Steve, Slaughter, ditto on foolish. I'm a Pro/E guy and I see a rediculous amount of parts, and none of 'em are simple. It would be quicker to get hired at Buell and steal the parts files!

Hi,

Why try to scan the Bike, when you can buy for around $50, a pretty good model ? : see my precedent post

This could be a good starting point

Hope this helps

I am a professional Designer / CAD drawer as well (in the Netherlands). I've been thinking about drawing the XB in CAD once, but I would be insane... really insane..

Before that, I came up with this bike:

www.carvx.com

It's insane too... ; )

Wow, so many replies to this:

My goal was to produce a 3D model, not for manufacture or selling off plans..

Just as a little project to fill in some time.

The 3D studio Max web site has a nice model of an XB, I think I may just register & pay the $$ for a 3D model.. Gee for $50 that's quite good, My company charges me out more than that for 1 hours work.

Many thanks to everyone whom replied.
Appreciated.

if you buy the 3d model is there away to make changes to it, you know customize it?

it's easy to replace surfaces and add parts, or draw parts for it..

I am curious if the file set up is clean and done well.

We will need a "ride report" if you do pick it up!

I'd need to modify the beast to look more like a Firebolt.

Kinda kewl

Now, keep in mind, a 3DS Max file isn't really surfaces, but triangle meshes. More similar to an STL file than a surface file.

Yep, you're right Steve. That's also why I am curious about the quality of the file.

You can find on 3dcafe.com several free things ordered in catagories, but most of it is sh*t.

On the other hand, it would be quite cool to have a STL scaled model(rapid prototyping) of your bike with the mods you've made..

Y'know... since we have CAD models for desktop display purposes of some of our stuff at work, I wonder if Buell doesn't have a simpler, cleaned set of STL's that could be used to "grow" one.

Wonder if it exists if they'd let it go...

I'm sure they can produce the desired STL files. But, it's highly doubtful they would release them out to the public. As it is, most 1st tier suppliers to Buell/HD have NDAs to sign(non disclsure agreements), etc...

As a corporation, I'm sure they don't want the liabilities associated with us repoducing their parts : )

Like I've said before, I tried to aquire the 3D models of the saddlebags and fairing for the S3Ts, with no luck because of the liability fears. And my employer has been a 2nd tier supplier to HD/Buell.

Yeah Steve - I'd seriously doubt they'd let go of a simplified small model.

Since the Spanish model maker folks (can't remember their name) are selling their 1/24th scale models on ebay and other places, there's not too much motivation to lose a couple days effort.

I don't think it'd be that hard to draw it in ProE, which I've used for over a year. I do a lot of "reverse engineering" of tube fittings at work, especially flow controls. The thing that would make or break it would be being able to take it completly apart. Then you could get pretty accurate measurements of the critical dimensions of each component. You'd have a ton of parts, but with sub-assemblies it'd all go together pretty well.

Take a couple months at 40 hours a week, but you could get something pretty good in the end.

Dang - we should start the BadWeb CAD Department officially! I too wrote a letter to headquarters (maybe 3 years ago now) requesting engineering prints of the 1996 S1 so I could model it up. I was politely denied my request.

I 3D design plastic injection molds in SolidWorks - and mess around with Mastercam in the CNC department. I also freelance 3D industrial and mechanical design. My brother and I started Bullseye Engineering, Inc., and mainly focus on IT Solutions, but I provide 3D solutions as well.

It'd be real fun to model up our bikes, but there's no ROI involved, and it's a HUGE undertaking if you're going to reverse-engineer all visible external components individually.

Maybe we (us BadWed CAD Brigade) can collectively decide on a bike model, and deligate certain areas to certain individuals with the most applicable CAD program concerning bike parts to be modeled up. Like the tank (or air-box on the XB's) would be better done in a free-form surfacer or like you guys were mentioning above - digitize the sucker and go from there. I could contribute mostly mechanical components and assemblies, including wheels, motor, etc.

Then we could choose who's got the best rendering platform for a photo-realistic end result.

Once all this is said and done, we'll officially be open for business as the BadWeb CAD Brigade!!

From starting this thread a couple of weeks ago, it's surely grown.
Wow, so many CAD operators/designers out there that ride Buells.
(thats pure class, all the way)

I second the thought for a BADWEB CAD section.

I triple the Badweb CAD section.
I think many would benefit from prints/3d models of factory and aftermarket parts.

Socal, I'm also a Tool/Mold/Die designer.

CAD drawings for the xb would be realy nice. im still in school for this kinda stuff and i would love to be able to put these plans in a rapid-prototyper and make a model of my bike....and then get a grade for it too!!

And in Solidworks too, nice job!

Keep us posted if you're going to do more on it or another project, I'd totally like to check it out.
