I bought a new XB12R about two weeks ago and I have 486 miles on it already. The dealer told me to bring it in a 500 miles for it's first service. They are going to charge $275.00 for three hours of labor. Does this sound right or are they trying to make a quick buck? The manual doesn't mention this service at all.. What is up with this?

Hmmm... I changed my oil at 300 and 700 and then let them do the 1000 mile service that's mentioned in the manual. I've done my own service since then.

I've never heard of a 500 mile service. Smells fishy to me. Looking in my service manual they recommend 1000 miles for the first service. I'd ask them for a detailed list of services they were going to provide. Hell, at 500 miles the rings aren't even set yet!!!!

I thought the first service was at 1k? and then after 2500 miles or something like that.

They have be pretty worried about this break in thing, I just hope I do it right. I haven't exactly been doing it by the book... But I am paranoid because of my X-1 which was recalled.

Generally, a 500mi. service is a fluids change with a safety check: cables, bearings, tires, battery, etc. I don't think I've seen one take more than an hour.

I have no problem doing all that myself I just don't want any warranty issues... I guess it is the same as the 1k service.

My dealer recommended a 500 mile service. Basic stuff though.Oil and filter, check neck torque, basically did a double check on everything to make sure there was nothing that was going to cause a problem. BUT, they only charged me $110.00. Felt like it was worth it to have that extra piece of mind, seeing as how they documented everything, I made sure of it!

I know Buells have a 1000 mile service. On Harleys they have a 500 mile service also. Maybe they are treating your Buell like a Harley. Now as for the price. That sounds like to much. Ask them what they will have to do to your bike to cost that much. Ask them as many question as possible and write down their answers. Get something in writing to cover your ARSH! Brupska

As I remember, I had a 500 mile break in.. (toughest 500 miles you'll ever ride) I even asked the dealer about it and they said to wait until 1K miles for a full service. However, I have heard that changing the fluids and checking it over isn't a bad idea either for a new machine, just to make sure everything is A-OK.

If you're going to do it yourself, use only factory parts & filters and keep your paperwork showing when and what you did yourself. I don't think you'll have warranty issues if you can show that you used exactly what they say to use, however one of the dealer folks would be best to verify that.

Save all of your receipts and write down what you do (service manual is a must). I've been doing my own scheduled maintenance since day one except for the fork oil change, didn't have the tools for that. I haven't had any issues when I took it in for warranty work. Of course, mods change back to factory.

I guess I'm in the minority here but I broke in my XB the hard way. Via this way...
http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

15K later runs like a champ. I don't agree with the norm that it takes 1-2k to set the rings. Most break in happens in the first 100 miles.

When I bought My XB12S, my dealer also told me to do a 500M Service
There is no such thing as a 500M service in the Buell Service Manual...
I guess this is a other way to get more $ from you....
Follow the service manual and you will be fine : who do you trust more : Buell people who wrote the manual or you HD dealer :-)

Hope this helps

Harleys have their first service at 1000 miles now too. Been that way for a few years.

PS,
If it was my bike I'd drop the first oil at 500 or less, then again at 1000 while doing the rest of the 1000 mile service.
I wrote up the whole list of things done on the 1000 mile service a while back, not going to do it again but it is waaaay more than just a fluid change.
Look in your owners manual, it list everything that is done.
The 1000 mile service is probably the most important service your bike will ever get.
Make sure you trust the person/shop doing it.

Harley used to recommend the first service at 500 miles, but they have since switched to recommending the first service at 1k miles. I *think* they made the switch with the introduction of the twin cam 88 motor. Many dealers still recommend the first service at 500 miles. I doubt this dealer is trying to scam you by asking for a service at 500 miles, but you might want to call around for a 2nd opinion on the price.

FWIW- I had a 500 mile service done on my XB12R and then changed the oil myself at 1k miles. Both times there was a noticable amount of metal "fuzz" on the magnetic drain plug which leads me to believe that the engine was not completely broken in after only 500 miles. If I had the chance to do it again I'd probably do it the other way around by changing the fluid myself at 500 and having the service performed at 1k, which is exactly what Dave recommended.

Johnny, to be safe, change your motor and tranny oil if you're okay with completing that yourself and save your receipts. Oh, one more thing. ENJOY THAT THING, ya lucky dog!

I changed the oil and tranny fluid at about 500mi, and gave it a solid once-over.
I let the dealer do the 1k service to avoid any "warranty issues"(read: dealer BS).

And plan to change over to Mobil-1 v-twin, next chance I get.

I will be doing all of my own service from now on, unless I need a tps/afv reset or something.

tank

p.s. I paid about $220-$230 for the 1k service.

I've changed my oil six times in 12K miles and I've gtten more metal flakes than I thought I wanted each time. More from the primary than the engine...

Also...

This has all of MY maintenance in it... but just clear that out for your use. I did NOT create this. I can't remember who did, but they are a badweber. I'd give them credit if I knew who to give it to...

I think maybe there might be some confusion between the 500 mile break in and the 1000 mile service.

When I bought my bike, the service department charged the sales department for the 1st service... (free 1st service)
All I had to pay for was materials...
next to bugger all...

I did my first dealer service at 1k...I've changed my fluids every 1k thereafter and done the other service manual tasks as well...I'm at 6500miles now...I love working on my own bike. If my bike fails I can't get pissed off since I am to blame.
