Perhaps I'm the lone soul who was treated well at Chick's. This was before the T-Bird days. I got to know a couple of folks there (including Chick...great guy) and maybe that made the difference.

Last time I was at T-B I talked to one of the parts guys for a while...sounded like he wished for the "good old days".

Before the "sellout" Chick introduced me to John Greene (one of the new owners) and touted him as very pro-Buell. Hmm.

The rest of you guys probably know a lot more about all this than I do, since I'm a relatively new Buell owner.

Since I travel a bit...I've noticed a trend of HD dealers who don't seem to care about Buell and don't make any special effort to market the bikes/stuff. I did not intend to trash just T-Bird...but it's so easy. T-Bird is a HD dealer - they should just drop the Buell line entirely.

I've been told the margin on Buells is very small and doesn't bring in the profits like HDs. So why not try and work it with volume? Maybe not worth a dealer's effort...?

Service at Chicks/T-Bird? I have had to get management involved on several issues with Buell and HD bikes. Recently I had a breather/oil-separator problem on my VRSCR and I had to get T-Bird management involved again. It's like pulling teeth. I wonder why auto dealers just seem to fix it when under warranty and HD seems to try and find reasons NOT to fix something (under warranty). I've noticed I get better service when I'm paying...

Anyway, hope Buell finds a way to get some of its dealers more energized.

Tore up some roads yesterday and today...

BTW: Check out the video at link...you have to go "overseas" to find downloadable links...give it some time to download/play.

Any one know Dave Drucker? He owns a 2005 CityX and lives in Abq. I just bought his exhaust from Ebay to do a Drummer and didn't realize he was here in town until he emailed me wanting to know if I wanted to pick it up in person. I told him about this site in case he didn't know about it.

Hum, maybe that is the CityX I saw a few weeks ago on Tramway. I thought it was Bart.

I still have the Buell race exhaust (&ECM) off my CityX if you find anyone else who is wanting one.

So JM you ready for your student teaching? I'll be stopping by on Sunday to see how you are holding up. Hopefully you'll have a less exciting class then we did.

cheers

I heard about your class today. I'm glad I couldn't teach last weekend. Our class is doing real well. A couple of weak students, but they are coming along. Tomorrow is always a different story. We did the majority of our teaching today. I taught 4 including EX1 and Kari 3. We both have two tomorrow. Man was it cold out there this morning. About 23 degrees before the wind chill. You should post your race parts in the classifieds. Someone will snatch them up quick.

Sounds like you had a stronger class then we did. Ours made me wanna go home to drink heavily and I actually considered not going back the next day. You two ended up teaching more then we did. I only had to do 4 total and only two of those as C1. I stopped by there in the afternoon. If I would've read your post before today I would have figured out that you were teaching in the morning....

Instead I went straight to the track to watch for awhile. I saw two guys from the advanced group go down. Pretty cool to watch the good ones rip around. I'm thinking that I need to do the next one.

I'll try the classifieds here again, last time no one was interested.

Hey, All,
What's the "club" Buellnick mentioned above? I had to drive to Santa Fe this morning to get a brake lever which (HOORAY!) they had in stock. The shop, I noticed had a great selection of Buell gear and actual parts in stock - I thought I'd gone to the Big Buell shop in the sky. And the hour drive is really nice, though I found it strange to be doing 90 on the way back to ABQ and getting passed like crazy - You guys up north must be in a hurry to get to the airport is all I can figure... T-Bird isn't going to sell a stinkin' t-shirt if they only have 3 (1 small, 1 2X, and 1 3X) I'm glad I'm not the only one underwhelmed by their show, and I'm all about keeping the $ local if I can - just give me a reason... even a small one. I spoke with one of the T-bird parts guys about this site (he just bought a new Bolt) Maybe he'll print some of these "reviews" for the boss...

You guyz are A+, Thanks for taking care of me B4 your open hour. I'll definitely be calling for parts, and stopping by for more Buell paraphenalia(sp?) when I just can't see myself driving into work before a 100mi detour... Do you have the Buell hats, not the free beanies, the baseball style?

Well, our club is Zia Thunder. Been around for about two or three years now. We have a website: http://www.santafeziathunder.com/ but it's not quite done.

We set our ride calendar for 2007 here:
http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show .cgi?tpc=37&post=818005#POST818005

We have a lot of riders that live in the Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, and Santa Fe areas and most of our rides go up north only because that's where the funnest roads are.

You are more than welcome to come out with us anytime. The first ride is coming up in two weeks, so come out and meet everyone. Many of them post on this site and some just lurk.

Cheers!

I had a chance to do the Mountainair loop this past week and it wasn't quite what I expected. Ran out of curves way too soon going down 337 and the Uly isn't designed for top speed testing out on 60 and 47. Hit the rev limiter in 5th several times. I think I'll avoid that route from now on. Has anyone decided anything more about the Silver City weekend as far as daily rides or events?

