Just as you put it Jim. Ride a tank of gas, then get off the bike for about twenty minutes. Stretch, walk around, drink a drink (no scotch though, peanuts okay) and when the time is up, your ready for another 150-180 mile jaunt. (125-140 miles if an XB is with you)

Well, I pulled the trigger and signed up for the NESBA track day at VIR South on May 14th (5/14/5).

While I consider myself an experienced rider, I am most certainly unexperienced when it comes to the track. I've read through NESBA's manual, and I think getting the bike prepped will be fairly easy since they don't require much for the beginner class. What I need to do now is arrange for transporting the bike to/from the track. I can borrow a pickup truck easily enough, but I'll need some sort of ramp for getting the bike into and out of the truck. Also, the tech inspection starts at 7am on Saturday, so I need to decide if I'm going to drive up super-early on Saturday AM or if I'm going to drive up Friday evening and find a place to crash.

I'm more than open to suggestions at this point. Also, the event still had some slots available if anyone else was interested in going. The cost of the event was ~$155 for NESBA members.

Any takers?

Mike
I have a ramp you can use, give me a ring.

I've always been told to have someone with you
to drive home, if ya get hurt.

I may see ya there, if I can find the money
and the time, and get the ok from the boss.

You'll definitely need a driver after a track day. The last one, er, the only one I did, when I came off the bike after the last session I could barely stand I was so spent. You won't believe how physical it's going to be, several times more stressful physically than anything you'll ever do on the street. If you run just 4 30 minute sessions you'll have been on the bike for 2 hours in full attack-that's draining.

Other things to think about. Take extra gas, I ran out with one session to go, so I missed an opportunity, but on the other hand, I was so tired, I don't think I could have stayed on the bike for another session. Take a good tire pressure gauge, tools, extra duct tape, a tank of air, extra fluids, some place to sit and if at all possible, an awning for getting out of the sun. A battery operated radio helps to keep track of announcements. Man, I wish I could join you!

Speaking of VIR, I want to set up a C^3 adventure there for the Formula USA/CCS race the end of June. The question is: Who is interested and and how many of the days do you want to attend? Carlos and I did Saturday and Sunday last year, staying at a hotel, but camping is permitted at the track. Anyone have a camper? I'd also like to get with Tilley's and Greensboro's chapters and invited them along, an un-official state rally if you will. It was a blast last year, could be even better this year. Who's up?

One more thing, I was talking with Brankin tonight about putting a ride together here in the east soon. Believe it or not, we have some twisties here. It ain't the mountains by a long shot, but one can string groups of roads together and make a day of it. Who's up for that?

Dave- I am definitely up for the riding session. Is this weekend too soon? If so whenever the plan is let me know and I will see if I can make it. I am looking for some more fun like we had at the end of our last ride with you, Mike (spike), and Brandy.

Mike and Mike- I would love to do a track day. Never done one and I am sure I would be the slowest guy on the track. (Anyone remember what the sticker reads on the back of my helmet?) I will have to check with the wife but if I went I would definitely have to depart that Saturday evening to be home that night. I don't think the other half would be too fond of me being gone the entire weekend. I don't know if anyone has a trailer that could fit all our bikes but if push comes to shove I have no problem riding my bike up there. Only problem would be as you mentioned if I did the whole crash thing and that caused it to be a non rideable bike on the way back. Even though I am sure I would be uncomfortable on the way back I have no doubt in my mind that I would make the drive on the bike. I am rather persistent and eventually the pain goes away, right. I will let you know how the other half reacts to my suggestion. John

Mike- I'll give you a call about the ramp sometime this week.

Dave- Gas is something I hadn't thought to bring. I know the paddock at the North course sells expensive fuel, but I'm not sure about the South paddock. It looks like NESBA's schedule is six 20-minute sessions, I'd hate to be on track with the fuel light glowing.

I'm definitely in for the F-USA/CCS races. With sufficient notice I'll bet I can even talk my wife into camping at VIR for the weekend.

John- It'd be great to have you along for the track day. No worries about being slow, learning to go faster is what track days are all about. Besides, I'll bet the slowest guy on the track is having more fun than the fastest guy on the street, and he's doing it in a safer environment. It looks like NESBA's schedule ends the day around 5pm, so getting home Saturday evening shouldn't be a problem. The harder part is getting there Saturday morning. Tech inspection opens up at 7am and from what I'm reading it's best to be at the track by 6:30am. I'm debating driving up Friday evening just to make Saturday morning easier. Riding to VIR and back isn't a bad ride, but riding to the track for a track day isn't recommended. As Dave said, a day on the track is quite draining.

