Okay, I know this isnt your standard Buell topic, however I need some feedback/input.

I recently got promoted at work. Part of this promotion is that I will be on-call 7X24 for one week periods of time.

I have been looking for wireless/bluetooth solutions that would allow me to:
A) Enjoy my Sunday Morning Rides
B) Allow for me to continue riding my motorcycle as much as possible.

Due to the nature of the job, I have to answer the phone when it rings. Allowing the call to go to voice mail and returning the call when I get done riding WILL NOT be an option.

I have been looking at the wirless/bluetooth handsfree/car kit solutions modified to work with a motorcycle.

Has anybody seen this done? Do you know of any products that work in this manner.

Ideally I would like to have some kind of ear piece that I can answer the phone with and take calls while riding. While this may detract from my ride, it allows me to stay mobile and take care of the responsibilities I have at work.

Any input or suggestions is welcomed. For those that want to know:
I have a Nokia 6280 phone with infrared and bluetooth capabilities. I ride with a full face helmet ALL the time.

Thank you in advance,

Phil

Go look at collett communicators.

http://www.collett.mb.ca/

I have a set of wireless communicators for our helmets but I did not get the cell phone option. This is top notch stuff.

I hava a jabra ear peice the microphone is actually the part you stick in your ear. Tried it in my helmet the other day when I got a phone call. Had the phone set to auto answer and it worked prety good. I can send you the number for the ear piece tomorrow.

Your best bet would be an Autocom system. Expensive (figure $400 plus), but keeps ranking #1 in MCN tests. Their Pro system has hook-ups for music, phone, CB, radar detector (only 3 connections really, so you have to choose). They use DIN connectors and charge a fortune for each cable. But everyone that owns one says it's the way to go. I have a full set-up in a box somewhere, that I just haven't had time to install and play around with.

Any of the better 2-way helmet radios should have a cell-phone input on them. My ChatterBox does, anyways.

I have an autocom... I have the phone option... but it is too much of a distraction to use while rolling. I always let the call go to voice mail... find a safe place to pull over and return the call. It is nice not having to take off my glasses and helmet to do the call.

I have a duty officer thing every few weeks (federal agent)... they would have to pay me 24/7 to make me do the answer every call and not go to voice mail. I have to make an effort to catch the calls... I have to respond to a pager... but when they raised hell because I missed a call when I was riding... I responded... I was on my bike... I can't hear the phone (loud engine, wind noise, partially deaf which is work related & they know it, and I wear ear plugs)... the vibrate mode goes unnoticed because a motorcycle vibrates... and I WILL NOT wear a phone on my person, or have it in a pocket while riding as if a take a spill I don't want to land on it and it multiply the injury in an accident. I tell them it is in a tank bag and I check for pages when I make my normal stops... if a page is discovered with in a minute or so afterward... I will respond... if it is longer I will assume it went to who ever is next on the list and not even try... because I know the service will not hold a call for more than 3 or 4 minutes before going to the next name on the list. They conceded to this as they knew they could not dictate me 24/7 on call. I boldly asked them to put in writing that I could not ride my motorcycle during the week I have duty officer. They back peddled at mach one. Sounds like they have you by the... er ah... pay check... or something and you are cornered.

The autocom will work... but don't endanger your life for a stupid telephone call! The autocom will work on battery power or hard wired into the bike.

Autocom.

I have it and it works great. No one can tell I'm riding when I talk to them. The downside is that it is diffcult to know that the phone is ringing, though your phone may work differently (I'm on Sprint PCS).

The autocom is very expensive, but now that I have it, there is no going back. Worth every penny. Works well in the Buell tankbag too.

I have two of these... forget the brand. I was trying to kludge them up to work with FRS radios, and they didn't.

They kick for cell phone on a bike though. I could be riding at 65 down the highway and people would not even know I am on the phone.

I think they were somethign like $70 new. $40 and you can have one, I have no use for two of them. I think I could even find them.

I think they were collet brand or something.

Uhhh...what if you had to, like...react, or something? (Caution; dripping sarcasm!)
The LAST thing I'd wanna do on my bike is answer a friggin' phone, and speak with somebody impo'tant from my job (" yes sir, I believe that could be..OH,YOU SON OF A BITCH!YOU CUT ME OFF! oh, sorry sir..."; )

I do exactly that now... after a long silence on the other end I usually get this question...

"Didn't I call you at your desk???"

I respond... "yea... why do you ask??"

Couldn't find quite the page I was looking for, but it was some more comments on Autocom that, besides a Behr unit which is overpriced, is the best in quality out there, which means being on your 9s with the wind blowing on you wont stop you from actually being able to converse. The reviews I was looking for but couldn't seem to find, said the sound quality is so good that when talking to someone on the cell while they were going over 70mph, the person on the other end couldnt' even tell they were on a motorcycle it was so clear. I'll take that as a good sign. Anyway, here's the link to get you started. They do have US distributors. This is the system I'm planning on getting to replace my current one.

Here's another link off that site that will blow your mind if you've ever tried any other system.

There's a recording on this page from an instructor of a track school where they get up around 140mph, and you just barely hear a little wind noise every once in awhile. Darn cheap for the system you'd need too and easily expands to other functionality.

I know you don't want to hear this, but in my opinion, anything that distracts you from 100% full attention on piloting you scoot puts you at grave risk. Its your choice. Ride on!

I have talked to my passenger via the intercom on my BMW at speeds in excess of 100mph using the autocom. The thing works. It is pricy... but I think it is worth every penny. I can do minidisc, am/fm radio, telephone and FRS two way radio with the unit I have. It is a little bigger than a pack of cigarettes and powers up by simply plugging in the primary headset. Once my fiancee gets going on two wheels... she wants an automatic bike... but may go the Silverwing direction. I intend to get a unit for her so we can talk bike to bike via FRS walkie talkies. I have also considered connecting it to a two meter ham radio. I have an extra class license.

I'll dig up the Collet, and be happy to make a phone call to somebody at speed. They were fantastic for the cell phone, just did not work for the FRS radios. They were like $75 or something, and work really well.

Most phones can be set up to auto answer after two rings, and auto hangup after the call completes.

They can be very distracting, but you can generally pull over or stop if you need to as well. I would not recommend them for a new rider though, they can be really distracting.

Just get a City Cross box cover and install LEDs.
Wire it so the LEDs flash when a call comes in.
Pull over and answer the BatPhone ; )

Do these things degrade the effectiveness of the helmet in the event of a crash?

Only if you find an earphone skewered into your eye annoying. (he's not winking-he's blind in one eye)

The mic has to be anchored under the edge of the helmet lining, the earphones are secured to the lining at the ears of course and do well staying in place... NO CARVING IS NEEDED TO INSTALL THE STUFF IN THE HELMET for the autocom.

(formerly dasxb9s - still going deaf but not because of my autocom)
