For those who've ridden Sportsters...

If they were the same price, what would you recommend? Is an 883 that much slower than a 1200? If you could get a new Iron 883 or a used (in very good cond.) Nightster, which would you pick, based on performance? Style wise, they're very similar.
I've heard there's a noticeable difference between the 883s and 1200s.

I would get a used 2002 Sportster Sport and make it into a blacked out bike. IMHO, they didn't make them better by adding 50lbs with the rubber mount frame.
But, I will answer the question; Iron 883. I like the black motor and mags, and the $2k less price tag for basically the same bike.

Concur with BT05, mostly!
Vanvideo: I think the question for you might be how much slower is the 883 than your XB9? If power is of supreme importance, then I dont think you'll be happy knowing you could have gotten a 1200. Same price-I'd get the 1200, only if it had a warranty. If I were you. (Me, I'd by the cheapest 883 and modify it).

My opinion, maybe not as helpful as you'd needed though.

Actually, I now ride a ZX-10R, so either biker will be a lot slower than what I'm used to.
So, for performance's sake, go for the 1200? Is it that noticeable?

The difference between the 883 and 1200 is very noticeable. 883 has about 45hp, the 1200 close to 70. Nobody with a 1200 ever wishes they got the 883 instead.

Used nightster is my recommendation. Put the 883 primary gearing in it an you will surprise a lot of riders up to about 80mph.

That is my favorite combo.

I have the 883R (in black & orange of course)
A good stage one exhaust (like the thunder header) and big air cleaner with the larger jets will get you close to the stock power of the 1200. I like the gearing of the 883R better than the twelve, it just seems punchier.

My fast, fun, and cool looking '09 Nightster is for sale.
It's low-low miles (238) and has many extras.
I can't afford 2 bikes, so am keeping my XB12scg

Well, I opted for the used Nightster. I picked up an 07 model, as I mentioned in another thread. Thanks for your recommendations.

Nice pipes! Is that your bike? I like the fact that they increase ground clearance. I'm really scraping parts on the Nightie.

just one they let me build in the shop. Its nice to have the flexibility and the direction to create some of the bikes that roam around in my head. Nothing outrageous, just a set up for banging around town.

Van, I have ridden Sportsters since 1979. Ironheads, Evos, 54 inch, 74 inch and 89 inch motors. My GF has a Nightster right now and I love riding it (when she lets me). I saw and sat on the new 883 and I was impressed. I would probably get the 1200. Unless either bike is perfect for you from the factory you will want to set it up to suit your needs, seat, handle bars etc.

If Lynn ever gave me her bike I would change the seat and put drag bars on it and set up the shifter different. Other than that I would have one in a heart beat. I would not turn down a 883 either.

Ride them both and then choose.

I alway thought a 883 with buell heads and pistons, a 1200 or 1250 kit had better performance, Than a stock 1200. Anyone else?

F_Skinner, I already chose and picked the Nightster. No regrets here at all, the bike is a blast. I plan on putting drag bars on it, maybe e freer flowing exhaust.

Van, guess I should have read the whole thread LOL.

I look forward to pics. I would go with drag bars as well. I put Rush (http://www.epiflex.com/) exhaust on Lynns and they do not require messing with the ECM. It sounds great. That bike pulls like a train off the line.

the rush's look nice, but they really ought to offer a black heat shield, get that last bit of chrome off that bike.
