SHAWEEET!
In that particular scenario I would have to say screw the riding, at least for several hours.

That is a pretty neat little site. I think I'll have to ad that to my favorite list.

Hey Jackie,
Don't let alittle heat on your leg slow you down, that's what they made heat wrap for. That stuff works great, you could ride barefooted.LOL
I even used some to wrap my silencer core. That stuff doesn't blow out like the packing does.............Charlie

Charlie,
I have a bit of a problem with direct heat. It gives me some wickedly nasty hives and causes the histamine in my body to rise to the point of possible anaphylactic shock. Thats why me and stinky Nuts have to wait until late afternoon to go riding or fishing in the Summer. Also a major reason why I bought the Buell instead of another custom build. As you know the pipes on the XB are kept away from the body.
Does the heat wrap work really well at reducing temps? In you opinion, combined with boots do you think it would be a huge difference?
Your input is much appreciated as I am wanting to avoid a costly (both medically and financially) error in judgement.

Jackie,
In all seriousness, that stuff works great.
I use the one inch wrap and overlap it at a 1/4 inch(that leaves 3/4 covered) and it works great. I have had the ceramic coated pipes(look great) but don't reduce the heat like the wrap does. The closer you overlap, the more heat reduction you get. That's my story and I'm sticking to it......Charlie

Jackie,

Heat wrap works.
The fact that I have not melted anything in the engine bay of the Miata is due testament. I wrapped the turbo with some aluminium covered, non-aspestos(sp) wire-tied stuff; and the downpipe is wrapped in the "stuff" without aluminium covering, and nothing melts.

Different application, but the containment of the heat is simply amazing. I should have melted something, wiring, master cylinder,....something. It keeps the floorboard cooler too. Good stuff.(I used the DEI brand on the car)

I may use it on a new project too, if it happens. Details to follow.

Not sure it would live up to your pristine "looks" standard though.

Tank,
I know the project but my lips are sealed!
You are a lucky man indeed !

Charlie,
Looks like your two Roanoke students are feverishly dueling to see who comes up with a duel sport first.
I want a Honda XR650L but may be going with the Suzuki DR650Z. Got a line on a Honda that has 12,000 miles on it for a very attractive price. The mileage scares me a bit but if the motor is the same as the early 90s' model then an overhaul is easily done by the Fast and Loose mechanics in our high tech bike headquarters (actually Nuts' basement).

Nuts,
Do me a righteous favor man. When you pick the Uly up tomorrow grab me 3 quarts full synthetic motor oil, the little O ring for the drainplug and an oil filter.
I'll pick the stuff up when I get the girls from school on Tuesday and give you the funds on the spot.

Jackie,

If you are considering a DR650, there is a 2001 with 3000 miles in Roanoke for an amazingly low price of $2500. I was on my way to buy it last night. Unfortunately the friend of mine that I was floating the loan to canceled the transaction. So the bike is still available.

Danger is my business and business is good .
I see some 20ft jumps in my future possibly followed in short order by paraplegia and closed head injuries (just kidding Charlie, don't worry).
Seriously I am getting frustrated and confused about trying to find (and afford) the right bike.
If the dude gets in touch with you get some directions. I wanna go see this thing in person to see if it meets my criteria.

Dang, it's quiet in here.
(insert crickets chirping)

Looks like I'm definitely going to need that heat wrap and insulating tape. Let the (internet) games begin!

p.s. the insulation I used on the car is Thermo-tec, not DEI.

Tank,
Pulled into the driveway at 9:54 last night with my new project.
2004 Honda XR650L. A bit on the dirty side and plenty of scratches and dings but the engine looks clean, runs and shifts smooth, no fluid leaks and pulls like a freaking horse.
How is your project acquisition coming along?

Nuts,
The tires are Dunlop D606 front and rear. Pretty much new with the nubs still on them and best of all DOT APPROVED. Now I can spend that wad on replacement plastics. I don't mind scratches but the dude PAINTED the fender and right number plate. I'd rather have em' fresh or battle scarred and not the rattle can treatment.
Lowered the price on the Lightforce so expect the plastic to look fresh as a daisy in short order .

Jackie, that's awesome!
Years ago, I could have found a place to put a bike like that to good use. But now there isn't anyplace to go without the worry of getting arrested or shot.

How is your project acquisition coming along?
I'm leaving with trailer in tow about 10:30am, and should easily be back by 4pm.
Beautiful day for a drive!

Well...
I didn't make it back by 4, but I did make it back with a loaded trailer. Steve is a super nice guy, and really didn't want to sell, but he has his reasons.

She's a little rough around the edges, and she's only hittn' one jug, but for having 25k miles, it's really in pretty good shape! I highly suspect that it has the ORIGINAL 03' DRIVE BELT!!!?

I'll try to get a couple pics before I start "digging".

There's a hole that the exaust rubbed through.

And another that the front tire rubbed through.

All in all, a buelltiful day!

Tank,
I would be listening for sirens if I were you because you freakin' stole that thing dude !
No big deal on the fairing issues. Find a local shop who has some experience with Corvettes and you will never know they were there.
Are you gonna dive right in or make it your Winter project?

Not too worried about looks at this point, but I can fix the glass myself. It's hard to tell from the pics, but I believe it just has the white "primer" on it from the factory. It doesn't look like paint, pretty dull.

As for the mechanical stuff, I'm going to fix it up as fast as the bank account allows, but I don't think there is anything wrong internally. It starts o.k. on one jug and it makes less top end noise than my SL ever has. It seems to have compression on the non-firing cylinder because the other one works like a dog to overcome the pressure. I'm thinking along the lines of a bad plug/wire, bad/clogged injector, or a grounded wire somewhere in either circuit.

Time to test my gremlin stalking abilities.

Gotta' go, I think I hear those sirens!

If you wanna borrow my software let me know. You can check the injectors, reset the TPS and look at a couple other things while you are at it.
May be a step in the right direction.

Tank, Congrats. I'll wager you've got a bad coil or coil wire loose. My 04 Lightning blew a coil at 200 miles and it ran on one jug for about a block. NUTS
