Got bored today and went to Shelton's to pick up the '06 literature. Couldn't believe that I didn't immediately recongize this bike for what it was:
After some closer scrutiny it became clear:
I think the intake 'frown' will create very good symmetry with the rider's bug filled grin:
The rear fender looks very much like the one on a tuber with the aluminum swingarm:
Got this shot to do a length comparo between an XB12S, XB9R and the XB12Ss. It may be an optical illusion, but the XB12Ss does look longer:
But they ain't got nothing on the barge that brought me there (thank God!):
But I did answer the age old question 'How many quarts of oil fit in a single V-Rod saddlebag?'. The answer is 5, and NO, they weren't poured in the saddlebag...

Carlos and David,
I really like what you've both come up with. At the beginning we were going with the moniker C cubed, but I think for sake of ease we started the C-3 nomeclature. One point to keep in mind is that, particularly the patches would be more cost effective (Hey, I'm an Engineer, it's my job to be cheap...) if we just had the rectangular image (and maybe left the text box below for 'rockers' for number of years affiliated with C-3 - if we want to take it that far...). I don't know what everyone else thinks, or if anyone else is even interested or concerned. Sounds like a good 'point of business' for the next meeting...
Saturday at the track sounds like the best option, even though I disagree with having to pay extra to get in the pits, which will probably mean that I won't go in the pits. At Road America your normal entrance ticket gets you into the pits. Tickets for VIR are being sold in advance at a slight discount at select outlets (but none all that close to me...).
As for the Experienced Rider Course, I am definitely game. I tried to do one last spring in New Bern, but a week before it was scheduled for I was given a refund due to insufficent people registered and was promised that they would have one in the fall (which they never did). Even though my insurance agent said that it didn't make a difference when he provided me with my estimate I would still like to do it. Plus BRAG reimburses up to $50 of a rider course.

Here's an email I received from the website I have been talking to. Here's my question. Do we HAVE to have the BRAG logo part that says BUELL RIDERS ADVENTURE GROUP? Can we just have the BRAG? Or can we as she states below, wrap that on the border of the patch?
Her email:
"I have looked over the artwork. It is a great picture. There are some things we
would need to change. The words "Buell Riders Adventure Group" will not fit
across the patch under BRAG. Letters need to be 3/16" high to be readable.
You may want to consider having them go around the inside of the patch by
the border. Wherever you want them to start and stop is fine. Let me know
about that.
For the background - you can have yellow twill which will be less expensive.
For the border - it can be merrowed (wrapped stitch) and less expensive
than laser cut.
For the backing - I would suggest plastic.
For the overall size - I would think a 4 1/2" would be good.
We can make the C3 logo larger and thicker (bolder).
My partner does the artwork and she is out of town until tomorrow night.
I will have her take a look at it also and then we'll get back to you with a quote.
I'll give you a quote for 20, 25 and 50 pieces so you can see the price break.
Just get back to me about what you think you want to do with the club name.

Can someone check this and let me know something ASAP so that I can get back with her to find out how much it would cost? If we're going to leave out the Carolina Corner Carvers, just don't do a separate patch, the patch by itself is fine. I'll work some other ideas. |

Hey yall, stupid question here. I'm thinking it might be fun to go to VIR. I've never been to a race of any sort before. Can someone fill me in on the basics? What's it cost, how many people will be there, and anything else you think I should know? |

Ah, I think you hit it with this last one David. It takes care of Brankin's engineering side, plus address my concern of being able to see the "C3", plus has your better art work. I also like Brankin's idea of date coding the members with this set up. This way the "C3" can stay the same and the chevron can change every year. Too cool.
As far as for BRAG, I do not think it will be a problem to drop the words, but before we move forward, I will e-mail Mary at Buell and ask.
What's everybody else think? Brankin, I agree with you about leaving this topic open until the next meeting, and we can discuss it. David, I will definitely leave you in the loop.
I put the Forcewinder intake on the M2 today and took it for a test ride. It definitely made a difference. On my local test loop it bested my latest 1/4 mile speed by 4mph on the first pass even with finding that false nuetral between second and third. On my next two passes I did not improve. On the second pass I didn't open up the throttle until late in second gear, still match the first runs speed. On the third pass I stood the bike up at the start hard and had to back petal to get the bike back down.
I really can feel a difference during partial throttle acceleration. It really feels like I uncorked it and gave it 5 maybe 10 more ponies.
I think I'm going to have to rejet the bike though. At higher rpm full throttle runs the bike was pinging. Is that a sign of running lean? Anyway it's top end feels stronger. On my top end test it ran up to excessive speed pretty quick and was still accelerating when I ran out safe room (line of sight). Anyway, I will rejet the carb and see what I get. |

Who is going: Right now Mike, Brankin and I are thinking about going. I haven't heard from anyone else so I do not know if anyone else is thinking of going. As far as crowds, I have not gone to an AMA race, but the Formula USA race there was plenty of room.
Cost: Tickets are $50, $45 in advance, plus $40 dollars for a pit pass.
One thing to keep in mind is that the track is over two miles long and you can not see the whole thing at one time. It was worth the ride for Formula USA at $40 for full access, but I do not know if it's worth $90 (Though I could live with $50 though I would like to go into the pits.) |

