My 08XT bucked quite a bit at off idle to around 2800 rpm. Silky smooth above 2800 rpm. The comfort kit reflash reduced it some. I also believe that the 8.5mm magnecore plug wires and NGK Iridium plugs improved it as well. Currently I am running a Erik Buell Racing ECM for stock setup and have a K&N airfilter. The low RPM surging is now almost gone. Fortunately, I never have had the constant speed surging some identify.

The big Thunderstorm motors just do not like low RPM.

My Uly's sure does. I can cruise in high gear at 40 mph, 2,000 rpm, just fine, nice and smooth.

The Cyclone, not so much, need to be at least 55 mph, 2,700 rpm.

FYI. All of my symptoms are at under 40 mph. 1st and second gear.

At Start up the E*B*R ecm is making my bike idle really high. 1500-3000rpm's and it bounces back and forth between the low and high.

anyone else?

Mine goes up to 1500-2k rpm, stays there for a bit then starts to come back down. On its way down it'll sometimes flutter a bit between about 1100-1500, then before long it settles into a steady 1050ish.

3k rpms sounds awfully high.

You might want to try re-setting the TPS and letting it idle for 10 min again and see if that sorts it out.

I would say that the surging in Motorbike's bike is exactly the same as mine.
Here's what I've done so far to try to fix it to no avail.

Breather reroute - no difference
New plugs - no difference
New O2 sensor - no difference
New TPS- no difference
New stock ECM - no difference
E-B-R ECM - no difference
Tuned and re-mapped with Tunerpro. - no difference
Hawk pipe / stock pipe - no difference

Still surging. The only things I haven't changed are the IAC and the ambient temp sensor. They are up next I suppose.

Geez Adam! All that for ...

quote:

My surging is only noticeable at steady throttle between 2500 and 3500 RPM but is not very bad. I usually have to think about it and see if I am imagining it or not. Very faint. It just feels like it is running just ever so slightly lean. If I give it just a little throttle, it responds perfectly. If ridden hard through curves and hills, it runs flawlessly and is the most fun bike I have ever owned. I wish I could get a job riding a bike like this for a living!

Why bother?

Mine is not faint and it does not inspire confidence especially when going around corners. It's more of a personal mission to make the bike run right. I also think it affects my gas mileage quite a bit.

how 'bout your intake gaskets?

the surging on my XB is terrible. I've replaced everything in my induction system except the metal for the throttle body. the ecm seemed to help after the third reflash, but has settled back into the surging at steady to slightly accelerating throttle positions...

the consensus seems to be adding a bit more fuel (3-5%)in the low tps areas cures the surging problem.

It could be the intake gaskets, those things cause some serious headaches. I replaced mine with Jim's Gaskets and used Hylomar on it. No more leaks.

Something else, have you done anything to the engine say, the base gaskets changed out with Cometic ones? This goes for the head gaskets as well.

Andy

This is just a wild guess, might help, might not, but I'd try it since it's too easy not too.

Try resetting your TPS again, but when you close the throttle each time, apply a consistently fair amount of torque while holding it closed, significantly more than you normally would.

Are you familiar with the precise method for resetting TPS on your 2008 XBike?

If not...

For 2008 and later Buell twins TPS reset is built-in and very simple.

Buell TPS Reset/Rezero Procedure for 2008 & later Buell XBikes and 1125R/CR motorcycles:

The Buell TPS reset for 2008, 2009, or 2010 Buell twins is simple but requires that you precisely perform the following procedure, step-by-step, exactly as described:

0. Begin with the the ignition off, key out, and the run/stop switch in the "stop/off" position.

1. Switch the Run/Stop switch to the "Run" position.

2. Insert ingition key and turn it to the "on" position. Do not start or turn over the engine.

3. Rotate the throttle grip from the closed throttle position to the wide open throttle position and hold it there for one second, then snap the throttle back to the closed position and hold for one second. Repeat that exact throttle action two more times (three total open/hold - closed/hold cycles) holding the throttle grip gently against each stop for one full second.

4. Cycle the key off and back on.

You've just completed a TPS reset for your 2008 or later Buell motorcycle. Start your bike and ride. : )

Well after three phone messages, three emails and a weeks time I finally heard back from Erik Buell Racing. They state that the lack of power is due to not having the exhaust valve functioning. Really? The bike's run great for the last 7k with no valve in the exhaust! Put in the new ECM and it's got no low end but it's because of the lack of exhaust valve? They didn't even offer to reflash it, only to allow me to return it. I'm wondering if now my only choice is to pony-up the additional $450 for the programmable ECM or are there other options?

Sorry to hear that Jim. So the bike ran well with the hawk muffler? The hawk doesn't use the exhaust valve? Will you send it back and just keep it like you had it. Why spend money on the programmable ECM?

That's a bummer : ( Talk to the hawk guy (randy?) - he's done some work on mapping and may have some ideas or even be able to remap your stock ecm.

The bike ran fine with the Hawk. I found it to have no lack of power and never noticed a difference in the seat-of-the-pants torque feel. I just figured the race ECM would cure the de-acceleration popping (it did) and slightly richen up the midrange.

The plugs have always looked good but like any stock bike its most likely lean across the board to meet emissions.

I have always been concerned with it running too lean at high rpm with the stock ECM and the open exhaust and K&N filter.

