I have a 2009 XB9 Lightning and I have a question about how the neutral light works. To start with Iíve upgraded my gauge cluster to the Motogadget mini with the Combi frame. This Combi frame has LEDís in it and thatís what Iím having trouble with. I have everything else all wired up and working fine (indicators, oil pressure, high beam) but canít get the neutral light to work properly. Looking at the wiring diagram the neutral switch has a single wire that runs to the gauge cluster and to the ECM. Iím assuming that the wire running to the ECM is what prevents the bike from starting in gear (correct?)
Ok, here is my problem. Iíve tried a couple different ways of wiring and neither worked.
1st) connected +12v switched power to the positive lead on the LED and the negative lead to the ďsignalĒ wire from the neutral switch. In this configuration the LED is on in neutral but itís also on in gear but its dimmer.
2nd) connected positive lead from LED to neutral switch ďsignalĒ wire and negative lead to ground. In this configuration the LED is off in neutral but on when in gear.
I used my multi-meter and found that when in gear I have +5v at the neutral switch and also at the wire near the handle bars (for the gauge). Now I donít know much about electricity but I was thinking that I might be able to use a diode to ďblockĒ this +5v from getting to the LED. Anyone have any ideas......because Iím out of ideas. My next line of thought is to cut the wire going to the ECMÖÖthis must be where the +5v is originating fromÖÖ.maybe a diode in this wire going to the ECM?