Okay new twist to this weekend.
I'm thinking about going to my in-laws up in the mountains this weekend. It's 93.3 miles from VIR according to Map Quest. This way we can ride up maybe Friday, go to the race Saturday, then ride the roads around Pete's place Sunday until its time to go home. Kristi would go up Friday during the day and if our numbers are too many for the small guest cabin, we will take out tent and set up camp next to the stream that runs through Pete's place.
The road to and from VIR is US-58 and it is an awsome road going up the mountain to Hillsville VA. Pete's place is between US-58 and BRP, so Sunday we have plenty of ways to go. We were thinking of grilling out Burger and Dogs for dinner and some type of breakfast. What do you think? |

I emailed the company I've been talking to with the design. I know it's not final, but she'll give me a quote on what I posted above for a small number. You'll have that for the meeting to help decide if you like that and the cost. I'm sure you could probably find someone closer and maybe even cheaper, but at least this will give us an idea. Okay, here is the quote from Ideal Patch, also with a picture of the patches. There are 3 different sizes. I'm waiting for a confirmation that the actual price includes both the big patch and the chevron. You tell me what you think and if this is what you want I'll let them know, whoever is back there that wants to deal with this, if you decide on this, let me know and I'll get you the contact info and let them know you will be contacting them.

Man, that looks good David and I think the price is right. After we meet in September I will start looking for a local supplier to see if the price is right. Like I said before I have a connection for stickers that we can put on the bikes, and I'll thinking of putting together a flier for Shelton's so they can pass the word about the group. I left my phone number and e-mail address with Jeremy at the Smithfield store but I think a flier would be better. Anyway, great stuff, thanks. |

Okay here is a quote of the email from Maggie about the costs of the patches, there is a second cost on the chevron. The quote for the chevron is B.
Good Morning.
There is a price for A. which is the large shoulder patch and I quoted
a 4" to left of it, and the 4 1/2" price is right below the list of colors.
The price for the rocker is B. and that is right below the description
of size for the rocker. Each piece is a separate price. The only
additional charge would be for shipping. I need to know a shipping
address to determine the cost.
We're gearing up for Hurricane Katrina now. Good old South Florida
is going to get hit again, but this should only be a category 1 - not too
bad but perhaps a lot of wind and flooding.

Hey Guys been kinda crazy with class three nights a week and my grandfather fell and due to complications is not expected to make it. So I have been kinda crazy and will probably have to put off all plans for the weekend. I missed my father-in-law today so i will see about the picture tomorrow.
I also met a fellow Buell rider tonight at school, he has a 05' black 12R just like mine. Told him to look us up. His name is Randy so keep your eyes and ears open. Later, Larry |

David, that is sure some sweet artwork! Do we really need to vote? If we do, I think it will be unanimous.
Carlos, the meeting in September is the 1st weekend? Labor Day Weekend? Hmmm...
Looks like VIR is out of the question for me, as there are so many parties concerned about my well-being (i.e. bills) and the fact that I don't feel $50 is a good value just to watch the races. If pit access were included in the admission (like it is at all the other tracks I'm familiar with) then I could see it being a must do event. Oh well, I'll still be in Virginia (and North Carolina and Tennessee) this weekend playing on and around the BRP with Carlos. Those who do make it to the races, please let us know what we missed.

After rollercoaster of a week and changing my plans for the weekend 57 times I can now confirm that I will be at the races on Saturday, even with a broken fairing mount. However, I still haven't managed to pick up tickets for the race so there's still time for my plans to be derailed. Hopefully I'll be able to pick up the tickets today during lunch and assuming my Buell doesn't send anyone else to the hospital I'll be there. My current plan is to leave semi-early Saturday morning and ride straight to the track.
Let me know if anyone wants to ride along (Jim?) otherwise I'll see some of you guys (hopefully?) at the track. |

Spike - Yea, I want to go. Tomorrow AM is good for me. I'm going to tote the g/f up there on the back of the bike. It's about 100 miles isn't it? I've never taken her that far, but it should be fun.
I assume I can buy tickets there? I have no idea where I would get them around here. (I'm a cheap bastard, and paying $100 to get me and the g/f in is going to suck but thats life.)
Jim Meyer, who I believe you used to work with, is organizing a ride up to VIR on Sunday. If no one from here was going on Sat, I was going to tag along with his group. I mention it in case you wanted to ride with him. I'd prefer Sat because I think there are Buells racing then, but not so much that either day wouldn't be fine with me. |

Jim, The plan so far is to leave my house in Fuquay around 7:45am to meet a few friends in Apex at the intersection of 55 and Olive Chapel road. There's a gas station there directly across from an Eckerd drug store. We'll be there around 8:15am. From there we're going to ride up to Wake Forest (I know, out of the way a bit) to meet my brother in law around 9am. From there we'll ride to VIR. If you want to meet up along the way give me a call on my cell phone at 919-271-7109. I'll have the phone with me tomorrow so if you leave me a message in time I'm sure we can work out a place to meet in the morning.
You can buy tickets at the gate, but they're $5 more than if you had bought them in advance. There are quite a few motorcycle dealers in the area that have tickets, Ray Price is one of them. Ray Price will be open at 7am tomorrow so if you're really motivated you could ride up there to get tickets before meeting us.
I used to work with Jim Meyer, but I haven't seen him since I left in February. I had looked into going up Sunday but I won't be able to go for the whole day on Sunday and the Buells are only racing on Saturday. If you don't make it up with us on Saturday it would be worth riding up with Jim on Sunday.

