I don't know very much about engine dynamics/design, so I have a couple questions regarding the information about the Diablo turbo concept talked about in the Cycle World article.

First, I thought one of the high points of the Aerocharger is that it doesn't require a wastegate because of the increased control over boost. Why then was a ECM controlled wastegate necessary on the Diablo?

Second, I know many people have worked on turbocharging XB12s, but the higher compression also makes charge cooling much more important, correct? Has anyone ever considered putting 12 pistons in a 9 in order to decrease compression in order to decrease the chance of cylinder knock with the boost? Would the shorter stroke of the 9 also help performance? Aerocharger makes a kit for the Victory Vegas which provides 6-8 psi of boost at the stock compression of 8.7:1. My rough calcs put the compression of a 9 with 12 pistons at around 8.0:1 even. So, perhaps 10-12 psi would not require intensive cooling at that compression level?

Lastly, the mounting location shown in the Diablo pic is ingenious. It appears the exhaust can easily come from the stock header location and exit towards the rear as necessary. Does anyone think that an Aerocharger would easily fit into the chin fairing without too much work?

This is more for discussion's sake than any actual desire to create something as I definitely don't have the expertise or $$.

Why take the time to swap out the XB9 pistons for XB12 pistons when the XB9 pistons work great with boost already. I run my XB9 with 5psi of boost and no intercooling of any kind and it runs great. There's a common miSconception that the compression has to be down to 8-9 range to run boost, on an old engine with a carburetor and/or crappy tuning that is true. With modern fuel injection systems and good tuning that's not the case.

Just finishing a top end rebuild this weekend so eventually I'll be turning up the boost to 10psi, I'll consider intercooling then but I'm going to test first and find out, keeping a close eye on compressor discharge temps as I gradually increase boost to 10psi.

I haven't read the Cycle World article but I can't wait to see some pics. I had e-mailed Erik Buell a few months ago with a pic of my turbo Buell and that's when he told me about how the XB's were supposed to be turbo'd anyways.

Also no a turbo doesn't easily (or at all) fit in the chin fairing area, I tried that already, ground clearance issues.

He knows his turbos, what else needs to be said?

yup sounds like he has quite a bit of experience with a turbo on a 9. the only thought I have is my desire to see dmtaft's bike the turbo layout routing for the piping and some videos of it running down the street. even better if they are with the front tire in the air : D

turbo Buells are so sweet!

I read the Cycle World article and saw the picture of the Diablo concept, very stoked to see the turbo mounted below the engine (like mine). The definite plus of the aerocharger in that location is the self contained oil system, it turned out figuring out the oil system for my low mount turbo was way trickier/challenging than I expected.

Also in the article I think its possible the author made an error in saying there was an ECU controlled wastegate, I think the ECU controlled the vane movement in the aerocharger which effectively controlled the boost. Aerochargers don't need wastgates usually.

I also liked how they did there compressor ducting, I would do mine similarly except that mine is done in such a way to easily add an air-to-air intercooler later, but if I end up not doing that I might change it.

If only there were better up close pictures of the Diable turbo and how it's oriented, oh well.

Here's a couple pics:

I really should do a drive-by video so you guys can hear it

Sorry, I didn't mean that I didn't like what you had to say.

Thanks for your input. That is your blow-off valve that can be seen through the airbox, right? Do you think an aerocharger is any more compact (end to end) than a regular turbo? The ECM statement makes more sense as a mistake like you said.

Have you done any dyno pulls?

Yep that's the blow-off valve you see. I've never measured or compared an aerocharger to an equivalent flowing Garrett turbo, but from the cutaways (shown on there website) the aerocharger appears to be slightly more compact end-to-end, not sure by how much though. No dyno pulls yet, but I'll post up the results when I finally get around to it.

Did you change the cams so that there was no overlap between the intake opening and the exhaust closing?

Nope the engine is stock other than that I recently put in stronger cylinder head studs and Cometic gaskets. My goal was to see how well the stock engine could handle some boost and the stock cam overlap hasn’t been an issue. I’d say a stock XB can handle 5psi of boost no problem with some good tuning.

Did a little research...
Do a search for "turbo" on the Xboard, and this is a little sample of what I came up with, enjoy!

Yeah he made the switch to a low mount turbo beneath the engine as well, according to the Diablo concept that's where it belongs. Just unbolt the muffler and replace with a turbo. Last time I heard from him he sounded determined to break the 200HP barrier by doing some engine work.

When my "how many miles can I put on this thing" experiment is over and I decide to re-build, I may just add a turbo to the parts list.

BoostIsGood (formerly Turbo Connection) in Rapid City is/was developing a kit for the XBs using an Aerocharger. Be interested in hearing how their project is coming along..

I recall first hearing about that a couple years ago too, but I never saw a single picture of anything started or completed and by now I'm guessing its not happening, but I dunno.
