You know , I like the dual spread setup , but the problem with that design is its very similar to the D&D pipe , and if you look at the American Sportbike Exhaust shootout , where it was tested against other exhausts on XB12/9's , it was the worst performing exhaust out of the group . So I am a little unsure of that design on a XB . And the single Oval is a little boring , thats why I liked the reverse muffler design because you add length to the exhaust .

On the other hand , just because the D&D did not do well on the Dyno , does not mean yours would . I like the big y pipe on yours .

I'll see if I can get a pic of that particular pair of speed bumps, they're bigger than any other I've ever run over and there's a dip on one side of it that makes it even worse. The only safe way to go over it is to pop a small wheelie, but it's going around a corner, which makes it a bit more difficult.

The test mule has arrived. I haven't seen it in person yet, but it's there. I guess the first treatment it will get is a new set of spark plugs and some O2 sensor bungs since it didn't come with them from the factory. Wideband sensors, then a dyno run in the stock configuration.

Oooooooh yeah, I've got some ideas already! I'll try to document the mess as I go along. I have some theories about the stock setup and what needs to be done. The rear header pipe is dented in a little from a low speed crash but I don't think it's going to ultimately kill the output numbers from the engine. I'll try to get it in for a dyno run sometime in the next week or so if possible, but the weather will be turning to poo shortly, so it might be a while. Mmmmm, this looks like it could be really fun. I don't know what kinda numbers I can get out of it, but I'm going to shoot high. If I totally bomb out, it happens, but I definitely have some stuff I _really_ want to try out. If I'm correct, it will be a partial exchange setup for the headers and a new muffler body. Damn, I'm getting excited about this and I haven't even done anything yet!

One of my favorite expressions from a while back was "Go big or go home". I'm going to go big.

Stainless, not much louder than stock would suit me

If it were me designing an exhaust for the XB line, I'd do what Jon (Nittanyxt) just wrote. The market is ripe for an exhaust that is stainless, sounds good, but isn't too loud. Power is great, but a pipe with just a little bit more growl than stock would sell better than a loud one that made lots of power. I get folks asking for an exhaust like that all the time.

+1 Al,somewhere between stock noise levels and the P&A race pipe would be sweet. While I like a good loud exhaust (twin D&D on my 900SS and a drummer clone on my 'bolt) it gets old in a hurry when on a multi-day trip. After 4-5 hundred miles it's like you've had your head in a metal trash can while someone beats on it with a stick. Ye, I do wear ear plugs!

I'll probably do at least 2 different pipes, one will be a larger (7" diameter?) oval shell, maybe 15-18" long, the other will be the dual setup like the current RT-4. There's a possibility of getting some CF stuff, but I'm not a big fan of it. If I go that route later, I'll post it up then.
I have some other stuff I absolutely have to try and it will not work with the completely stock headers, so I guess I'll have 4 possible options right off the bat. 2 for the stock headers, maybe, then 2 that will require a modified header but will in all likelyhood make more power than everything out there except for a full on race system. Yeah, I'm thinking big here. : )

Only if your priority is peak HP. If I recall correctly, no other slip-on came close to beating the D&D in mid-range. So if you want big mid-range and are willing to sacrifice peak HP, it would be the best performing exhaust out of the group. It just depends on what kind of performance you are looking for. It's not a race muffler. That said, I've seen and XB9 fitted with one win more than one race.

84.8 hp sound about right for bone stock?

I must also add, this thing is pretty quiet, even more so than the 1125 with a stock pipe.

Ok, materials on the way. I'm going to do a dual 4" setup first using the stock headers.
O2 bungs are ordered for the sensors. Looks like work is piling up again though, I'm hoping for a short break at Christmas to do the prototype stuff.

Ditto!

Stock setup sounds great under WOT with the valve open and the RPM's up high. Everywhere else, it is nearly silent. Again, I too, believe a 'quiet' exhaust would make you a very busy man!

Well, 4" won't fit. Had to use 3.5" shells instead. Got it together today, it sounds reasonable enough. Iphones aren't the greatest for recording audio, it washes out too easy.

Dean, is this going to clear the Uly/XT side stand? If you are not sure, you can send it to me and I will do a test fit for you.
Is there going to be any type of bracket on the front end?
I might have to get another job to pay for one of these.

Well, I ran it today, hauled it in the truck. Previous run, 85 hp. This time, 94 hp. No fuel changes, although I think it will make more power with extra fuel. It ran about 15:1 or so throughout the middle of the powerband, so it could certainly use more. I'll post pics of the dyno charts later.

I guess that makes it about a 10% gain for power?

(Message edited by d_adams on December 31, 2010)

Stock run.

New pipe, no fuel changes, stock ecm.

AF ratio, it's a little lean, but not bad.

Dean, nice work as usual. Looks loud, but hard to tell from the video. Any plans to get good sound measurements compared to stock and/or another aftermarket pipe (like a Drummer or Race pipe)? Cuz like I've said before: if someone can eliminate the helmet drone I had with my Drummer, I'd be all about another 10 hp.

If it doesn't hit the stock muffler, then it shouldn't hit this one. The stock shell is about a 7.5" oval, these are 3.5" round cans.

I'm new to the xb side of building stuff and only have one here to mess with. Post a pic of what you're concerned about and I'll see if I need to make changes to the design.

If this is it, the outlet is below the trailing end of the kickstand I think.

Nice job . I like loud , but the people on my block don't . Oh well......
You know , the price of these pipes is going to be a determining factor with a lot of people , unfortunately , in this economy .

I see where the money is going , it is a quality , hand made pipe .

Dean, I wish I could send you my bike, but unfortunately, I've been snowed in for about 2 months now. Hopefully the roads will be clear enough to be riding sometime in April again. Gotta love them long winters.