I'll be bringing all the supplies I can think of (tools, food/water, chairs, etc.) so anyone who can make it up is welcome to share my supplies. I think it'd be great if we could get a group of people going to track events on a regular basis. That way we could all share supplies and split the load of trying to get everything needed to the track. Some of the Mazda guys I know did that for automotive track events, it worked great. One of the guys would even bring his grill and cook if he wasn't driving in the event. I'm hoping to find a nice lightweight open trailer that I can tow with the 3. If I can find one I'll use the 3 for taking the bike to the track and I'll have plenty of space in the car for bigger supplies like coolers, an EZ-up tent, chairs, etc.

Spike, I'd go along if for nothing but moral support but there's no way to get Sat this month, considering I'm going to ask for a whole weekend at the end of June.

John, you REALLY don't want to ride to a track day event. It really takes a ton out of you physically and mentally, and you've really rung the bike out hard so you'll want to go over it afterwards.

Mike- Unfortunately I am not able to make it. Sucks for me as I was really looking forward to going. Plus that was my only chance to go which is another reason I was looking to go. Basically was looking at getting some critique'ing ( yes I know that is spelled incorrectly ) on what I could improve on and what I was good at. Do you know if California has anything along the lines of NESBA out there? I am hoping so because I really want to get into track days.

For everyone else- so when is this "east" ride supposed to be going. If I cant have the track day we can at least get some more riding in.

The first track day I attempted kind of put a damper on my enthusiasm for them. It was a Homecoming event years ago. It rained all day and we waited at Blackhawk Farms most of the morning before they called the event a wash. Got to do one lap in the rain around the track. I've also done the parade lap around Road America at every Homecoming they've had it. It's fun being out there, that's for sure. I think I must be in preservation mode with my S2 now. When the day comes that I add an updated Buell to my stable then it will be time for me to hit the track with a vengeance. Until then I will just have to live vicariously. So please Spike (and anyone else who goes), share your experiences with us! Take pictures if you can (or force me to go along as your photographer).

Dangitall, I want to experience VIR and what Ayden is proposing sounds totally kick arse, but my calendar is already booked for that weekend in June. Since they have changed the logistics of camping at the Smoke Out, this may be my last year in attendance. This would free up future years, but does me no good for now. The event Ayden is proposing really sounds too cool. Now if I wake up early (& sober) on Sunday I could make it home to New Bern swap bikes I would make it up to VIR...TOO DAMN LATE...

As Ayden stated, we have talked about a ride in the East. YES, There ARE some cool roads in this area. Everytime I have gone riding with Dave we have always been able to put together a fun ride. I am definitely up for that, and hope that we will be able to enlighten a lot of the group (especially those more towards central NC). It should go without saying, but also I'd like to meet everyone that I missed at the last meeting. Does anyone have any suggestions as to when to do it? My original thought was to do it in conjunction with Bubba Blackwell performing at New River H-D/Buell in Jacksonville, but I don't think we should limit this ride around the schedule of an event. Any proposals? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Spike-
Are you still interested in Homecoming? If you are, the extra accomodation is yours. If not, let me know and I will see if one of the guys I rode with at Running the Ridge last year is interested.

Yohinan-
I'm glad to see that we have someone with 'cojones' in our group to post as you did in another area on badweb! I think you handled the tender subject delicately. Seriously though, that's what this board is about - finding out information about Buell's, what other people have done and gaining from their experiences. Good to see you taking to it so well.

Ayden-
What can I do to ease the preparation of these events? I guess I didn't take your hints when we talked the other night. Please let me know, as the only way we will get anything out of our group in its young stages is from involvement of the members. I am willing to do whatever I can, and I will find a way to fit it into my schedule.

Sorry to be so long (in both this post and between posts),

Hello ladies and gentleman, When is your track day? If I could pull it off I wouldn't mind going just for the enjoyment of checking it out and supporting. I have a small trailer( 4x8) got tie down eyelets on 4 corners. Don't know how the lights are, and got a storage container on the tongue.
I'd love to come up and ride east with you all, just this is the last 2 weeks of college and it is kicking my arse! Can't wait to get over that way and meet everyone, again!
Let me know when your next get together is and I'll try to make it, L8r, JIM

Spike-
Have fun at the track day. I wish I could go, but this year I am stretched with work, school and events I already have planned. On top of everything, I believe I need to tear down the M2. It has been for sometime now suffering from what seams to be an internal leak. With work and finals I have just parked it the last two weeks and have been riding the Nighthawk to work. Tonight I have to finish my last final and then I have allot of work around the house to catch up on and need to get started on the M2.

To all -
By the way, I do have a three bike trailer. Its not all that, but it has trailered both my bikes to Washington DC and back. If anyone ever needs it let me know. I even pondered like U4euh, trailering you guys to the track. Like Jim I would like to go for moral support if anything else but I really need to get caught up around here.

Dave -
That said, I am in for VIR for the races. I want to camp. I may truck it there with the wife and camp. I think the family would enjoy it. I would need to borrow your pocket bike for the "kids" and the fun is on.

