I was ridding thru okc mid day traffic and I noticed a little tricked out moped desperately trying to catch me; we meet at a stoplight and he leans over and warns" hey man, watch those hard shifts, your belt will break!" I said really , as the light changed i stood it up on its end and rode it thru to the next light, was this guy for real?

It's not hard shifts, but rather backloading.

The earlier XB belts were prone to failure from mishandling / installation (twisting the belt).

Also, reverse loads generated upon coming back down from a wheelie and other hooliganism is hard on them.

I think is more "luck of the draw" with the older belts.

I have over 27K on my original 04 XB belt with multiple trackdays on it and hundreds of wheelies. Others have not had 1/4 of the miles or abuse mine has taken and have had belts snap.

Did the guy on the moped look like this?

If so, I'd just keep on riding!

Seriously though, the guy obviously doesn't know what he is talking about.

I haven't had a bit of trouble with my belt since I switched to the new "all steel" model.