Well, Mountainair is definitely the least curvy run we have ever done. We really include it because south instead of north and early or late in the season, going north isn't always a good idea. There is usually too much crap in the road left over from the snow season.

In the past, I've actually just gone to Mountainair with one or two others (Luis and Pablo usually) and stopped in Mountainair for lunch and return by the same route.

There are good curves at the beginning of the run when you are just south of Tijeras and then some straights. Then in the middle there are a lot of straights with some more high-speed stuff, then it's just straight into Mountainair. The bits on US60 aren't bad headed toward NM47, but after that it's pretty sedate. Of course, coming up 47, you pass through Belen and Los Lunas and stuff and it's like a farm road and relatively congested.

On the Silver City run, I haven't talked to anyone else about it in any detail. There is an interesting loop on the map heading north out of Silver City on 15/35, but I've never ridden it. I think several of us thought we might ride over toward AZ on 78 like we did for the Torque-fest. Other than that, I think it's pretty open if you have suggestions.

The Silver City, NM area has the Pinos Altos - Mimbres Valley loop. There was a national Buell event there back a few years (Chick's HD hosted). I could not go but I subsequently went up there on my Triumph and stayed at a lodge where Rt 152 meets Rt 15(Forgot the name but it was overun with humming birds).

The ride getting there was Interstate 25 to Rt 152 to 61 to 35 and then to Rt 15. The I-25 part all the way to Kingston was the boring part (as you can imagine).

After Kingston it was all winding roads through the Black Mountain area and then into the Mimbres river valley all the way to Rt 15. When I went, these roads were new or very well maintained but there was some gravel and even fallen rock on the road. You are in a canyon for part of the ride through the Black Mountain area. The Mimbres valley can be fun at a brisk pace due to the winding roads going through tree lined roads - you feel like you're in a tunnel at times.

When you get to Rt 15 and if you choose to go south, you are immediately confronted with ascending right and left SHARP blind turns in a road that can barely fit two vehicles. Assuming you survive this, you will be repeatedly confronted with multiple sharp turns, switch backs, and visible but very bumpy s-turns. Actually got my front airborne as I trie to cut the S on one of them. You get a break as you ride the plataeu or you can choose to bump up the speed through tree lined road (again - the tunnel effect) and then you have some more tight twisties to deal with before you descend into Silver City. I did Rt 15 twice in both directions - just for the fun of it and to learn it better...a variety of turns and elevation changes. Pinos Altos is an old mining town with character when things are open. Old West theater, Saloon, Steak House...

Rt 15 North from 35 is very scenic with well maintained sweepers all the way to the Gila Cliffs Dwellings.

The area is a great ride. You just have to put up with getting there... A recommended ride but it's definitely an overnight.

Momentarily cuts out fuel or spark or whatever the hell it is programmed for. It's enough to slow you down a little and take another run at it. Can't tell you exact speed. Last time I looked I saw the plus side of 120. Hard to stay tucked in too. Above 100, there is a serious upward pressure coming off the frame and airbox cover. Not sure if the other XB bikes are like this or just the Uly because of height.

I've only been to Silver City once to buy my 4 wheeler and I took my truck and trailer through the Black Mountains to get there. I can see that as being awesome on a bike. It sure sucked in the truck. I'm going to try to plan on doing the silver city weekend since it is one of the few options I have.

Do the other XB's have the heat and constant fan running issues of the Uly? I'm running an experiment with oil right now and would like another person to try something if interested. Someone who really racks up the miles would be great (Dr. Greg ), but anyone with an XB12 would do. Drop me a pm if interested.

My Firebolt is well behaved in the wind, at speed. Different fairing and lower to the ground. Hey I thought you were supposed to be tearing up dirt roads with that thing... ;)

As for cooling and fans running... Not sure if Ulys have a different heat sensor than other XBs. Is the sensor ok? Maybe it's coming on too soon...

Air Fuel ratio? Maybe ur running lean?

BTW: I switched to AMSOIL about 17000 miles ago and never looked back. The fan seemed to come on less... but I didn't do any kind of scientific test. AMSOIL and other good synthetics dissipate heat better than ordinary oils. Since I follow the 5000mi oil change interval and I am routinely on the rev limiter, I wanted good oil in there for the long haul. I use AMSOIL racing oil (20w50) in the crank case and the AMSOIL motorcycle stuff for the transmission. Mobil One and others (including the SE stuff) are far better than ordinary oils. I prefer AMSOIL because they came out on top (with Mobil One - second) on some tests I read about...

Just some thoughts...

The Silver City ride sounds like it would be a great one. I've never been there. I don't think that with this new job that I'll get to do any of the long weekend rides, I work on fridays and saturdays.

