LOL,
I thought the subject topic was New Mexico, and riding? We were discussing riding. : )
To get back on topic...
Sunday, I may take a short ride down Hwy14 to the ponderosa for lunch. Temps should be back in the 50's by then.
Any other rides planned this weekend?

No, I love riding, plain and simple.
Which is what I'll be doing today.

Where is the Ponderosa on Hwy 14. I might go. I went to the PGR today, didn's see you, poke poke, I thought you might be going. I only rode as far as Paseo del Norte and came back home. Not too cold today, but work was way to busy to take off the rest of the day and I'm the only one that does what I do there. Not hard, just a small department. They promised me a helper for Jan 2007 and today they said they'd hire 2 for next year. yippie. But ya know, this TBH person sure has a lot of positions and moves around a lot. Work gets in the way of so many things.

I was there, saw you, if you were the guy on the black Uly.
I was on a black Honda V65, and was wearing black chaps and black leather jacket with a full face helmet. (one of the few with a helmet) Didn't think I should approach you since I'm such a trouble maker. ;)
The ride went well, definitly slow, but what do you expect with so many Harleys, LOL.
It was still a decent ride though, and the mission was accomplished.
I came back on Hwy 14 down through Madrid, and back into town through the canyon.

The Ponderosa is about 15 miles south of I-40 on Hwy 14. It is on the left hand side of the road. If you want to go together we can meet at Central and Tramway where rt66 heads east through the canyon. I'll be heading out around 10AM.

Bummer about the work situation, I know how it goes when your the only one that can complete the job. I almost didn't get my vacation this past summer because of that.
Luckily for me, they hired someone that was pretty good at the job, and that gave me enough slack to hit the road for two weeks.

That was me. I asked a few people if Bart was here and they didn't know. I asked Dar the guy on the Red honda 6cyl and he said no, but he said he's the other guy in the group with Buell. I'm trying to think which one. There were only a couple guys with heated gloves. I'm sorry I didn't recognize you. Hmmm. Paul, Vic, Bill, Norton, Dar. They were in the row across from me. Were you the one standing at the opposite end of my row at the church next to the church doors? Those are the only guys I didn't really talk to this time. hehe Go figure. Have you seen me the few other times? The police escort was annoying. Talk about rubber-banding, they fly fast then slow, fast, slow. ugggh.

I'll try to go Sunday. I was just informed we might have house things to do. On Google Maps, is that Highway 337?

Lol,
I'm sure I confuse everyone because so far I've been on 4 missions, and I've ridden a different bike each time.
First was the Taos mission, I was on the S1W, then the get together with a family in Rio Rancho, I was on the S2 that day, then the one the other night, I was on the city-X, and yesterday's mission, I was on the Honda.
I've got a Christmas Party to go to tonight, so I may be a little hung over in the morning, perhaps we can push the start time back to 1100hrs?
Yes, I think the road designation is 337, it changes again in Mountainaire to hwy 55.
The Ponderosa is between Miera, and Escabosa, I think.

Anyone else crazy to try this cold ride?

Also, looking at the map, are you turning around after eating or continuing south and doing a circle like 55 to 60 to 47 over to Belen then back north up though Los Lunas up on Broadway? The circle from Tijeras around and back to Tijeras looks like about 150 miles. But again, I don't have any warm gloves and it looks like 32 is the high in Mountainair tomorrow.

No, just down to the Ponderosa and back.
They've got decent food down there.
I've done the loop through Mountanair, it's not bad, but straight as an arrow from Mountainaire to Belen. (one curve, over a set of railroad tracks)
Round trip from Albq should be about 50 miles. I've got a spare set of gloves, I'll bring them.
We can meet at the corner of Tramway and Central. There is a gas station on the southwest corner.

Anyone else feel like a ride for lunch???

I'm down SW south of Isleta/Rio Bravo/I25. Meet at the gas station at 1000 or 1100 tomorrow? 1100 is closer to lunch and a little warmer.

Hey Rick,
Nice to meet you today, sorry for not waiting, I'll try to work on that.
It was 36 degrees at my apt when I left this morning, and 45 when I returned.
Have to admit, I was surprised the road was clear, no ice, and traffic was light.
All in all, a good day for a ride.
I was nice and toasty with the electrics, and my toes even stayed warm today. : )
I hope the gloves work out for you, at least until you can find something better.

Maybe next weekend it will get up into the high 40's and low 50's and we can check out some other roads.

