Just read that HD discontinued the XR1200? Is it true? First Buell and now Buell bad copy?

Yes it is discontinued 2012 is the last year. I'm sad to see it go. Aside from the V-Rod. I really like the XR1200. I talked with the Owner of my local Harley shop and he said they didn't sell enough. Back this early spring someone had a orange XR1200 for $6500. It was tempting but I have a XB12S that can walk away from the XR1200. I liked the 2011 version that had the blacked out motor.

I really like the XR1200.

Why?

Other than the vague styling taken from the Harley xr750; I just don't see what's there to like...

I think this is the biggest issue for the XR. Why buy a bike that can not keep up with a 15 year old Buell? The bike suffers from all the issues Erik figured out decades ago. The real rub is it was on HD's dime.

Slight hijack, but I was telling a friend that I wanted to build a cafe Sporty and I acknowledged that it wouldn't do anything as well as my XB. He said why bother? The only reason I have now is just because I would enjoy the challenge.

This is a dangerous strategy! Pull off the assembly line bikes that are really good! In last weekend I went out for a ride with some friends here in Brazil, and we exchanged bikes halfway; really liked the 1200R. I have a XR in my garage next to the City without any problems!

That is odd. Terry Vance announced the continuation of the AMA XR race series for two more years when I was at indy GP. Maybe HD forgot to mention it to them!

Are they canceling the bike completely or only in the USA?

Performance bikes are not intended for HD's core customers. A shame considering the Vrod is the best twin power cruiser on the market even after a decade. That said if I was going to buy a Harley, it would not be a Vrod or XR1200. If I buy a Harley it will be an FLH of some kind. Even though those performance bikes would ride circles around an FLH, that is a bike HD exceeds at. A good road bike, with plenty of carrying capacity and comfort. If I want a performance bike, just about every other motorcycle manufacturer in the world does it better. Sucks for us Buellers that like our air cooled HD powered Buells. That is why I do not plan on getting rid of my M2. Close enough to a sportster I can find parts for, but still weighs 100lbs less than a Sportster.

Best power cruiser?
American made, absolutely.
I'd rather have the Ducati Diavel though.
Way more rideable where I like to ride.
IMHO of course

The Diavel is actually a pretty cool bike in it's class. I don't know how sales are going elsewhere, but my local shop has sold a bunch of these. It's a shame it isn't more reasonably priced, but they are right on target to compete with bikes like the V-Rod.

A friend has one. Once you get over the ugliness of the thing, it's actually a very nice ride. Sounds sweet, even with the stock exhaust. I'd have one, before I had a VRod, or VMax. It's very fast, lots of lowend torque, and handles way better than it looks!

So sorry, didn't mean to go off topic =P
The XR1200 is a great bike, for what it is.
I've ridden one, and as long as I don't ask it to do more than it can, it's very capable.
It's all a matter of what you want your bike to do.
H-D will probably just stick to what they know best, and stay away from the sportier side of biking.
Too bad too, they have it in them, it's just something gets lost between concept and showroom.

I don't really find the Diavel to be ugly. It certainly has some unique styling though. It takes some getting used to. Frankly I feel the same way about some points of my XB. I think both bikes were done very well though, just with some unique designs. I can see where some will look at either and not like what they see though.

I'm kind of curious how the Diavel can be set for touring. I don't know what's available to make that happen, but I could see it in that roll for myself.

The one I'm talking about is totally stock, even the caution stickers are still in place.
So, there's a lot of quick things you could do to clean it up a bit.
Rear fender needs attention, rear views need replacing, you know, the usual stuff.
I'd bet it'd do well as a touring bike, lots of "room" especially if you ride alone.
Bags and such, to me look like it'd be easier than bags on an XB, way easier.
Check out the Duc site, there are already soft bags and touring seat available, I'm sure the aftermarket will (if they don't already) have a lot more stuff.
Great bike, I'd love to have one.

Lets face it buell couldn't survive and they did everything better than an xr1200. More fuel range, more comfortable, more hp, lighter, better handling. My local dealer still had an 09 xr until 2 months ago I test rode it a couple of times and although it was a nice sportster I couldn't get past how much better my buell was in every way. However the xr must be doing well in Europe since they introduced it there iirc 2 years before the US got it and it has not been discontinued over there.

I remember that being said over and over after the family bought them back from AMF.
They may shrink, but like it or not H-D is part of Americana.
They have a huge following, and as unreal as it may sound, the younger riders are buying.

HD will cease to exist in 20 years.

This comment usually comes from someone with little to no experience in the motorcycles community. The fact is hd has the largest market share in the US by leaps and bounds. They also sell more bikes to people under the age of 30 than any other manufacturer in the US. Companies like hd don't just disappear and for the sake of everyone I hope it never does because that most likely would mean the economy in this country is completely destroyed.

I've always hoped that hd would rebadge the buell and reintroduce it. I do think there is room in the hd line up for a solid sport and adventure bike.

In the eyes of many riding a Harley is the easiest, quickest way to "cool" or "badass-ed-ness."
It's "The Life Style" you know, that's what sells Harleys.
This has been the case for probably the last 40 years.

Some research and fact checking would be in order. Some of these posts are absurdly inaccurate . . regardless of how you feel about Harley-Davidson.

Yes a sporty based Cafe would be cool for just ramming around town and if prices on used sporties were more reasonable I might be thinking of building one. But the prices locally are not at all reasonable, even for crashed and not running cycles, so I continue to look for a cheap Suzuki Savage (S40) to make a Cafe machine.

Too bad the V rod is on the chopping block, but I can see why it might not sell enough.

Yeah Glitch, the Diavel is a cool bike, but cruiser doesn't come to mind. I see it more of a hybrid than a true crusier. Its kinda like the Ulysses and Multistrada are not real dual sports, but this new Adventure Bike class. Ducati has really set its own path and I particularly like the way the Diavel looks.

That said, the Vrod has had little upgrades in regards to its performance aspects. Yeah the 1250cc version has improved power a bit, but basically it is more than a decade old and only two bikes Vmax and Diavel, which to me are not direct competitors, can out pace it. I see the M109R and VTX1800 as true power cruisers. Even though the M109R is a close competitor to the Vrod, even with a 1/3 advantage in engine size, the two bikes are dead even in a straight line and rod out handles it. The Honda was no player and think they had discontinued the bike.

I do not think Harley will be going anywhere any time soon. It will be a bit player world wide, but here in the US, it will own the large CC class for years to come. It kinda like the F150. The world best selling vehicle, but most of those sales are in the US. And like I stated above, I will continue to look at Harleys and may one day own one. As for air cooled, push-rod performance bikes from them, I believe we've seen the zenith.

The Vrod engine would be great in a host of different bikes.
It BAFFLES me why those H-D tools aren't trying to do ANYTHING with the engine.

Hell, imagine a full-boat touring sled with reliable 100hp (that didn't say GL1800 on it!)

The V-Rod motor lives in an impossible position.

It's not a 45 degree air cooled V-Twin, so any motorcycle with it isn't a "Real Harley" - explaining the V-Rod sales.

And, it doesn't actually make that much power (especially for how heavy it is), so it doesn't make for a terribly good motorcycle engine elsewhere. All that "visual mass" takes metal.

The V-Rod is a perfect example. It's a fast Harley, but it's not viewed as being a "real Harley" by many who want a Harley, and it's actually not a terribly good motorcycle compared to offerings like the Dieval. It's very heavy, and rather slow.