If I don't get the programmable ECM or find another way to alter it I'll probably just put it back to stock, much as I hate to.

Not sure if the 2008/2009 ECM's can be fooled with but I'll call Randy and ask.

Jim

You can modify a stock 2008/09 ECM just like you can the older ones. You just can't use ECMspy from what I understand. Here is a link to a thread on how to do it. I can't tell you it works but it sounds like it is worth a try for you.
http://www.buellxb.com/Buell-XB-Forum/Do-It-Yourse lf-Buell-Mods/Flashing-a-Race-Map-to-ALL-Buells-08 -too

For my 09 XB12R I'll be getting a Erik Buell Racing ECM when I get my Drummer next spring. I am sorry you had poor results but I wouldn't give up on Erik Buell Racing either.

You can also check out htis guy, he can tune your ECM for you. I have no experiance with him just found his web site.

I use TunerPro and ECMRead to burn/fetch bins to the ECM on my '08. The E-B-R ECM causes a high and unstable idle because of the timing tables. You can edit these yourself at low RPMs (smooth them out) and the bike will idle more consistently. Bucking can be addressed with 3 things. The E-B-R fuel maps are a great starting point. If the engine still bucks at cruise, adjust the Front Cylinder Correction table and fatten it up at higher cylinder head temperatures. I only increased mine by 2% at 170* and it cured my bucking. Finally, the O2 min/max voltage switching range is wider in the E-B-R ECM. Widening the range to the E-B-R spec and performing the above mods should result in a smooth idling and cruising bike. Good luck.

Mesozoic, Are you altering the stock or a E-B-R racing ecm?

I actually liked the cold idle portion of it, about 1,800 to 2,000 rpm and very smooth compared to the cold 1,000 rpm death rattle it usually has.

Sounds like it's $318 I could have better spent elsewhere, or, whats the thought on the programmable one? It is pricey though!

Modifying stock ECM hardware. Using a very custom tune that is derived from the research of many other calibrations, though. I don't see the disadvantage or difference between the E-B-R programmable ECM and the stock ECM, though. Does the E-B-R unit provide you a cable and some software? The physical hardware is probably identical. Perhaps it allows you to flash different firmware to it, which is not easy to do with the stock hardware unless you're a Buell tech.

@Mesozoic. I'm interested in the range you are referring to for the O2 min/max volatage. Do you know the exact numbers as I don't have an E-B-R ecm? I will try changing the front cylindar correction table too.

The O2 sensor lean voltage is set to 0.317V and the rich voltage is 0.659V. The stock voltages are narrower and it makes for a herky jerk ride.

The Front Cylinder Correction table is set to 102% @ 240*C and 100% @ 170*C. I made them 104% and 102% respectively... and the bike runs a lot smoother during cruise.

The TunerPro stuff is actually free. You can download it from http://www.tunerpro.net/downloadApp.htm and the latest version even supports Buell tuning right out of the box. It's good software so it makes sense to donate at some stage, once you've made some progress. ECMRead for Mono is also freely available, so if you've got tuning needs don't let anything stop you.

Meso Shoot me an email I have a new file for you... I may forget before I get home.

I never did convert the blender program to VB2010 from the C++... I may get to it sooner or later. A few guys have asked about it. mostly I just do the blend for them so they dont mess it up since it's possible to do. So far It's 100%. knock on wood...

Glad you Guys all Like the TunerPro stuff. Way back I was Told it would never work and Caught crap at a few sites about it.
Well, as many see it works and Is the best thing going. IMO. It will do every ecm depending on which .dll plug-in file you get access to for the Race and Pro race ecms. As for the adx it also will do every ecm, even the new Bike if you want and future bikes until they co can bus or k-line. Even then it's a simple code to set up. cause its just simple binary in 8 or 16 bytes. The only way to make it hard is rolling code...

Awesome to hear that we can still work on the '08+ ECM programming this way.

Do you know if I could adjust the fan logic in my E B R ECM myself or would I have to send it back to E B R? I like the way the bike runs, but I find it really annoying to have the fan running all the time and just can't see the point in it when it is cold and raining - surely the motor isn't running hot when it is 40 F, raining and I'm just tooling along at the speedlimit...

You can definitely adjust the fan logic yourself with whatever ECM you have. I would start with downloading Tunerpro, then the XDF file for your specific calibration (BUE1D, BUE2D, or whatever it is). Also download ECMRead for Mono. You'll need a USB to Buell ECM cable to make things talk. The latest drivers for the FTDI chip (the thing that is responsible for converting RS232 to USB) are available on their website. With ECMRead you can "Fetch" your bin and view it in TunerPro. Do your research and modify the tune in Tunerpro. When you're finished you can "Burn" it back into the ECM using ECMRead again.

Awesome, thanks! I'll have some research, downloading and cable-buying to do this weekend : D

If its any help my laptop (Lenovo X61S) has an RS232 connector I think - I'm pretty sure my desktop does too (asus p5k delux mobo).

Any recommendations on where and which USB to Buell ECM cable to buy?

You can use your RS232 port if you want to build your own cable, but I went for the pre-made USB. Looks like the price has gone up: http://www.deutschconnector.com/products/wiring_ha rness/special_wiring_harness/buell_interface_cable .html