Hello, it was nice to meet you too. I left 7 mins late and then the highway was completely stopped northbound right a the airport exit so I took the airport exit and went down Gibson and Central and showed up 11:37. I figured it would take 30 mins to get there. Then I waited until 11:57 and figured you didn't wait or you didn't make it back from your Christmas party. So, I did the trip on my own. I found it first try. It was really clear and sunny, but on the cold side. I saw snow as soon as I turned S on 337. I thought oh no. However, the road was clear and dry, oh yes. Nice scenery. That will be a much better ride when it warms up again. The gloves were better than that combo I was using. Still just a tad cold on the finger tips. I'm glad we didn't decide on the loop, my hands wouldn't have made it. Maybe I'll look for the electric glove kind.

Murrae,

I haven't even touched the bike since class. Since my whole family is coming to our house for Christmas this year, my wife has me finishing up all the projects we started after moving in last year. I've just been too busy to think about it. Poor thing is buried in the garage by boxes, sawdust and molding. I can say that I finished the hardwood floors, re-textured the whole house, painted the whole inside, hung all my wifes decor that she has been bothering me about forever, got all the curtains and shades up, and still managed to get all the Christmas shopping done by last weekend. With all the chaos going on right now, my mind hasn't been in the right place to get on the bike. I'll probably get with you after the Holidays about the starting issue if it is still persistent. I'm expecting some heated riding gear under the tree anyways. I have to call you soon about the teaching info too.

Happy Holidays everyone.

took my last ride for 'the season,' today, I thought i took that ride at the end of Oct. when it was cold as hell, so i put it away, then Nov. got really nice, go figure, too bad i was sick for most of it.

I'm keeping my x-1 in white rock in a garage of a guy i work with. When i took it there in Oct i didn't really winterize it, so i finally did so today, but since the stabilizer has to run through the engine a little i figured i should take a ride.

State route 4 was really nice, a little chilly but i was prepared. Did a 40 mile loop through los alamos and had a soccer mom nearly push me off the road. I don't know what part about my race exhaust she didn't hear as i was sitting right next to her...

Something about the ride struck me as odd though. Twice when down-shifting from 5th to 4th, it seemed to enter some weird state of neutral and i'd bounce off the rev limiter. The engine was warm at this point (at least i hope it was, what with the aluminum heads and all). After the second time it missed, I grabbed the clutch, then let it go, and i was back in 5th, i didn't touch the shift leaver at all.

Is this just a symptom of it being cold and/or having sat for 5 or 6 weeks? Could there be something terribly wrong?

Its an '01 lightning, 7,050 miles on it.

You might check the tension on the Primary chain. Could be out of spec just enough to cause strange shifting issues. When I checked mine for the first time at the 1k service, I found I had no slack at all. Explains why I had such a hard time getting into neutral and the 2-3 shift problems. It all went away after correcting the tension.

Just had a 1 week vacation at Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. It was about 80 and humid all week, but it was nice. It's nice here in ABQ today. The Uly started right up and I had a great hour of riding. (As opposed to taking like 4 long tries to come home when I took the ride with Bart a while ago when it was about 30 out up the hill at that restaurant) Only had 5 or so stop signs and 1 red light doing the down to Isleta, back up Coors to Rio Bravo and up to the Double Eagle Airport ride on the edge of town. I saw some guy in pickup with a dirt bike go offroad at the top of West Rio Bravo at that stop sign and he drove all along the power lines way out that way. I was thinking of following, but the gas light would probably come on after another couple miles. Also, I sometimes think there would be some nice pictures at some places along the ride, but then I think, why do I want to stop to take a picture. It's too much fun riding.

I'm not so sure about that. I've got over 6" snow on my street. Only like 8 cars have gone by, so my street is still fully packed. If I still had my RM125, I'd be out there. I almost had bought 4x4 ATV, but didn't think I'd ride it that much. Today would be fun.

CJ - Thanks for having us over, and congrats on the house.

After my late season ride and reconnecting with some of ya'll at CJ's sunday, my consideration for attending a track day became all the more serious. It's a shame that seriousness happened the week we got snow, but I guess this gives me plenty of time to do things like research stuff I'll need to buy to ride at one of these, namely a leather body suit - or whatever it is that's required.

Where did those that own the right stuff for track days go to get it? How much does it cost for moderately good to pretty good stuff?

Thanks,
Alex
