So i just pushed my bike like 1/2 mile home, in Phoenix. Just wonderful. It started up just fine. Then I rode like 1/4 mile to a stoplight, it idled for a few seconds, then cut out. Started it right back up, then it cut off again after a few seconds. Then wouldn't start again. Then battery died. Have had similar issues like this for a while now. No blown fuses, good battery connection, good oil. Any ideas? Sell and buy a new one?

Sounds like the wire under the seat problem. Runs until you sit on it?

No, I started it while sitting on it. I checked the wires. Recently went through and cleaned up every connector I could get my hands on, and put dielectric grease on as well to prevent corrosion.

Even though I ride my bike everyday, it still seems to need the battery tender. I do ride a lot of short rides, to and from work(mile each way). Since I have started using the tender every night, she seems to run much better, and the "cat sneeze" is gone now.

I don't have much to offer but I think it's early to sell and buy a new one. Why not bring it to a motorcycle shop and let them fix it? If the problem happens every time it won't be hard to re-create and troubleshoot for someone who works on bikes for a living.

Try the tender suggestion first, especially if your riding is less than half an hour and not frequent. It's almost the symptoms for a weak battery.

Rule that out first.

The tender is cheaper than the shop but if you end up needing the shop, well, you have a tender you can use forever.

Yeah, good point. I will give that a shot. But it really is pretty random. Sometimes I will ride for a few weeks, no problem. Then I go to start it up and it just won't go. I'm thinking fuel pump problem, b/c sometimes I wiggle the wires and it starts up... But thanks for the help guys!

Well it started up a second ago. But I just bought a charger. I guess it has mostly been sitting for the past month, in the AZ heat. So I'm gonna give it a full charge and see what happens.

Run a diagnostics check with ecmspy, this will narrow it down for you. Also check ecm loom for rubbing, especially on the negative terminal.

This is a very common problem, however the solution is not.

The electrical wiring on the Buells is extremely poor, resulting in two major problem areas:

1.
a.wires rubbing through the insulation causing intermittent shorts. These are very tricky to track down.
b. Wires breaking causing intermittent lack of continuity. This is much less common.
c. bad ground connections resulting in intermittent lack of continuity. This would be the battery connection and other grounds.

2.
Problems caused by failure of connector #77. This connector connects the output of the voltage regulator
to the battery.
This is a very common problem because the connector is improperly sized for the load. The connector is located under the front pulley cover.
The solution is to replace the connector with a heavier duty item and repair any damaged wire in the area.
It is very important to check this out, because it can eventually cause problems with the stator and voltage regulator.

Patience and an highly organized work flow are the keys to solving this problems which has driven lots of bad webbers crazy.

Check the knowledge vault. Very hard to find stuff in it, but all the answers are there. The Google search engine is often very useful.

How about some other old timers chiming in?
