primary cover is leaking AGAIN
even after putttin an oversized self tapping plug in it
WHAT CAN I DO besiiides replace whole primary cover

put some gastape ?? (telfontape ) on the plug..

the original plug has a rubber ring for sealing
as you have a oversized one, you need some other sealing material.
( i don't know how you call that stuff in the states, but it's the white tape plummer's use for screw joints )

i tryed that before i replaced it with the oversised one
when i took the original plug out there was threads all over the magnetic tip so the threads in the actual case are aboot shot
i still got the tape so ill try that n hope for the best
if not ill try heli coils
n if all else fails i guess ill call in the warranty folks i spoze that IS what its ther for

Tap it properly (with a tap, not a self tapping bolt) and put in a new (non self tapping) bolt with a rubber washer / gasket. Epoxy a magnet to the end of it with an oil resistant adhesive (I would probably use JB Weld) if you wish, probably not a bad idea.

Make sure you flush out all the metal pieces that are going to get in there from doing the tapping.

Why don`t you take it back to the Dealer that it up in the first place, and fix it right.

Whatever that takes (new plug or Primary case)
Its a new bike under warranty, not some old fixer-upper.

im lazy n its AT LEAST 150 miles into canada to the dealer
it seems to have just loosend a little i gave it another turn n ahalf n it seems to have stopped leaking

the throttle has about 1/4 inch of play
the brakes squeak
the clutch spits clutch oil onto the inside of my fairing
meh all little piddly

Are you certain the drip is coming from the drain plug? I've had a drip that appears on the plug, but on close inspection, I can see that it comes from on top of the case... probably stator grommet. The plug is just the low point that the drip eventually finds. Run your finger along the back of the case and up (getting excited yet?? lol)and see if you come away with oil on it.

na its the whole in the case itself were the plug goes
when me and my freind first took the plug out to check it almost all the threads from the primary cover came with it
we tapped the hole with new threads n put threadlocker tape on it but it still leaked so i bought a oversized self tapping plug and put that in
now i just gotta tighten it every few days
like i said piddly little harley crap no big deal

My XB is neither a "real" Harley nor a pretend Harley. It's a Buell!!

its just oil/grease from the clutch line
its on the INSIDE of the fairing
just like spray from slappin the clutch hard i guess

Just for the record...

'96 Road Pig

The Road Pig from Texas pictured above has about 67,000 miles on the original motor. Total repairs to date (excluding crash repairs and normal expendable items like brake pads, tires, etc) amounts to a clutch pack and two brake rotors.

It neither leaks, squeaks, nor spits oil, and it most assuredly IS a Harley.

r-t just pointing out the fallacy in generalizations...

That would be a bad guess. Something else is wrong.

And if the threads came out with the drain plug, you won't fix the case by retapping the same size, there is nothing left to tap. Get a helicoil (or similar thread repair kit), which requires you tap in a bigger hole, and insert the stainless replacement thread coil.

*Whimper*... its hard to watch a perfectly good firebolt being put on a death march... *Whimper*. The poor little thing...

Yeah... We can help though.

I don't know how but we can. I mean no offense 420, but we haven't really heard of these Firebolts having any trouble. A couple little things here and there but for the most part nothing. It has to be some other part of the equation. I still say you get another primary cover especially if your oversize drain bolt still leaks. They are $225 new as I recall but I think I saw a couple on Ebay the other day for $25. After that, I don't see how you could get oil on your fairing from the clutch. There's no fluid up there other than the front brake reservoir. Maybe you put too much oil in your primary on the pressure is forcing oil up the cable?

For both cases, I think it's something that is not an inherent HD or Buell design flaw. It's something else.

On my Cyclone, Isn't the drain bolt on the case, not the cover? Did it move on the XB's?

I ran my finger down there, as Smadd suggested, and the drain plug IS located on the cover. Take the bike back to those that screwed it up or post the cash for a new cover. Simply adjust the excess slack out of you throttle cable with the barrel adjuster on the cable. No biggie.

Definitely on the cover. I'm thinking that the dealership didn't strip it. If they did, take it back to them.

did that to the throttle n it feels 100% better
and it ABSOLUTELY was the dealer who stripped it
it was also the dealer who didnt tighten up the fairing bolts causing one to fall out
and it was also the dealer who DIDNT road test it after my 5000 mile service that took 4 hours
got done right at closing time n they all split leaving just me my bill and the guy givin me the bill there
point is i havent had a good experience with a dealer yet
either the one i bought it from (300miles away)
or the one that did my service (150 miles away into canada)
so im just gonna do everything i can my self n rely on the all knowing badwebb for the rest
