I noticed today that on either side of the swing arm (2005) there is a cut out section, about 2/3 of the way back towards the rear axle. I am wondering why no one has drilled and tapped holes there for sliders/spools? I don't anything interfering with that area, and it doesn't appear to be anywhere near the oil resevoir.... What do you guys think?

it's not that is hasn't been done....it has. most of us just have no desire to be drilling into our swingarms when it's not necessary...

Badweb sponsor KEDA designs has spools that will mount like that. Still, I won't be drilling my swingarm anytime soon.

I was just coming in here to look around and ask some questions. Funny that I should find this right away. Anyone with an XB (12 or 9, I think they're the same swingarm?) that has a set of vernier calipers handy, shoot me a PM, I might just have what you guys need.
I need a specific dimension on the swingarm, needs to be measured in the thousandths. If I'm right, I could possibly have a service only setup available for these. This style is not drilled into the swingarm, they are removable.

D - The XB's have 3 different swingarms. 2003-2005 XB (both 9 and 12), 2006+ XB except long wheelbase models (Uly's,SS,STT), then lastly all Uly,SS,STT models use the same swingarm. I lack calipers but do have a SS swingarm.

Well, you can test that year model for me some time next week then. Your parts are all here and I'll start welding tomorrow. I ordered 4 sets of spools, but they don't have them in stock. Closest dealer was either Chicago or somewhere in PA I think, so I had Gateway order me a bunch. I'm thinking $35-40 for the set without the spools, but with bolts and it's only $5 more for a set of spools anyway. I'm hoping they fit, I guess I can ask EBR for details if nothing else. They'd be the ones to know for sure.

Here's the pic of both types installed on an 1125. I just made a bobbin/spool to test with, so it's not a finished product. I ordered the 09/10 factory spools to either ship with or at least show what they look like. Either way, it's been load tested to 330 lbs, so as long as you don't sit on it, they shouldn't break. The block is aluminum but I don't know what the factory spools are made of yet, still waiting on them to show up.

My race bike is an 09, drilled the swingarm for the spools. Not a big deal at, pretty easy to do. I wouldn't anticipate any problems at all for a street bike. My only concern racing it, as much as I crash, is the spool catching on something as its sliding and tearing a hole in the swingarm. I guess that would force me to buy the adjustable race one then: ) As much as you change tires on a race bike, the through axle one would be a big pain in the you know what...

I did it, on my XB12R, though I drilled back as far as I could get a wrench to tighten the nut inside the backside hole in the casting.

I got blasted from many sides...from all the "experts"...for doing this.

Without my engineering background, I most likely wouldn't have done it. But given the arms design, I wasn't concerned.

That said, I did take some preventative precautions in that using a clean fresh drill bit and deburred of BOTH sides of the holes should be done. This takes a little work, but can be done.

These "extra" holes have been there for almost 10,000 of California's finest freeway (!?) miles with no signs of trouble.

Any YES...it makes work in the back of the bike MUCH easier. No clue why Buell "forgot" them.

Would I do it again...sure.

The axle spools....are great for removing the rear tire..........!

Here's both on an 1125R, should work on some XB models, mostly the newer ones.

I agree that I have no idea why someone so concerned with racing (Erik) would not have put some sort of spool or a place to put a spool. I have an interchangable stand, but lifting with spools as opposed to the "pads" is much easier.

D - intersting set up. Let us know if and when you get the XB spools sorted out.
