The HD service could not diagnose the fuel pump fuse popping problem. I am going to install a new pump myself.

Anyone know if 2010 fuel pump (P0130.7AA) for XB for fit 2009?
Part number for 2009 fuel pump is P0130.5AA

Pumps are interchangeable. Even the XBRR pump (except the HP regulator)

From what I have been reading on these forums, is that the wiring on the fuel pump unit moves around too much. The fix has been to pull the pump unit, and install plastic zip ties to hold the wires in and keep them from rubbing against any metal.

One photo showed that the wires were rubbing.

I have read that the 2008, 2009 XB pump units are different than the 2010.

But if you are going to install a new unit, would you sell me your old one??? I need some parts off of it.

If it alone is a bad fuel pump motor, then you can just replace the motor.

Replace the motor with this one: fuel pump for a 2003 Mustang V6, part number E2366 at Autozone XB fuel pumps are made by Walbro and are model #521.

Walbro 255L is another one that I found (http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show .cgi?tpc=32777&post=2062460#POST2062460)

Replace the fuel filter, sock and o-rings as well.

Have you noticed if your fuse pops when you have a lower level of fuel in the bike or is it at random? Also does it happen when starting the bike or in the middle of riding?

In 2008 the electrical connector changed on the fuel pump wire harness.

In all three instances (2 from previous owner) occurred on a hot day in traffic. On the last occurrence, it was low on fuel, fuel light came on after less than 5 miles after the fuse blew. I didn't ask about the fuel level on the other two occasions.

When the bike is sitting idle in traffic, with no fan on, the temp goes up. When I went to pull the blown fuse, the whole fuse box was hot.

I was asking because I had my fuse blow a few times, all with low fuel light on and when I was starting the bike while still warm from the last ride. Now when I see the fuel light come on, I go and fill up asap. After starting to do this, I haven't blown another one. Maybe this will work for you?

HD finally replaced the fuel pump on my XB9SX['09] a year ago and I have no problems since. All my blown fuses were after 120 mi on the trip meter and on hot days.

That is an EXCELLENT piece of info. We should have a permanent running thread with cross-over part numbers like this for when HD quits Buell support altogether. I know the relays interchange with late model Ford units; anybody got another other cross-overs?

I just repaired the fuel pump in my son's '06 XB9, I took my time and did it in about 3 hours start to finish, I replaced the two filters, the o-rings, the low level sensor and covered the three chafed wires with shrink tubing.

I pulled off the rear wheel, unbolted the rear shock, lowered the swingarm and was able to get the pump out gently prying it out with a couple of screwdrivers. draining the gas was the worst/longest part.

$100 (aftermarket) vs. $300 (OEM) is pretty substantial.

I did some more research and found that the Airtex E2386 fuel pump motor is probably a better fit, high flow rate. It can be found on ebay (buy it now) for $35 shipped. Also the large canister fuel filter is FF3330 at Autozone.

Since I have the 2004 fuel pump assembly I need to do the "fuel pump mod" to make it operate like the newer 2006+ models.

The fuel pump motor can not be purchased OEM, that I am aware of. There is no part number for it. You can however buy all the parts that surround it on the fuel pump.

I had the wire chaffing problem. Popping fuses every once in a while till it popped one day and all replacements popped. Narrowed it down with a voltmeter to the fuel pump hot wire. Did the unbolt shock thing, left the tire on. wiggled it out and fixed the exposed wires and covered the assy with zippies and shrink wrap. Its been fine the past 5 months/3,000 miles, 32,000 miles total on bike.

I haven't taken mine out yet to inspect. But if it is the chaffing problem, why does the fuse pop when it's hot (and fuel is running low)?

My assessment is that when the fuel pump motor gets hot, more current is needed to run the pump, causing the fuse to pop. In traffic (going slower than 15mph) the fans don't run, elevating the temperature. The fuel pump may not be able to handle the heat - thus the change in the fuel pump design for 2010.

I rather have the fan come on when standing still and shut off when moving.

BTW, 2010 fuel pump might not fit 2009 bikes. HD Service Center is checking out whether 2010 fuel pump would fit 2009 bikes. Surdyke parts department did not think it would fit.

The wire chaffing was an issue on mostly 05 and 06 bikes. The fuse popping issue on the 09 is different.

The 2010 fuel pump uses PWM for pressure control instead of the bleed-off mechanical regulator. I haven't had one in my hands to see what the internal differences are (i.e., actual pump motor, surrounding guts), but the man himself told me that it can't be swapped into the earlier bikes. I think the pressure is under ECM control.

OK here is the skinny on 2010 Fuel Pump directly from the HD Service division.

2010 fuel pump will work/fit 2008-2009 XB, but its fuel regulator must be replaced with 08/09 fuel pump regulator. According to HD tech, the fuel pressure for 2010 runs too high for 08/09 Xbs. By replacing the fuel regulator to 08/09, it will provide the correct pressure.

The 2010 has a pressure sensor on the fuel rail- the sensor apparently provides a signal to the ECM which is used to control the fuel pump to regulate the pressure.

I saw a "parts built" XB12S a couple of weekends ago that had a 2003 frame with a 2009 engine with 2010 electronics. He had brazed a fitting onto the 2009 fuel rail to accommodate the 2010 fuel pressure sensor, but he was still getting an occasional CEL. Talking about it, we figured the fuel pump he used (not sure which year it was, but it wasn't a 2010) was unable to provide the requested pressure under certain conditions resulting in the CEL. IIRC, he had a 2010 pump on order and was going to replace it.
