Went for a nice 150 mile ride after work today. Went to see my new neighborhood & then rode up to the Dells for a late lunch. Kinda cool being only 30 miles away from there.

Supposed to rain tonight & then who knows what the rest of the week. And I am so enjoying riding around right now. Totally different roads & locales.

I have to check into the licensing school more but the beginning of May just doesnt work for me at all. Will be kinda busy with painting, laying carpet & oh yea..moving. Havent moved in a long long time & I think its going to suck.

Who's going to the first "Buell ride to Dundee" this Sunday?
There will be some Appleton riders there.

Hellion, I'll agree with ya there : )

Jason, you should help me bug Court to get me in contact with someone who can give me the 3D models of the S3 body parts. We could then make you a fiberglass/carbon fiber mold of the fairing without the headlight hole : )

Steve, can you build molds off of existing parts? I wouldn't expect that anyone would release the models of the parts as it they are probably suppliers' drawings/models. Now, the actual tool itself may be owned by Buell...

You can... There are several different ways to go about doing it.

Cheapest way is to take the original part, and fill a cavity/box full of great stuff foam. But 1st coating the original part with some sort of mold release agent. After the mold sets up 100%, coat it with epoxy, and voila' instant CF/Fiberglass mold. : )

The more expensive, but best results would be to have the part 3D scanned in. I can then take the point cloud data to create the model of the original part, and then make the mold. This way, you can add your own features, such as added strength ribbing, and removing things like the headlight hole. Unfortunately, i don't have free/easy access to a scanner to scan the parts in. However, I do have 2 extra tail sections, 2 fairings, 3 sets of saddle bags, etc.. : )

I've never actually made a fiberglass mold myself. But I picked up a book on HOW to mold composites like cf and fiberglass. The S3s fairing and saddlebags are one thing I'm really interested in reproducing. That is, if people quite giving us so much work! I had 73 hours in last week, and 82 the week before! : ( Barely time to breathe, much less think about "government" jobs.

The good news is.. We have a a lathe now, so once I do get a day free, I'll start on those stinkin' frame sliders : )

Generally, the tool itself *IS* owned by the company for which the parts go to. That is how Buell has done molds in the past, and I remember stamping Property of Buell Motor Company or some such when we did the air box molds for the X1s back in '98.

But, since I'm not positive, but I do think the current body work for the tubers has been "obsoleted" by Buell, I'm going to try and obtain a 3D model of the bodywork for the S3s. I don't want to directly copy the parts, but to make subtle changes. Such as stronger, and a little larger saddlebags. Remove the rectangular headlight hole from the fairing, and add projector style lights, etc...

But anyhow, here's the book I picked up. Very interesting, and informative.

As a supplier, the tools we use are owned by our customers (eventually - payoff often goes with the length of the program). That being said, the drawings and models are ours and we would be rather upset if our customers shared those with anyone else, even if the program is complete.

Now, that's one situation. Another situation is how we work with some of our suppliers. In the case of some components on the coolers I design, the drawings and models are ours, and we ultimately own the tooling as well so we can do with them as we please (sort of, but I won't go there). Basically the supplier is kind of a "job shop" in this case.

I don't know how Buell works with their suppliers related to bodywork, but if it's like the first case, you probably won't be able to get the stuff. If it works like the second, you might have a shot.

Steve,
also check out the homebuilder resources of experimental aircraft. Lots of material on that around, plus the EAA convention is coming up soon in Oshkosh. http://www.eaa.org/

The way it works with us, is... The customer is paying for the design/build of the tooling. They own it, and do with it as they please. We often get tooling prints from our customers, that other mold builders have built for them in that past. The reason they give them to us, is there is always a bazillion ways to build a mold/die. But they want it to work *EXACTLY* as the previous one.

I'm not looking to get tooling prints/models. I could care less about the tooling models. I want the actual part model. I design/build molds all day long, I think I can figger' it out from the 3D part model : )

And like I tell people when they ask me what I do for a living... "I draw 'purdy 3D pictures all day". The Buell fairing/tail section and bags would be just another 'purdy 3D picture : )

I'd guess that the drawing and models of the components themselves are Buells so they should be able to distribute as they see fit, just as if they were looking to change suppliers and sent them out to be quoted. If that's the case, you might be able to score them.

I'd think Buell has design control over those kind of components (bodywork). If we were talking about something like the oil cooler on an XB, most likely the supplier has design control and it would be a different story.

Steve et all....

another great resource i use is

http://www.aircraftspruce.com

Just about anything you could dream of as far as composites and fiberglass go. They supply composite aircraft builders so they have good stuff and excellant advice. Quite a few 'composite starter kits' as well, including one for $35 kit from Burt Rutan himself (builder of the first private venture into space....). Invaluable site if your doing any sort of glass work or mold building.

Is this still the Belle City Page? Or has it become the new "How to build your own Race Bike Parts" thread. Anyone heading up to the races on the 23rd? What about Homecoming? Anyone going to that? What about trying to get a group going to one of the Track Days? This weekend I'll be in La Crosse fishin' for Walleye on the Mississippi, so no riding for me. Inquiring minds want to know. I sure hope this year has more rides than last year.

Hey, we've been discussing track days here also : )
I'm thinking about may 25 or/and june 23.
Depends on $ if I can make both.
I'll be racing at the Autobahn C.C. the weekend of june 25-26, So a little track time prior to would be nice, but if they don't let us camp there : (
I believe coolice will be at the june 23 event.
Ugriz and Dyna are planning on the may 25 event, and Racerx1 will be there working/playing : )
What about the rest of the club???

I am thinking about the May 25th date. I will no for sure in a week after we get everything for our move squared away.

Rocco, thanks for the trailer and the help getting the ball off the bumper of my truck! I forgot to get the key off the tonneau cover when I left your house. Amazingly it was there Sunday morning when I went out to the truck.

Congrats Cosmo! Time to get some miles on the bike.

Just to let everyone know, when we were in at Racine HD yesterday, Jay from service offered up this -

Have everyone send me their VINs, and I'll forward them on to him. He'll do a recall/update check on every VIN, and print out a sheet for everyone with a list of any recalls or updates that your bike might need and then if you want them to do the work, he'll order up the kits.

So anyone interested in this, just shoot me an email with your VIN and I'll forward it on to Jay.

FYI - Union grove is open for 'free' time trials tonight (still have to pay spectator gate fee). I think I'm going out to do some baseline work with the buell drag bike and experiment with some gearing. Anyone want to go play tonight????
