The manual says to check the XB's oil while hot. Does that mean running? On the sidestand? Held level? Just after I shut it off on the sidestand?

Could someone please clarify?

Per the service manual: Ride motorcycle for approx. 10 minutes to ensure the oil is hot and the engine is at normal operating temp. The motorcycle must be on level ground, on the sidestand, with the engine off.......

i came across a little problem following the manual
the swingarm is at an angle
a BAD angle
i think it leaves about half a quart of used oil in there
cuz i changed my oil n then had to change it the next day
and it was all black n funky after only 24 hours of riding

did you actually measure how much you got out compared with how much you put in?

no it was after the dealer changed my oil
then i noticed the stripped primary plug
so i changed that out n it had water in it AGAIN
so i figured id check the oil
n it was all black after only 24 hours

I don't want to say your dealer DIDN'T change your oil and stuff, but your description of the events in the couple of threads you have mentioned it lends me to beleive there was a mistake made. I have seen cars come in the next day with black oil, but that tends to be cars with 50k or better on the clock and the fresh oil is pulling the sludge off the inside of the block...but I know mine stays clean for quite awhile, I can actually see the difference when I clean the dipstick when I check the oil, you know see it darkening with use.

really wouldnt suprise me if they didnt
they stripped the primary case plug
they didnt tighten all the fairing bolts n i ended up losing one
they didnt inspect the plugs
they didnt road test it
n im starting to think they didnt reset the tps right
damn canadians

They screwed you! (whose surprised, its an HD dealer right?)

ALWAYS change your own oil. Only way to know what is in the engine. With Mobil 1 of course!!

When you drain the oil, it helps to have an XB on a swingarm stand (or at least upright), on level ground to get the maximum used oil out. If it's on the sidestand, some oil gets left in there. I let mine drain while on the swingarm stand, then lower it to the floor and let it drain some more, then I bounce it up and down (just in case).

On a side note: What is up with the XB's horrible, black, plastic dipstick??? My lawnmower has a black plastic dipstick, but it actually works because it is a smooth cylinder with grooves in it for the high/low marks. On the other hand, with the XB: A) It's very tough to tell if the dipstick is wiped completely dry, #2) It's tough to get a good reading between those H/L marks, especially in low light, and III) Those two rings (H/L marks) always get hung up on the threads of the oil fill tube when you pull it out or stick it back in! Who are the geniuses who designed this thing? It might work if they made the stick portion a white or gray color.....

Whoa,.......typing this just gave me a great idea to fix this little problem.

Oil Black????
After 4000km of use the oil in my scooter was still golden and only slightly darker than the new stuff. Trans fluid......I'm a little confused as to where all the water is getting in.
