Ive finally found an engine (05 6600km) for sale here on the local yahoo Auctions. Its from a bike that has been crashed. After a bit of detective work, looking at the other parts he has for sale, it looks like the bike went down on the left side, smashing the gear shifter. Buying this would save me a lot of headache and cash, as Im still not 100% whats wrong with mine and getting all the necessary parts to "maybe" fix it is a gamble. Anyone else had luck or no luck with buying an engine from a salvaged bike? What would likely be wrong with an engine that had been through such an incident?

Heres a link to the auction. They guy claims that it looks great but is giving no guarantee.

It looks really clean, I wonder how long they spent blasting it with walnut shells?

Bent shifter shaft might be the only issue unless they replaced the side cover.

How much would it cost to have one shipped from the USA? There are a few recyclers on ebay that make videos of the machines before they take them apart. Or have someone locally check out a wreck of for parts bike for you before sending cash. I guess it comes down to the cost of shipping.

I would ask the seller for a picture of the bottom left side because if it is damaged it is to the lower part of the tranny

Im confident this engine is as clean as it was the day it was crashed. Ive bought from this guy before. He must strip about 20 bikes a week and they all go on the auction with no reserve on Sunday nights. I saw an undamaged frame go for $11 the other week and a 08 12 engine for $400. As for the shifter and primary case i can take them off my bikes engine. Im getting excited, 6 months the bike has been sitting int he shed.

Sure does look clean. If I were interested in buying, I'd ask him to remove the primary cover and photograph/inspect the case casting around the shifter shaft. If that got bent in the wreck, I'd make sure the case was still good. Having to get another case half would likely invalidate the deal unless you have the parts and the machine time.

Make sure the front mounts to the head (where isolator bolts on) aren't damaged. Depending on HOW the bike fell, sometimes these two mounts can get boogered.

If you got a good deal, I wouldn't worry about it.

No guarantees... of course the internals are going to be as good as the rider who maintained the engine (constant over-revving, proper oil levels - usual questions)
