You sure that tensioner is going to stand up very well?

I think Trojan did the same thing only they used a sprocket in place of a smooth surfaced wheel.

FP very nice, very very nice. Are you going to epoxy some kind of plastic slider to the bottom of the swingarm to protect from the chain bouncing against it?

YEs ... Dyna that wd. be the weakest link, Good Point. But then again if its off a diesel should be ok but what about the two bolt hold mounting system? YEs should have something there for the chain flex under the swingarm your right Wyckedflesh ..hmmm maybe a few but hopefully not alot of improvements needed..Looks good though I love playing with sprocket ratios ..

Looks nice, Fullpower - great job! Approximately how much did the entire conversion run you?

That does look good and all but how practical is it? You have alot of money tied up in that set up, and that is a 12, so you had the heavy duty belt to begin with. Kind of hard to beat the "no lash belts".

I don't remember who it was, but someone (who races XB's) questioned why someone would want to convert an XB to chain unless they were going to race.

He broke one late at night 400? miles from home and has zero tolerance for motorcycles that will not move forward when the engine is running. : ) He has corrected this situation. Hope it works well, Dean.

Chiming in late here on the chain conversion (hope the points weren't made earlier and I missed them) but... - I think you are going to have to fit a block into the idler arm slot to prevent it loosening.

Based on what I read elsewhere, you can't torque the bolts enough to prevent the arm from gradually moving - allowing the chain to loosen. No biggie really, it is just a chunk of metal that closes the open section of the slot - coming to bear against the bolt.

I ended up buying the Hal's conversion but did really look closely at a do-it-yourself - especially after seeing what Matt Purdy published about their Trojan Horse racebike in England.

I'd be curious to hear how your idler arm holds up after a few hundred miles - whether it stays put.

I was thinking of keeping the idler pinned in place and then just adjust tension by changing chain length and diameter/number of teeth on the idler roller.

Still taking notes - I may be building a second track bike.

Excellent Dean. I too think a block on that upper hole in the tensioner would be a good idea. I would also make a slightly larger one so when the chain stretches you'll still have one that fits. Would it be a good idea to use a chain with one or two less links? Maybe you could then use a skate board wheel. They last a long time.

Glad you finally took care of it : ).

If that is the idler pulley I am thinking it is, its made from the same material as the skateboard wheels that keep getting mentioned.

sure Dean, post all those pics, then just leave us hanging for a day.... I too am curious. I like the idea behind the belt, but live in the land of gravel (colorado) and considering after pricing of all your parts isn't that much more than a new belt, I might just go that route if I find the pros outweigh the cons for my tastes. Let us know what your new experience is like.

Re: idler arm (not necessarily yours, Full), how about making the upper bolt the pivot and the lower one slotted for adjustment? The lever arm would be shorter and less prone to movement, maybe?

It looks to me like the lower hole doesn't have enough material around it to be used as the slot.

Didn't mean Full's, I meant for anyone else fabricating such an idler.

That is a stock bracket he is using with the metal pully changed out for the pulley from a diesel. That is all the room that is avalable unless you fabricate a new bracket.

b-kowski, and wycked, yes one could add some material to the forward/lower idler wheel mounting arm, allowing an adjustment slot, and also a threaded adjustment fastener. that may well be a better solution. for my first trial i used materials on hand. initial impression is very good, drive is quiet, no vibration noted. bike is substantially easier to push around on flat surfaces, no audible "groaning" as we hear with belt drive. my 50:21 gearing is within 1% of stock (65:27) and yet i am having a much greater abundance of torque. front wheel coming up at full throttle in second gear. i think the chain may have a somewhat lower frictional loss.
seems to be behaving itself so far. i need to fasten a strip of pvc or uhmw to the swingarm for a chain slider.

Just out of curiosity, what were the conditions when the previous belts broke? How many were there?

Thanks,
Mike

Fullpower, are you sure about that 1% claim? You can't just count teeth, since you're not comparing the same two items. I'd think you would need to look at the diameter of each sprocket relative to one another. Couldn't you have a lower gearing now even though your tooth count is roughly the same ratio - explaining your newfound addition of torque?
