On an XB9R, there's a single fairing bolt just ahead of the rear pillion seat. Well, I spun the damned rivnut putting my black bodywork on. Didn't bother me too much at the time, but since I dismantled the bike for the tire and fork oil change I figured I'd fix that, too.

Any suggestions on how to fix this thing? I suppose I could 2-part epoxy it, but there's gotta be something better short of welding it in. Also discovered that I'd lost 3 more fairing bolts since swapping the plastics...never happened before - see what I get for following the torque specs? LOL

(got my frame pucks and black heel guards on, waiting for JetHot to get back to me on my header, and Keith should be sending my swingarm sliders Thursday...almost there!)

are helicoils an option?

use loctite against losing bolts.

I'd prefer not to change the bolt size/pitch. I'm more interested in some good way of anchoring the existing rivnut than I am replacing it.

I am not familiar with the "rivnut" used on the XB bikes but I have used many different types. I would go to a nut and bolt supply store and check out their selection. I think you could use a long bolt with a nut and washer to install them with out the tool. In my experience once they let go they just need to be replaced.

Davefl, I think you're on to something. They are just crushed to expand similar to a pop rivet aren't they?

Yes that is the basic Idea. I found a MAC "Nutsert" tool at a pawnshop several yeas ago and I do not know how I lived so long without it. The tool I use looks just like a rivet gut but with interchangeable threaded mandrels to pull and expand the inserts. For a few dollars you could get a box full of the size the bike uses.

Ther eis only two options that I've heard that are sucessful once this has happened. Replace it with a new one - most engineering shops can do it pretty quickly, or get a small tack weld on it and do the rest while your at it.

Hmm...well, maybe I should just pop by my buddy's dad's place and have him tack weld the damned thing in...
