting wet it was nice not worrying about keeping this bike clean or dry. Matter of fact I made a point of hitting one of the dirt passes one more time just so I could sling some mud .
Pictures will be coming around the end of next week after I replace the ratty looking front fender.

Come on dude...

You know we aint gonna' believe that you got a motorcycle dirty unless you post some hard evidence.

Waiting until you change a fender, and clean her up aint gonna' do it.

Glad you had a good ride!(you know I was joking, right??)

More on my saga....
I had a brilliant idea.(have to put them to use because they don't happen that often)

I happen to have a complete extra set of wheels with tires/rotors/pulley ready to go. My plan was to put the set with the Syncs back on the S, and put the set currently on the S on the R(mmm Corsas). This way I can fix the warped rotor, and still have two functional bikes.

With me so far? Great plan, right?

Some background....
I have a large eye bolt mounted into a steel I-beam in the ceiling in the garage. I use a "come-along" with a strap around the top triple to lift the bike enough to slide my home-job cradle under the muffler. Works great!....

Last time I did this, I had to run to Lowes and buy a come-along because Pops had his at the cabin. No problem.

Jump to today...
For some reason, I STILL DON'T HAVE A FREAKIN COME-ALONG........DAMMIT.

So the wheel swap is postponed.

On a better note, I found a small problem with the bike that could possibly have caused all the gremlins so far....
.

.

.

.

.

Still with me....

.

.

.

.

wait for it....

.

.

.

.

Blown Fuse ,
for the cooling fan.

My theory: blown fuse = over heat = skip spark mode = blown coil(may have already been weak?) = Tank gets great deal

Still need to test the fan circuit for shorts(cause it should be wearing pants ) but the engine light is no longer on!

Now didn't I specifically tell you to not overlook the simple things . And all this time I bet you were pouting about needing a whole new fan LOL!
Shame you ain't closer or you could borrow the Pitbulls. Hopefully I won't be using them again for many thousands of miles.
If you don't slow it down you are going to have it all fixed up and then you will be wishing you had extended the project.

Keep at it my friend and plod slowly along. Patience is a virtue (which I, incidently don't have ).

By the way, good storytelling. Built up the suspense as I slowly scrolled down the page.

Yes, you did mention simple things. It came down to using a jumper on the diagnostic plug, and letting the bike tell me what was wrong. The software had a "pop-up" that said engine trouble, but there was no code on the software. Weird stuff.

I'm using the 3.0 Beta version, so maybe I should shoot them a note that code 36 does not appear on the list???

I have a grocery bag of new parts that I plan to throw at her tomorrow, unless I find the existing part within my own tight specs.

I love this stuff. She's like a beast that needs taming enough so I won't be afraid to approach.(which aint very tame)

charlie,

Jason's uly problems are fixed. I have 15,000 miles on mine (factory stock), and not any problems with pinging. after seeing the misaligned rings on the inside of jason's motor, it is obvious what was causing the pinging. I think his problems are fixed

Seth,
I can't see misaligned rings causing the pinging. But I think this says alot for RVHD(good)in the way they got in there and repaired his motor. I just hope they got the timing where it needs to be for HIS motor and solve what I think is the root problem.IMO
Again I wish all Buell dealers where as user friendly as RVHD& Buell......Charlie

I can see misaligned rings causing leakdown or blow by but how would that affect pinging or pre detonation?
After reading through Badweb it seems that the Uly is somewhat of a hit or miss type of proposition. Some have no problems while others do. No reflection on the dealer just the way it seems to be.
As Charlie said, big props to RVHD and Buell for trying to address ALL the issues and not just put a band aid on it.

Seth,
We have got to hit Wildlife Rd. in short order so I can really try the Honda out. I am leary of going by myself the first time and Jason is out of town so might you have some free time during the upcoming week?

Lucky for you! With the acquisition of the duel sport I can now go on the official "Jims ride from hell" adventure next time .
From what Ole' Nuts said it was a blast and made me quite envious of you guys. So much so that I parted with some of my hunting gear to get the money for the foreign thumper. Now I just need some more appropriate gear which bring me to....

Nuts,
Do you think Pops is interested in parting with the "slightly blemished" adventure type jacket that you so gracefully bailed in? Seeing as how I helped one of his boys get a big ole' Gobbler last year and will be helping one of his other boys this year maybe he will take pity on me .
