My 08 lightning has always had the lean surging and hunting issues. I tried a lot of things to get this to go away including datalogging (I had an early 08 so was able to do it), update of the ECM, and a new ECM, all to no avail. Finally through the help of a friend and with ECMspy read, tuner pro, and the files available on ecmspy.com I was able to get the problem to go away.

I disabled the O2 sensor and locked my max and minimum AFV at 100. Since then, no surging or bucking and the bike pulls strong. I am very excited and happy. I would like to thank Gunter for supplying ECMspy read and the tuner pro files and Xopti for making us all aware of the tuning options available. Also, thanks to Xbswede on this board for the help in the tuning.

Oh...no.....be ready for the "o2 lockout" demons to raise their heads and tell you how bad that is...

Despite both cars and bikes ran without them for years.

Good to see you got things to your liking and "properly" mapped.

I had the o2 sensor turned off on mine for a while. It ran good, but cruising on the freeway the check engine light would always come on.

If the check engine comes on after some cruising, turn the o2 sensor on and only lock the AFV to 100 min and max, that solve the problem with the check engine light.
I had my bike mapped on a dyno and after that it runs perfect.
The only problem I had was that the light came on after some cruising exactly as you describe. But do what I did and its OK

I also have an early 2008 XB12 and it ran like crap when I first got it.
They reflashed it and it runs really nice now.

The problem: if you reflash yours to the newest code, ECMspy won't work with it.

I wouldn't be too stoked on defeating the closed loop operation of the ECM. There goes your fuel economy and clean plugs.

You can tune the '08 and newer ECMs, you just have to do a bit of research on the web and figure it out.

Well, the bike ran like crap with the 02 enabled and I had lousy fuel economy to begin with, so your warnings fall on deaf ears. This has been an ongoing problem for a very long time. I've reflashed, gotten a new ECM, data logged, the works and this is the first time it has run well. I also haven't done anything permanent so if/when the new ECMSpy comes out and I can datalog I can always turn the sensor back on.

Can you give me the details of the binary and firmware you're running, please? It's true... the stock tune is pretty crap.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by that, but I'm using BUE1D130 06-05-09.
If you have some advice on how to improve the mileage and/or performance with the O2 sensor enabled please do share.

O2 police...

you just lost auto correction. your afr will run wild at different conditions now.

set the o2 scale to run at a lower afr and it will be fine with the O2 on.

Removing the o2 is like putting a small bandage on a major cut. Sure it covers it for now but doesnt fix it. you will end up with a big scare that cost more to fix later.

These fixes are hitting starting to show up. it takes time for the No 02 on a EFI system to screw it up. IMO its like smoking (i know blast me!!!) one cigerett or a weeks worth wont kill you but many years worth it will build up and kill you.

None of these guys unhooking have any way to report its fine over time. the bikes are 08 and newer and its been done in the last year mainly. issues are starting to pop up from guys who have done it. over time you will see no O2 is bad news in EFI.
But who knows best. the developers of EFI and bosche or a tuner with a couple years time.
I would put my money on bosche and the efi developers. Not the tuner with little time compared to the corporate developers. especially one who copied others works and gathered data from people for free to sell it back. Its not a carburetor vented to atmosphere. Its a sealed solid state system.

look up the laws of EFi and efi101. it states why.

Going on 20,000 miles with no O2's and two years of riding my 08. Never fouled a plug, always runs smooth.

My O2's where back on for a few days when I received the newest flash but was no where near as smooth as when off.So off they went again.

Hey Mike -

As noted, many cars and bikes were designed "without" o2 sensors and they ran and still run fine. My 03, R1 with 98,7xx miles will attest to that fact.

My CR is running well at just over 10,000 with no o2.

Do the o2's change things as wear occurs, yes, they do, but careful attention to the engine can trip the idea to manually change things also.

This would all be somewhat unnecessary if Buell would have given us at least sorta good maps for a stock engine...!
