I poked around my 12R with a stethoscope today (I thought my primary chain was loose) and found that the rear head is making a good deal more noise than the front. It's a tick/clunk noise. I kind of doubt it's the case, but it almost sounds like a lifter has collapsed a little and I'm hearing the pushrod strike the rocker then the rocker strike the valve. It gets worse as it warms up. It's not REAL loud or anything, but I hadn't really noticed it before and it's definitely louder than the front. I just changed the oil to Castrol Syntec 20W50 and when checked hot (five or six times since Saturday) the level has been towards the upper end of enough.

Just for the record -
I park the bike, place it on the kickstand, turn it off and quickly check the oil. That is the proper procedure? I would imagine that it would read low if I checked it level.

I put in 2.5 quarts including the 4oz in the filter. This is the second time I've changed the oil and I seem to have been successful the first time (4000 miles ago, and the dealer changed it 3300 miles ago).

Should it be driving me nuts or not?

/EDIT - Changed Roller to Rocker : ).

I guess this means I shouldn't worry?

nossir, I think it means no one that's willing to help diagnose this situation with the little amount of data you can presnet on this forum has tripped over this page

discribing sounds in a written manner is tough

also, as tuber rider, I have no clue as to the oil checking procedure on XBs

Thanks Dean. I was thinking that might be the case and I'll wait for it. I hate to "Ride it till it seizes" but it doesn't sound like anything is too terribly wrong...