I see that those who decided to go to VIR had an enjoyable time. Here's a brief summary of the other Virginia (and Western NC and Tennessee) adventure from this past weekend summarized in a few pictures.
First off, some views by the cabin:

Saturday started with a ride from our cabin in Virginia down the Blue Ride Parkway to Boone, NC:
One very cool auto that was on the BRP:
The rest stop on the Parkway was the perfect opportunity to check out Carlos's latest mod on his M2:
Just North of Boone on US HWY 421 there was a roadsign that piqued my interest:
Unfortunately just before getting to the real good riding on 421 in TN the rains came. Even though it only rained for a short period of time most of my favorite area on 421 was covered in wet.
Just a couple of other cool pictures taken back at the cabin:
On our way back Sunday we rode right by VIR and enjoyed the sweeping curves, feeling the temperatures increasing steadily as we made our way back to Eastern NC.
The roads were GREAT and are something that definitely needs to be ridden to be experienced! Hopefully the next visit to the area will see sunny skies in order to truly enjoy the motorcycling paradise that exists in the area. Hopefully others will join in the Adventure!

Hey guys,
It sounds like everyone has had an eventful weekend.
Brandy, it's great that Ben is coming home. I know you must be excited. It will be cool to meet him and maybe have you guys over for some Cincinnati Chili.
Mike & Jim, I hope you guys liked the race. Brankin and I decided to head to the mountains instead though we drove passed the track on Sunday on the way home.
Brankin and I rode up to my Father-in-law's on Friday night. We had to make a pit stop when my turn signal reservoir let go and spit oil all over the top of the gas tank. We pulled off at Cary and rode through Suburban hell until we landed in little Mexico where we pulled over to fix the leak. Once we got the reservoir fixed, we got back on the road and made good time to the cabin.
On Saturday after breakfast, we rode down the Blue Ridge Parkway to Boone NC (75 miles). We took 421 from the parkway into Tennessee and enjoyed the view, but had to tame the ride because just about the time the road became fun, the skies opened up and rained on our parade. We made to Shady Valley TN where we turned north to US58 in Virginia. We turned back east towards Hilleville VA where the cabin is and dinner awaited. All in all we rode about 225 miles of mountain roads. Rain and all, it was worth the ride.
On Sunday the weather improved. I rode Carlee down US58 to the Parkway. We rode down the Parkway to Snake Creek Rd, where Carlee and I had the best ride of the weekend. Imagine the best part of Old Maple Hill road for about twenty miles and in 3D. It was like riding a roller coaster. I know Carlee was getting a kick out of it because on the first big downhill I could hear her hooting.
After Carlee's ride I came back and pick up Brankin. We rode down off the mountain on US58. Another great section of road. We rode right passed the entrance of VIR. The race must have just ended because all the bikes were pulling out as we rode passed. After a couple of stops we made it back before dark.
We hope to pull off another weekend up at Pete's cabin. It's in the middle of everything and the evenings you get to kick back and hear the babbling brook that goes by Pete's place. We were planning to make a run in September and maybe another in October.
As far as for the next meeting, lets set it for Saturday, September 10th. Since next weekend is Labor day weekend, we will need to push the meeting back a week. Like the last meeting, we can meet in Smithfield around 1pm. After the meeting we can ride the area backroads.
As you can see, David has come up with a Patch design. During out next meeting I want to get your in put on it and if everyone likes it, we can place orders. |

I had a great time at VIR this past weekend, the only problem is that now I'm itching to get back out on the track myself.
Nesba will be at VIR again in October. It's not quite in my budget but if I save my pennies until then my wife might approve of me going. Anybody want to join me? |

Since the speedo cable on my S2 broke today maybe I should turn it into a race bike and not worry about how fast I am going...
Oh well, the good news is the last speedo cable I bought was only $15.00. Since it was on the way to my first Myrtle Beach Bike Week experience, it made my experience that much more adventurous. That and the fact that I had to ride to Charleston, SC (~ 100 miles more) to get a replacement.
Hopefully a dealer closer will have one in stock, because on the S2 I find it WAY too easy to have an unintended meeting with Johnny Law. Fortunately when I left work Friday to meet up with Carlos Johnny Law was too busy with the two cars in the median to bother with me for lofting the front wheel right in front of him when I hit 2nd gear...
