It's not as much the topic as the energy you put into it ... all without validating your claims . Without even clearly defining what it is you would like to discuss? You are looking to discuss this, right. Not just looking for confirmation of your own conviction? I'm sure you by now have noticed, that many here prefer a technical discussion backed by solid evidence , rather than "it's like this because I say so - and if you don't agree you're just plain nuts." Are you discussing XB handling in off-roadish conditions, where long suspension is a must to clear obstacles? In which case even the standard XB is lacking. Are you discussing actual handling - providing smooth roads. More like a track setting? In which case the CG lower center of gravity should allow it to be turned in quicker as well as be quicker to flip left/right through an S-turn. Are your concerns that, should you hit an obstacle rock/pothole, that the muffler will hit and send you flying? I'm guessing yes. If youi hit anything big/deep enough to be a concern, really, how much of a difference will that 1" make? And, won't the slightly stiffer suspension of the CG to an extent make up for that difference (it will)? Maybe take the time to consider and refine your point so we can have an apples-to-apples discussion. quote:SAME RIDERS, SAME ROAD, SAME POTHOLE, ONE RIDER just nicks the bottom of his can (exhaust) ...THE other rider HITS IT HARD
I'd still like this repeated in sensible English. Or have you had too much coffee to speak coherently? Incidentally, I've had three cups, plus a can of Coke. Too much, in my book. You CANNOT be the 'same' riderS (plural). Same = one and only. 'Similar' would be a better moniker. OK, so now we have similar riders. Similar how? Size / weight? Riding ability? Both? Let's go with that. The two rider's are so SIMILAR in both physical characteristics AND riding ability that they may as well be the same. Now the only true difference we have is the bike, right? Well, yes and no. Ride height is one thing. Am I willing to trust the ground clearance figures on the Buell website? Yes. So, we have one bike that is 0.8" lower to the ground to begin with. The suspension is completely different. Do you know if it was set up properly for your friend's size and preferred riding style? If you truly were the 'same', and there is 2" of difference in the ground clearances on the two bikes, then your friend's preload settings are SCREWED UP. Or yours are. Perhaps their damping settings are wrong, allowing the bike to bottom too quickly, while yours are correct, letting the bike 'float' over the pothole. ...but you know, I still come back to this: Go around the damned things. A motorcycle tire needs a couple of inches. Do you mean to tell me that there wasn't 2" of even pavement ANYWHERE across that 9' wide lane? I find that rather difficult to believe. |

You have entertained us all though !! Not really, pretty poor trolling effort. I dont even understand what the point of his rant is? So the Low sits lower...well duh thats why its called a low. Next thing you know he will be complaing that monster trucks are too tall & dont fit under the drive thru roof at McDonalds. |

Hogs...not hitting home with anything. No LOW blow here. (ouch...bad pun) I, like most everyone else here, is wondering why you got so fired up about a topic that really doesn't apply to you. If you had a Low and it caused you to wreck because you couldn't avoid that 2" deep pothole, you'd have something to bitch about. Other than that you've just rambled on and attacked everyone else that has had an opinion that didn't agree with your insight. Sorry you got out on the wrong side of the bed today. Go for a ride, it may make you feel better. |

As far as potholes are concerned ...abre los ojos..I have been in 2" deep potholes with my Low and i have had no problems, I have never hit one whilst leaned over ,but then I do ride with my eyes open. I am sure the potholes in NYC can't be any worse than those in Nova Scotia, eh |

No reference to getting high so it can't be 420. 420's version would be like this, So there i wuz, just after puffing some goooood Canandian buds, riding down the road at 145 mph and here comes this big ole pothole(no pun intended) right at me. Good thing i ride a XB9R cause a low would've hit the muffler, man. u like my versiion? Dave Just bustin on a ya a little 420 |

Disregarding ground clearance, I cant see why a lower bike/cg would create a performance problem. What rolls in turns faster? A lower bike will, because there is less inertia to resist lateral rolling during turns. What accelerates faster? A lower bike will, because the force produced at the rear contact patch is more parallel to the direction of travel b/c of the lower CG. The bottom/rear of the bike cannot "pass" the CG if the CG is more "forward" than "above" the spot the forward force acts on. Am I wrong? BTW-- what is this fanatic hatred of lower bikes? |

Just read the whole thread (bored waiting for Ivan update) and I think I've got it!! Hogs can't touch the ground on a regular XB. He gets p1ssed off, feelings of inadequacy creep in, and he lashes out at "low" XBs and those who ride them. Hogs, it's okay to be short. Height challenged. Napoleon almost conquered the world and stood what? Five feet? |

Chris, Your tone of discourse is not welcome here. Anyone who seeks to deride a Buell motorcycle model or those who prefer it, inseam challenged or no, is not welcome on this discussion board. Your choice. Thank you for understanding. A tabulation of the situation.
Model | Nominal Ground Clearance | Total Suspension Travel | Sag | Compression Suspension Travel (Full Travel - Sag) | Ground Clearance With Suspension Fully Compressed | XB12S | 4.35 in. | 5 in. | 1.2 in. | 3.80 in. | 0.55 in. | XB12SCG | 3.55 in. | 4 in. | 1.0 in. | 3.00 in. | 0.55 in. | | | | | ______________ | ____________ | | | | | Difference | 0.00 in. | Given the alternatives of not being able to maintain verticality of my motorcycle when stopped (dropping it) versus sacrificing some (20% in this case) suspension travel, I'd opt for the lowered version every time. If you are really interested, Maybe you ought to take a low model for a ride, or simply set your sag at ~2.20 inches and take your own XB for a ride. Then you will have some data to report upon. Not sure it will be objective, but it will at least be data. |
