Ok... I have been doing some computer geeking with street atlas and come up with the following for POSSIBLE ride routes for the Dragon trip....

1) *Best Roads (also depends on the condition of the Skyway)*; Suches- Skyway- Dragon- Madisonville- Tellico Plains- Suches.
EST TIME; 7-9 hours.
ROADS; Hwy 60 to Hwy 68 to Skyway to US 129 (dragon) to Hwy 72 to US 411 to Hwy 68 to Hwy 60.
FUEL/ CATCH UP STOPS; Morganton, Ga- Copper Hill, Tn- Tellico Plains, Tn- On Skyway- Robbinsville, NC- On Dragon- Madisonville, Tn- Tellico Plains, TN- Copper Hill, Tn- Morganton, Ga.

FUEL PLANNING; Suches to Tellico Plains is 75 miles. Tellico to Robbinsville is 50 miles. Robbinsville- Tellico (via Madisonville) is 72 miles.

2) *2nd Choice*; Suches- Tellico Plains- Madisonville- Dragon- Suches.
EST TIME; 8-10 hrs.
ROADS Hwy 60 to Hwy 68 to US 411 to Hwy 72 to US 129 (dragon) to hwy 60.
FUEL/ CATCH UP STOPS; Morganton, Ga- Copper Hill, Tn- Tellico Plains, Tn- Madisonville, Tn- On Dragon- Robbinsville, NC- Murphy, NC- Morganton, Ga.

FUEL PLANNING; Suches to Tellico is roughly 75 miles. Tellico to Robbinsville is 50 miles. Robbinsville to Tellico (via Madisonville) is 72 miles.

3) *Mostly boring and crowded*; Suches- Dragon- Suches.
EST TIME; 5-7 hrs.
ROADS; Hwy 60 to 129 (Dragon) and back.
FUEL/ CATCH UP STOPS; Morganton, Ga- Murphy, NC- Robbinsville, NC- On Dragon- Robbinsville, Murphy- Morganton.

FUEL PLANNING; Suches to Robbinsville is 83 miles. Dragon to Suches is 110 miles.

Times are dependant on how long we stop and assuming we make all stops. Stops are FLEXIBLE depending upon the circumstances. I plan to ride a moderate pace, not too fast and not too slow.

I have found fuel mileage for an S1W is around 150 miles to a tank (160 max) before reserve. An S1 is around 100 miles to a tank (110) before reserve. Not sure on the XBs or any other bikes.

Please FEEL FREE to add your input/ suggestions!!!!! This should be a FUN, THUNDEROUS RIDE!!!!

M2nc, I was wanting to swap as soon as I had bought the bike, when people were saying "you can't do that." Then in true BadWeB form, someone did it. I had been trying forever to catch someone before they did it {R to S) to try and swap even, Wolf just happened along at just the right time, and he was in the neighborhood on business, so it worked out well. Another reason was for the extra leg room, taller seat, with the S pegs. MrsG also feels more confident which is also a big plus.

While y'all are looking at Paint's routes, keep in mind Tellico Plains is somewhere not to be missed if you can help it. Great riding up that way.

Paint, are those times including several dragon runs?
My XB usually hits the reserve at about 110 miles.

Glitch, how do you like those Michelin Pilots? Seems thay have a good price on them at cycle gear. I was thinking about trying them out if they work well.

7 days and a wake up.... WOOT!

Really nice so far.
I'll let you know how I like 'em for mountain runs after the Pre-Badness weekend.

At this point, attending MB this year would be the most irresponsible thing I could possibly do.

I am so there. I might have to find a job and a place to live when it's over, though.

Who wants a cat?

I like the Pilot Roads. Good for the kind of riding I do and I've never over ridden them. Don't know if that says more about my riding or the tires? They last a whole lot longer too.

"Sun nite... There is a little basement bar in Dalonaga that serves some good food and has Karaoke... Attend at your own risk!!"

That was a great night! Good steaks, cold beer, great stories, lot's of bench racing, a few embellishments and some outright lies (on my part), and even a few pretty faces to admire. I'm looking forward to doing it all again.