I just may do some some of those longer trips on the days that I'm off.

I went and did the mountainair loop yesterday, since I've never done that one. It wasn't bad , I kind've enjoyed the high speed section on 47. I wanted to try to find the upper limits on the Sprint. According to the trip computer my nerve stops at 130, but the bike still had lots more left. It really does handle nice at those speeds. I just started to worry about cops. Last thing, I wanna do is lose the new bike or my license.

JM, my cityX had loads of heat issues and few times I had to have them adjust the timing for the fan. It would come on and I swear it would never shut off. I had the Syn3 oil in it. It seemed better with that, but it still got really hot in the summer while in traffic, it would get uncomfortably hot. I'd some times get off it at lights, and I had the frame leave red marks on my legs from it getting so hot.

I've saw a lot of Buells out on Sunday I think that Luis was one of them I saw in Madrid on Sunday.

If the weather stays good you might have a lot of riders show up to that first ride.

Nick,
I just changed plugs this weekend (with 3400 miles on the bike) because of hard starting in the cold issues. I thought maybe I would see a lean condition, but the plugs were some of the best I have seen over the years. Nice golden tan dust around teh electrode. The rear plug did look like the ceramic was coming apart at the base. Anyhow, the bike is still starting better after plugs and Magnecor wires. As far as oil, I broke it in on HD dino at 50 and 500, then tried the HD SYN at 1000 and went to Amsoil MCV at 2000. All have been 20w-50 and the bike has ran hot with them all even it the cold winter riding. Uly's seem to be notorious for running hot though, but I think XB's are in general. That is why the right side scoop is such a hot topic also. I personally have thought the 20w-50 is just too heavy for the bike. It doesn't flow well enough to release heat and lubricate properly. After observing some great 15w-40 Rotella Dino UOA on the Uly, I decided to go my own route. I've had great results and seen even more with the Rotella 5w-40 Synthetic. It may be a hydrocracked group 3, but it consistently performs with the top Group 4's out there. I went ahead and put it in the Uly this weekend. So far the fan has come on twice in the last 4 days. No 20w-50 has ever done that for me. It used to be that my 5 mile trip to work would turn the fan on at about 4 miles and run until after I shut the bike off. It hasn't come on once yet traveling from work to home including when I shut the bike off. It has also been warmer outside since I changed oil. I'm generally an oil abuser because my vehicles never get warmed up enough in my short trips to work and home. I make a lot of short trips in the life of a vehicle and very few long ones. I live in a horribly dusty climate and live on a dirt road in that climate. I usually change oil do to time in use versus miles. Right now, this oil is performing far better for me than any 20w-50 ever has. I would like someone who thinks their fan runs a lot or the bike is excessively hot but rides longer distances and more miles than me to join in my experiment. I'm looking for someone who will get through a 5000 mile oil change rather quickly. I will buy the oil for the test over that one interval. I just need you to log some data for me such as how many miles or minutes until the fan came on before and after, how often it comes on before and after, any minor or major changes in the bikes driveability, etc...lots of mental awareness and notes required, but a round of free oil on me! Drop me a pm if interested so we don't clog up the list here with the always controversial oil discussions.

this oil issue is a good topic for this thread, don't be worried about that.
we go thru weeks with no posts, so anything is good. : )
I'd like to jump on your bandwagon and take a chance, but with my new job, I have very little time for riding and sometimes wonder if the pay justifies the lack of ride time.
I would normally accumulate 10,000 miles per bike, per year, and I think this would be good for your test. I tend to change my oil every 2000 miles. I still use 20W50 synthetic, and have had good results.
I was surprised this weekend when my fan came on after a spirited ride down hwy337 on sunday, but then again, it WAS a spirited ride, LOL.
But really, I haven't had any problems with my '05 city-x in 16,000 miles. Of course, I can't say the same for my tubers since they don't have a fan. But they certainly have been running real well, and seem to be happy.
If I was in town more often, and was able to ride more often, I would participate in this test and try to help you accumulate more data.
Perhaps others should bite the bullit, and take the test to see if this thinner oil can help our air/oil cooled engines run better.

"Because they are OOGLY!"

Not only are they the best looking Buell by far, they are also the most useful!! Why else would I own one? Motorcycles for me are a toss up between functionality and bang-for-the-buck. If I was rich I could see owning several bikes, but when only 1 is allowed it has to fit those two categories. Only 1 bike beats the Uly in those categories, but as the wife said, it was ugly and the Uly is hot.

Some young kid apparently crashed his yellow XB9R on Jemez Canyon Dam Road yesterday afternoon. Single vehicle accident attributed to speed. Apparently, he will live to speed another day. Anyone know who it was? Cause if he repairs it, he has to ride at least .25 miles away from me at all times!