Dave -
I am also open for the ride in the east. Just let me know tomorrow or later if I can help with arrangements, plan routes, etc. I have to ditto Brankin's suggestion that we could make the ride around Bubba Blackwell's event. A little recruiting, a little promotion and allot of fun.

Carlos,

Don't fret about the M2. What you are up against is a very easy afternoon job. Like I've said before I have all the tools to do the job (some better torque wrenches may be beneficial). Before you get ready to do it, let's consult on the parts you will need (updated primary shoe, updated crankcase seal, updated shifter wheel, and updated primary gasket - I think that covers it). We can either do it in my garage (beware the afternoon/evening sun comes right in the garage) or I can be bribed into bringing my tools and traveling... Whenever you are ready, just let me know.

Now that you mention it, it would be damn impressive to show up as a group in numbers for Bubba Blackwell's stunt show... Hmmm...

O.K. I'm going to try this and hope it gets out, my stupid computer is acting up again. So here it goes.......

Mike (Norris), my e-mail is useless right now, but don't sweat it, I was just curious why we would want to go that way. How's the prototyping coming?

John, I haven't forgotten about the suspension parts when I'm home. It's at work when I seem to forget. I will ask today, promise. California is track day central, your going to Mecca for that type of thing. Road racing is very popular in Cali so there are groups galore and I think NESBA is national so you should be good to go.

Carlos, Brankin, I have an old tool or two in my garage, think I might even have a torque wrench(or three) so if you want to use my shop, that's cool.

On the east ride, logistics, and promotion are the two biggies. I'm off this Monday, I'll try to figure out a good route. Need to come up with some places for stops. I want to plan so we can string as many good roads together without having to do too much burning the center out of the tires. I could also use help nailing down a date. On VIR, sounds like a go, I'll contact the other 2 BRAG chapters and se if we can't get a big 'ol group of bikes together.

Glad to see there are other people interested in going to see Bubba. I stumbled across him in St. Paul last summer and really enjoyed his show. I'm planning to go to Jacksonville to see him in June.

Here is my deal. My kids want to go as well, and my girlfriend will have just taken the MSF class the weekend before. I'll probably take the car and the Blast down. I'll let her ride as much as she wants to, and I'll drive the kids. We will have fun, but thats probably not the kind of convoy you want to be a part of, but you certainly welcome. It would be great to meet some of you down there.

PS: I have a list of things I almost said and an retrospect am very glad I didn't. "Are you pregnant" shows up on that list quite a few times. When I saw Bubba last summer I was right up against the rail and he would stop next to me to set up his stunts. I almost told him, with an audience of thousands, "your headlight is out."

Bubba Blackwell is scheduled to be performing at New River H-D/Buell in Jacksonville on Saturday June 18th. On Bubba's website it mentions that his first child is due June 14th, so I am wondering if we should plan around the 18th or not, or just plan the ride for the 18th and take whatever comes with Bubba.

Yea, I noticed that Bubba had a child comming 4 days before his show. I wonder if its a planned C section, or if thats just the due date. Bubba may be a bit supprised by how little control he has over his own schedule for the next, oh 20 years.

But I'm going down there anyway. It will be a nice ride, and if Bubba shows up, it will be even better.

Allright, let's get this started. My schedule for May:
15th - BRAG Meeting (where?)
20th-22nd - Myrtle Beach Bike Week
28th-June 7th - East Troy/West Bend, Wisconsin for Homecoming

For something that I can participate in during May it either has to be this weekend (not my preferred option) or the same weekend as the BRAG meeting.

Any suggestions for dates in May? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Looks like the weekend of the Brag meeting for me, unless you want me to bring the wings without the horse.

We initially talked during the last Brag meeting about a ride that would start east and wonder west to Smithfield. I was thinking about starting the ride somewhere in Jacksonville, wondering to Maple Hill, turning toward Smithfield via Hwy 50. About 125-150 miles plus getting to Jacksonville and home from Smithfield. Too much? That's my though anyway.

I wish I could ride when I come home on leave next month, but I'm not taking the bike out of storage yet. Speaking of next month. Bubba and NRHD would have to plan that stunt show days after I leave to come back over here, dangit. : ) Ya'll take it easy and carve a few for me, enjoy and be safe. Talk to you later.

Question: Has anyone been to The Air Show here at Cherry Point before? If so, is it a fun time and decent crowd or is it packed like a sardine can and a death trap of traffic? I was thinking about going tomorrow and thought it would be best to check in with someone who might know first hand before I do.

Brandy, it's a good show but it is a VERY popular event here in the east so the crowds are HUGE. They manage traffic pretty well but the talent of local cage operators is, well, suspect at times. Go, have fun, just be patient.
