My bike has been backfiring a lot when in high revs,usually when downshifting. Happened after installing the Jardine exhaust.

I thought it might go away after having the race ECM installed and the TPS reset. But after I got it back from the dealer it was still doing it. It also sputters at 4000 RPM. I called Jardine and they said I had an exhaust leak somewhere but I couldnt find one the dealer says he couldnt either. Anyone else had this issue? How long does it take the ECM learn the pipe?

Any suggestions other than getting rid of the Jardine pipe I just paid $250 for?

Try riding for about 5 miles at a steady 70MPH. It should let the ECM re-learn and smooth it out.

Ride the bike at 3500 rpms (constant) for 10 minutes. This should allow the bike to relearn the exhaust and get used to it.

The backfiring you are describing is pretty much normal from my experience and what I have read. I know my D&D had it as well. My Drummer has it somewhat, but not nearly as much (Drummer was the first time I did the 3500rpm's for 10 minute thing).

I had to get up early on a Saturday morning so I could get on the freeway and have the opportunity to do that test run.

I have a Drummer on my S and it still backfires and pops under hard decel (engine braking).

It has days where it will do it and some days it doesn't. Do the 3500 RPM ride and it should clear up if it is excessive.

JO,

I have the Jardine exhaust also (I think that any exhaust would do this...my truck does) It is simply caused by the high flow of exhaust at almost to wide open throttle and then closing the throttle...causes a disturbance in the wave flow between intake and combustion cycles and the exhaust pulses...No harm, no foul...just have to learn to live with it.

I also have the Jardine exhaust on my XB9. If Jardine's techs are telling you to check for a leak, you might want to check the "s" pipe that connects the collector of your header to the can. I noticed a small leak at one of the expansion notches when I installed mine. I switched the clamp Jardine supplied with the OEM clamp. Then rotated the clamp around until the small leak was sealed. BTW, how do you like the pipe? What is your experience with power loss/gain? I am satisfied for now. But I believe I will need to go another direction once more mods are made. - GMAN

thats kinda normal for all the pipes on the buells. its not really any thing to worry about but yes make sure you ride it at about 38800 rpm steady for 5 to 10 miles to let the ecm learn it well

The decel popping didnt bother me as much as the sputtering right between 3800 & 4000(almost like the bike was about to stall). I will try the ECM calibration (is it 3500 or 3800 RPM?) suggested by several of you and see if it helps. Im not sure how much I like the pipe yet. It pulls really hard after 4K but up til then it doesnt do much. I'll let you know after I get it sorted.

Not trying to start an uproar or anything, but someone recently installed a Jardine and said it was a piece of crap. Don't remember who, but for $250 it makes ya wonder.

I have the backfiring, poping thing on my 03 XB9SL with the D&D. It did it with the Buell race muffler also. I just write it off as "normal" with an aftermarket exhaust.

Well I did find an exhaust leak. It seems that one of the rivets holding the muffler together was missing and it was leaking from that hole. I replaced the rivet, did the 10 minute at 3500 RPM ride and it seems to have fixed most my problems. It still seems lean to me and likes to be warmed up a lot before riding. Once she is nice and warm it pulls really hard and revs up fast. Now I have another problem, the fuse for the lights keeps blowing every time I switch the Hi-Beams on.
