Was wondering how the insurance is between the XB12S and XB12R. I've heard for the S it is less vs. the R. Also, how is the handling between the two?

I have the S and I'm paying about $750.00 a year(NY) A lot less than my CBR which was about 1,200.00 a year. I guess it depends where you live as we really don't get to ride from the middle of December to approximately the end of March or mid April. I hate winters here! Gotta move down south!

C2,

I've got State Farm, multi-car, homeowners and a spotless driving record. State Farm originally quoted me about $900 annually for my 12R. Two weeks later, they came back and jacked the price up to around $1200, stating "...our underwriter was not familiar with this particular model when it was first entered into SF's system." (Whatever the heck that means.) They did tell me at the time of the original quote that the 12S and 12R would have the same rate. Not sure if that holds true now or not.

(My '04 600RR runs me around $950 annually for full coverage.)

Disclaimer: I live in Texas. The major insurance players (SF, Allstate, Farmers, etc.) have been sued by the state for overcharging and have been ordered to pay rebates back to customers. So far, only Allstate has complied - State Farm is counter-suing and fighting the case.

Bastards.

Live in Florida myself and was told by the HD dealer that the insurance was less for the S being it was a different style of riding. I'm curious though also if the handling is different between the S and the R models. Might have to go with the S also due to my wrist being messed up in a motorcycle wreck some months back. Still riding today (fixed the bike I wrecked) and love sport riding, but I need something to take the weight off the wrist once in a while.

Ride both, Cataract. The Rs aren't as uncomfortable as they might look to you.

As for handling - technically the chassis is exactly the same, but the bars and seating position make a big difference in how it feels. Again, ride both, pick the one you like.

Personally I think I'm more comfortable/faster on a S on unfamiliar roads, and the R on ones I know.

Cost of the insurance is going to be totally different depending upon where you live. I'm an insurance agent in Wisconsin. Even here we can get wildly different rates with the various motorcycle insurance companies we write for. In my case, my 12R is the exact same rate as a 12S would have been. But it all depends upon the company. I'd talk to your agent, he should be able to tell you the exact price of one vs. the other in your area.

"Personally I think I'm more comfortable/faster on a S on unfamiliar roads, and the R on ones I know." - I think Erik Buell said the exact same thing in either a video I watched or article I read not too long ago.

I bought the S, but now wish I would have gone with the R. Follow Darthane's advise. Or buy the R and I'll trade you for my S. <grin>

Well, I've test rode a 9R already, should test the S. I do like the look of the R more than the S though. How are HD dealerships with test rides? (I know it varies from place to place, but I felt a general idea would be good.)
