Well i thought my was to fat to power wheelie in first but appearantly i just never whacked it far enough open soon enough. Was talkin to a couple friends after work tonight and they took off. So i turn around and got goin straight and twisted the throttle and all of a sudden the front wheel came up, and gentaly back down. Kinda freaked me out, its the first time ive actualy wheelied on anything.

Hehehe ...

The same way I thought it wouldn't come up in second with just a twist of the throttle ...

Until I accidently hit the right revs to slam the throttle wide open ... wooopiee!

Scared the outta me honestly 'cos I never expected it.

Kind of enlightening ain't it? I know exactly what you mean...I don't do wheelies very often on the street bike since it is a little scary the bike being heavier at all. All I can say is use power to control how it goes up and down. The brake is for emergencies until there is enough practice.

However I love doing em on my dirt bike...real real easy with the YZF450 I have...the acceleration on that thing is brutal and it is a four stroke too!

when i first bought my buell, i was doing WWI (wheelies without intent) all the time... and they scared me! now i've learned how to keep both wheels on the ground... most of the time.

About what RPM are you at in second that you can pull the front wheel up just using the throttle? I can only get the wheel up 1st to second by winding it right out in 1st, the a quick shift to 2nd, and right on the throttle again.

I'm not sure. Like I said I was accidental.

I shifted near or at the revlimit to 2nd and wacked the throttle like a brainless moron.

Mind you the bike was completely stock when that happened.

i dont think u CAN get it up in second without using the clutch
i did it the other day at about 4500 n half clutch came right up n came up FAST
be careful when u try this hold on with ur KNEES

at 2k whack the throttle, keep your arms stiff and lean back
if my 12 can get my fat but up then you should have no problems.
Extra bonus: right before you hit the limiter
it should creep up again

Signguy - that's all well and good - you have a XB12S - 420 has a XB9R. 'S's have less weight over the front end, both in terms of bike and rider positioning.

Trust me, the XB9R will NOT wheelie if you whack the throttle open at 2K in second gear. At 2000RPMs on a XB9 you're lugging it.

FWIW - I'm not a 'wheelie' guy. Almost all of the ones I've done have been unintentional, usually just from slamming second.

thats because you have an xb12. read xb9 will not wheelie if you whack the throttle open at 2k in second. ive tried.

You should be able to wheelie with just the throttle in first and second gear on either bike if you want to without the clutch. On my sv I can power wheelie in first and pull it up with just the throttle into a stand up in second. Cant wait till next year for the xb, power wheelies are great if you do it responsibly not stupidly, do it on a back road with no traffic.

well ya CANT on a 9
gotta WORK to get em up in second
let off half clutch back on let off clutch
all in one smooth motion n it comes right up in second
the trick is SMOOTH or it comes up WAY TOO FAST
practice makes perfect

I test rode a 9r with a race kit, and the wheel did come up (inches) a lot when shifting to second. i did a couple wheelies in first, and it came up real fast, i can see no reason why someone with some decent skills couldnt throttle it up in second, but i didnt try.

some guys can do it, some cant, you can explain it to death, but either you can, or you cant. my buddy does crazy wheelies on his GSXR, at all sorts of speeds, and incredible distances. i paced him on the freeway once, and he was riding a standup wheelie at like 75mph, and he rode it like that for so long, the engine died from oil starvation. ive tried on his bike, and i might never be as good at it. its kinda like swimming, either you are really good at it and it comes natural and is relaxing and easy, or its more forced.

remember, no matter how good you think you are, theres more than likely someone in town thats better than you, so just ride and have fun, but be safe. believe me when i tell you that looping a wheelie is EXPENSIVE.

I end up doing WWI all the time in first and second. Any tips on how NOT to? Just last night I was lined up a stop with a buddy and he took off like a rocket. I rolled on it to keep up but had to keep easing up on the throttle to keep on the ground :/
Is there anything I can do with the suspension to reduce WWI?

my 9r with drummer, 12 airbox, race ecm, and k&n will come up in 2nd without clutch in a standup if you compress the front suspension and whack it at 5000rpm, but it won't come up in a sit-down unless I am on an incline.

I believe ya Ingemar. On one rare occassion, my Cyclone lifted the front wheel after shifting from 3rd to 4th, no clutch, just a perfect speed shift and throttle wide open at ~85 mph as I crested the rise heading for turn two at Oak Hill Raceway.

420, mine will come up in 2nd also. I have a 9s with the race ecm and D&D. Its a little tricky, you have to get it into high revs around 4500 to 5000 then let off and then nail it while pulling up and leaning back.

And I don't even have the 12s airbox cover yet.

My 9R won't come up in 2nd without a dump of the clutch. 1st gear I need to chop it off/on at 4500rpm.

My 9R would loop if I let it, shifting from 1st to 2nd at 6500rpm.

2nd gear power wheelie = stand-up, compress front and nail it at 5k. Or it'll power wheelie in 2nd if I sit down on a nice hill.

Shifting to third with the wheel up is what scares me...

Powerwheelie....er, my riding pal's "daily ride-to-work" unit is a heavily breathed on Hayabusa with a 3T over reat sprocket.

He indicates it could be a handful for the inexperienced.

I think that's an understatement.

: )

I haven't really made any effort to perform any wheelies, nor have I made any real effort to attempt to even bring the front wheel up at all. But there have been a couple of times while taking off that the front wheel has come up slightly, UNTIL yesterday.

Here's the deal, I fire the 12 up and go to take off. Now mind you I'm on base in front of a crowd and I see an MP down the road, so I'm gonna take it easy. I try to take off nice and slow, my gel insert gloves are pretty warm because it's 107 outside, and they fit fine, not too big. As I take off and open the throttle slightly, the nice warm gloves with the gel inserts on my palm shift, causing the me to open the throttle even more, lo and behold the front end came up QUICK about 9 O'clock, CRAP, Hope the MP's didn't see me. Everything turned out fine. Kept my cool, took off like nothing happened and if the MP's did see me they didn't care.

(Gotta remember I'm not on the Blast anymore)

Draoidh, There have been a few times I've taken off pretty quick and what I usually do for those is to start with both my feet off the pegs and shift my weight as far forward as I can, that and/or short shifting it. That's not a 100% gurantee, hell look at drag bikes. They stretch out the wheel base and lower them and they can still come up. Short wheeled based bikes, great torque and HP and it's gonna want to come up no matter what.

My last post on 2nd gear wheelies 'cos I really don't think it's worth all the fuss.

I installed an airbox mod similar to the xb12 airbox cover (http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/32777/60071.html?1086460176).

It definitely feels faster, but more so higher up the revs than in low-to-mid range.

So, on a quiet road, I shifted into second and steadily brought her up to 5000-5500rpm and held it there for second. Then (catched some fresh air) and WHACKED IT!

...

Came up more than I've had it up before and since I'm a piece of chickenshit I quickly closed the throttle and squashed my testicles.

As you can imagine it wasn't a particularly cool wheelie ...

Man, I gotta practice being cool more ...

but with my setup there just aint enuff grunt to do that ive tryd it a million times n its kinda pissin me off
i have been practicing using the slip clutch way n starting to get semi good results with it (practice practice practice)
still not as fun as sitting on the air box n riding one in first till the rev limiter hits
but thats a WHOLE DIFFRENT WORLD of scary
