This is sort of a continuation from my earlier post. My muffler fell off, blah, blah, blah. It's no longer an emergency. I decided to stay the night and rented a truck to take my bike home tomorrow.

The question now is what to get to replace my race muffler. I know everyone loves the Drummer, but the way my bike sounds now without a muffler...Let's just say my shorts are a bit sticky from the little bit I got to ride it. It sounds awesome!

So, my real question is can I run my bike with a straight pipe? What are the pros and cons? I know from the earlier advice I got that I shouldn't run it with just the stock header pipes. My buddy does exhaust system of cars, so I can have him make me whatever I need. I really need to know if I can do something to run straight pipes, either tuning or building, and not worry about damaging anything.

I'm having a set made right now as well. It'll be a mandrel bend after the header (2" dia) that splits into two just after that. I'm going to use 2" pipes and will probably baffle them a little. I'm only going for the sound ATM and will be getting a Drummer as well.

Last week,when the muffler packing all burned out of my kerker,had virtually straight pipes for a day,not bad really,only noisey when hard on it.Repacked and all better now,still louder than everyone else's,I don't mind.Along those lines,when the straps,(hose clamps),broke off my home made pipe,had to ride it home without any muffler,it worked ok,but broke the front stud on the header flange,no big prob,fixed with new stainless nuts,etc.

i would like to know more on this subject also. I dont need the power that the race kit or the drummer provide, I have my zx6r for speed i use my buell because i like the sound of the v twin. Any one have any good diagrams of a straight pipes dim. and such and i was thinking about using a volkswagon exhaust baffle. Also will running the straight pipes burn up the valves because of back presure.
If anyone has any good diagrams please send them to my email.

Well anyone have the dimensions for a straight pipe yet? I really don't wanna have to measure mine I am so lazy. I just want to go have one bent to the correct specs and then I will install it.

one more, these are the latest versions. I have tried a single pipe that exited to the left and it sounded great, but I like the looks of these better and they sound just as good. I have more ideas for the exits when I return from this Iraq tour. YOU GOTTA OVERBUILD THE MOUNTS OR THEY WILL NEVER HOLD UP!!!

Hey Bigsherm9r I was wondering what are the dimensions on the pipe you have coming from the headers and then going into the exhaust. Did you just bend a regular piece of exhaust pipe and bend it? If so do you know what kind of angles you bended it at? I notice it looks like you bent it then cut it and welded it back. I appreciate any help you can give me with going to straight pipes. I am planning on running that L piece into a 3.5" stainless pipe I have laying around and seeing what happens. Hopefully it is big enough that the regular mounting system will still work and it is heavy enough for me to jack the bike up by if need be.

I can't recall the exact dimensions right now, I'm in IRAQ!!! In Mid-Texas where I live, it's hard to find mandrel-bent pieces for the smooth bends, and I had to create from the slim selection I found at an import car tuner's place. The downpipe is the same diameter as the collector, I took it to a muffler shop to get it stretched on the end. I think the rest is 2&1/2"... sh*t, I can't remember.

The reason for the welds at the mounts is the restrictors that are inside- imagine a connecting rod shape with the small end being the mount to the stock hole in the engine case, and the big end inside the pipe with a hole the size of each header pipe (I think 1&1/2"?).

The system is just plain old mild steel, polished with sandpaper and spraybombed with clear high-temp form the parts store. The mounting springs are from Lowe's hardware(stainless and cheap) and the spring anchor points are just stainless washers cut in half and spot-welded on.

If you're not in a terrible hurry, the ultimate would be to order some of magnumforceracing.com 's selection of stainless mandrel bends, and get someone to weld it in stainless and polish the whole thing. They can bend whatever diameter as close together as you like for the U-shape. If you want to use the stock mounting straps, get them to bend it to fit in there, but remember the bulge of the bottom of the muffler took up a lot of slack on the straps. If you make your own mounts, YOU GOTTA OVERBUILD THEM MORE THAN YOU THINK OR THEY WON'T LAST!!! I can't overemphasize that point. My mounts are 1/4" steel, and I think they might last- I had a few thousand miles on 'em when I left.

I only get to check internet every few days, but I'll be happy to help all I can. When I get home next spring, I'll probably do another version with huge trumpet ends like the MotoGP's, and in stainless, and maybe make some for sale. We'll see.