Anyone that wants to join us Sunday night for the Invasion of Dahlonega, please do. The only risk is the karaoke...

Ride 1 and 2 are based on 1 full length run of the Dragon. Ride 3 is based riding to the overlook and then back down the Dragon. If we do ride 1 or 2, we should be spending roughly ONE HOUR just to get across the Cherohala Skyway!! That's one hour of twisties with few cars!!

The times are based on staying within 10 MPH of the speed limit (at least in the straights). Not sure on how many riders we have headed up to the Dragon on Fri. Obviously the more riders that go, the more strung out we are LIKELY to be. Keep in mind we are also planning to hook up with another Buell Group at the Dragon.

Last Sept I rode from Suches up Hwy 60 to Hwy 68 To Tellico Plains, across the Cherohala, up to the overlook on the dragon and back down 129 to Hwy 60. The ride from Suches to Tellico was OUTSTANDING! The Skwyway was awesome! The Dragon was, well, the Dragon. US 129 from Robbinsville to Suches was boring with lots of traffic. The ride took all day, but we did loli-gag on some of the stops...

Regardless of which route we take or how long it takes us, you will be tired boys and girls!! LOL

Paint,
I gotcha.. I didn't think it was that far, but I guess with the route, you really wouldnt need may trips back and forth on the dragon to get your twisty fix in. It would already be made by the time you got there.

Glitch, Odie, Kdan,
Thank for the input on the Pilots, I may just get me one'dem for my next tar.
How is their profile when compared to the Diablo? I have a diablo front that still has a lot of life left in it (I'm not very hard on my front tire). I still have some left on the rear, but it is starting to cup and show some center line wear from commuting.

Oh, and: 7 days 18 hours 20 minutes 50 seconds to lift off.

Question........ How long does it take to go from beginning to the end of the Dragon????

Not for nothing but I wouldn't mind doing a couple of runs on the Dragon. I(and others)am coming from ~1100 miles away and it seems like a waste to do it only once.

But I'll do what the group wants. I don't want to be a party pooper. Or any kind of pooper for that matter!!!!!

Don't let your party get pooped on either!! It will take you about 20 to 25 min. one way if you do the whole thing. But you will want to stop at the look out for some pics and the Deals Gap store.

I'll be there Friday at about 10:00 am coming from the North to meet up with you-all coming from the South. And I won't be alone!

I'm guessing that the Dragon will be beat by Buellers for a couple of hours on multiple runs. It takes about 20+ minutes at a fair clip.

I recommend doing the corners as fast as you feel comfortable then slow down to near the posted limits on the straights, we may have company, and anyone can go fast on the straights, but not everyone can keep their license.

Truer words have never been spoken.

Ratyson, I wouldn't mix tires, but that's just me. And the tire manufacturer.

Also, if you are not ready for it... the dragon WILL bite.
The first run through should be at a slow pace just to make sure everyting is clear.
There have been times when debris/oil has been depositied on the road at the entrance to or exit from a turn. Sometimes by mistake, sometimes not by mistake.

Also, if you are on the dragon, and you see something odd on the side of the road... say like a few long sticks set up like a triangle.. or just something out of the natural order, take that as a warning that something is not right up ahead.
The killboy dot com guys do a great job of keeping the road clear.. but if there is something that they cannot clean up, they will use whatever they can find on the side of the road to put out a 'warning' of sorts.

It is a fun road though. But once the traffic picks up, it more of a pain than fun.

I used to run the dragon from the dam to the store in just under 15 minutes. But that was in my old race car... Smoking tires through every corner and getting up to 90 mph in some straights.
Ahhhh good times.

I plan on going quite a bit slower on the bike tho. I am required to come home in one piece.

My goad for the weekend is to learn smooth lines for extreme cornering. I know my bike is fast in a straight line. I can practice that here in Ohio!
I can't wait to get some action shots from Killboy and some good video.

Weeeeeeeeee
