How much wider is the 04 belt than the 03? I know the tooth pitch is 14mm. Right now I have no belt guards on and am apprehensive to do that long term but I won't put the originals back on. I'm thinking some protection goes a lot further than none.

Not sure I follow what you're getting at.

I could be wrong, but as I understand it the '04 belt is not interchangeable with the '03. To upgrade to the '04 belt (Goodyear) you need to replace sprockets and some other stuff (around $600 cost).

There is a second generation Gates belt available for the '03 bikes. Also, the '04 belt guards bolt right on to the '03's if that's what you mean by "some protection."

Mike.

yea 04 belt gaurds look grand.
and the belt space between each tooth is different. youll have to switch the sprockets as well. look at the milled r sprocket from buell. i think it's cheaper than stock. diamond cut do they call it?

I know the belts are different and NOT interchangeable. What I am proposing is using 04 belt guards on an 03 belt and pulleys. Yes, i know the old belt is a little narrower but what I don't know is how much, 1mm, 2mm, 5 mm.. Like I said, i have no guard on now and will not put the 03 guard back on. It's too big and makes it too hard to service the rear tire/wheel and belt. I understand there is risk here and accept it. I recently put the updated Gates belt on.

What's this "upgraded" Gates belt? Anyone have a part#? I don't have the 03 belt guard on anymore....I hated it...ugly.

G0500.02A8R <~~updated '03 Belt for XBs.

Use the search function, guys, that's what it's there for!

And yes, the pitch and tooth number is the same on all '03 belts. It is a direct swap.
