My 07 XB9R Swing Arm/Oil Tank seems to be leaking oil from the weld , on the inside seam , in front of the tire . Has anyone seen this or heard of this before ? @#$%! | ||

Not from just riding. The only broken/leaking swingarm I've seen was from a wrecked XB9R. Got any pictures? | ||

I have seen it before. It happened in 2008 on a 2007 XB12X and Buell covered it under warranty. Never heard of it happening on another bike though. Interesting! I bet you could have it welded back up, or you will have to buy a new swingarm  | ||

What shocks me is my bike is an 07 with only 3700 miles on it , and I have not ridden it that hard . But sure enough , it is leaking oil right on the weld seam . I could not figure out where this oil leak was coming from , I thought it was some how coming from my catch can breather until I looked under the swing arm . Which brings me to a few questions for those who know- Are new 07 swing arms still available from HD ? A guess on price ? What about swapping to a 07XB-SS swing arm ? Are the oil lines the same connection on the 07SS swing arm ? What is involved with swapping to an XB-SS swing arm ? New Belt ? Shock ?  | ||

Are new 07 swing arms still available from HD ? It's possible, a call to a dealership would say for sure. A guess on price ? More than you're prepared to pay I'd reckon. I'd look in the classifieds for someone parting out a bike, next stop e-bay. What about swapping to a 07XB-SS swing arm ? It's been done. Are the oil lines the same connection on the 07SS swing arm ? I don't think so, but it'd be a simple fix since you'd have the bike apart. What is involved with swapping to an XB-SS swing arm ? New Belt ? Shock ? It's been done, hopefully someone that's done it will chime in. | ||

Here ya go! Mine is an 05 frame, with an sTT swing arm. Your oil lines will be the same if you use an 06-07 swing arm. You will also need a Uly/SS/sTT belt. I needed to refab my lower shock mount. I'm not sure if the shock mount on your 07 frame is the same as the SS frame. If it isn't you will need to weld the lower shock mount like I did, or machine a bracket.  | ||

Is there a sealer inside the swing arm like there is inside the frame? That would be the only issue with welding the swingarm, otherwise I would definitely have it ground down and welded. | ||

Yeah , I am worried about getting it welded . It could become brittle , I have heard , if the welder does not know what he is doing . And , it is very thin . I will probably end up buying a new one , so I'm not worrying about it when I'm leaned over in some corner . They run about $450 and you can still get them .  | ||

OK, assuming the original weld is structurally strong but with a couple of pin holes in it.... Would it make sense to drain and wash the inside, then pour in a fuel tank liner kit? These kits are made to seal pinholes and other rust damage in fuel tanks so wouldn't work just as well for oil tanks? It would be a $60 test before you spend the extra on a swingarm. | ||

There are a few different types of sealers on the market, some rubber based and some epoxy based... I can't see the epoxy based versions be harmed by the heat but I'm not an expert with these sealers. Might be worthwhile to email a few of the manufacturers and ask about this. I think this is also a way to save damaged frames when they get a hole in them from grinding down the pavement. It's a theory that I hope to never need to put into practice. | ||

Looks like $37 plus whatever shipping will cost. Maybe get the stripper chemical to make sure there is nothing else in the swingarm. They do say it is good for oil tanks so it should work fine for your needs. You may want to consider new bearings while you have it apart, this is one thing I'll need to go back and deal with later this summer. | ||

I would use "Qiucksteel".....I have A CRF 450R. On my first outing with it a rock came up and smacked the crankcase.It was cracked enough to leak,its been that way for 8 years no leaks. roughen up the area with a good steel brush or sandpaper etc and it will prob hold fine...Unless its a structural failure and it might get worse. my 2 cents good luck! | ||

Good price on that used swingarm. If that's not available, or you don't want a black one I've got a XB9 (gray) swingarm I started stripping for polishing. It's in a halfway state (partially stripped) right now since I got distracted by other things. I got it from the dealership take-off parts sale, it was scuffed on the side. For $70 and shipping I could get what I put into it as is. I think Al sells frame paint and you could just spray some gray on there yourself.... or maybe do the texture black to match your primary cover. Or I can finish stripping it if you'd like a polished swingarm I can probably work on finishing it starting this weekend, I gotta take it easy for a few days since I spent a couple days in the shop with a faulty appendix, could probably do $150 or so polished. Let me know if it would be any use to you. | ||
