I was just checking the pressure in my tyres and I noticed something shiny on my rear tyre. I looked closer and sure enough, the steel bands are starting to come through but I only have a measley 6020 miles on them. Has anyone else had problems with Pirelli tyres? I just reckon that tires that cost around a 100 pounds a piece should last longer than 6020 miles. Please, any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Steve.

That's about double what I get in miles. And, yes, the steel was showing in mine also.

If that's clicks, that's pretty good too.

Advice: look for end of season sales.

Hogs is right that is pretty good mileage on tires. Motorcycle tires typically don't last as long as cars do.

If you want a longer lasting tire, check out the Diablo Strada. I get 10k miles out of the rears from new to the wearbars.

6000 miles is really good for a performance motorcycle tire. I wouldn't complain about that.

That is GREAT mileage. I was getting about 3500 out of the dunlops, recently switched to the Continental Road attacks. I will have to see how they last. I like them a lot better for handling than the Dunslops too.
Every 3500 miles, change the oil and a new set of tires!

So 6020 miles (9688 km) is good then? Hm, you'll also have to remember I'm only 61 kilos so it's not like I weigh a ton which would add to tyre wear. I also ran them a bit light on the pressure since I get shook to all bloody hell on bumpy roads even with my suspension tuned to my weight. Is there a great tyre out there thats made for semi-decent roads that also works well in rain thats decently priced?
Thanks again.

I vote for the Diablo Strada's. Others will recommend the Road attacks or Pilot Road 2's.

I'd recommend the Road Attacks, I'm on my second rear.

Play around with the suspension. Book is close, not exact. I had to go a couple of steps lighter. Book instructions are good and easy to follow.

Diablo Rossi, 4k of easy riding, <40% wear, rear is showing little centerline 'flat-band'.
Tread blocks are starting to scallop off centerline, both front & rear.

I'd be pissed if I got only 6k miles on a tire, but then again I got 18k miles on a Pirelli Scorpion Sync.

Oh, Diablo Corsa 3's on my 1125CR, im at 6500 miles, tire is nice and square, but still has some tread.

I'm not going to have a blow out on the way to work or anything might I? That'd be the shits, and would be my luck. Those Scorpion Syncs look nice, but if theres a kit to make the rear tyre a 240 Pirelli has a nice 'Custom 240' tyre. Is it alright to replace only the rear or would it ride a bit strange? I have Diablos, not sure which type, but since those Scorpion Syncs get awesome mileage I'd go with one of those instead but I'd rather not take a chance and find out have 2 dif tyres is a bad thing.

those Scorpion Syncs get awesome mileage

They do not get awesome mileage for everyone; they get awesome mileage for Froggy, because Froggy is a hypermiler extraordinaire and gets awesome mileage out of everything. They'll probably last longer than the plain diablo though, regardless of hypermiling prowess. I prefer the Diablo Strada though. I've been trying out different rears to try to find something that comes close in grip and mileage and so far nothing has. I can't wait to try the new angel.

Funny you call it an angel when Diablo means Devil, anyways, everything I've researched said having 2 dif tyres wont affect anything but found some nasty spills due to blow outs. When I tap the tyre it only feels like maybe 5mm of thickness at the steel band and thats a tad thin for my liking.

i'm starting to use pilot road 2's. got them on the m2 and will be putting them on the uly. but since we don't have very many curves down here the jury is still out on how they handle. so far i like the wear and the tread pattern in the middle opposed to the perelli's that come on the xt.

I just replaced my rear Diablo Strada at a little over 10,500 miles. Cords showing. Replace that tire! My opinion is get a new tire now, and I rode my Yamaha home in the snow and ice this morning. I don't ride on visible cords though. Froggy has a high mileage OCD. Your results will be different.

i got fed up with the Diablo's wearing flat at 2.5 -3,000 miles and screwing the handling up. i have michelin pilot road 2 ct's on my bmw f800 so got a pair put on my Scg. much, much better, and i feel more confident in corners than i ever did on the diablo's

i cant believe you got 6k miles on those diablos'

If you have cables showing through, best not ride it farther than the nearest place to get the tire changed.

Which Diablo's? Diablo is a series of tires, just like Scorpion is. Diablo's are all street tires, and the Scorpions are all dirt or dual sport tires. The Scorpion Sync is OE tire for the Ulysses X and some years of STT/SX models. The Sync is pretty good if you are doing off roading, if you are not, then ditch it for something that does better on the road. : )

I haven't touched a Sync since I started hypermiling, I am sure I can get more out of them now. : )

Michelin Pilot Roads (NOT Pilot Road 2CT)
i was averaging about 9,000 miles out of the back tire, and about 18,000 miles out of the front

Which are better the Scorpion Sync or the diablos

Scorpion Sync's excel at off road
Diablo's excel at sport riding
Diablo Strada's excel at sport touring.

They all work great on the street, they just have they're own specialty area.

I still like that Pirelli 240, now if I could find a 240 conversion kit for sale...

240 would be a bit fat for streets though wouldn't it? I can't remember right off hand but I think mine are like 180mm? They came with the bike so whatever stock tyres were for 09 XB12scg's then those are mine. My dad still cant comprehend that 9700km is good for my ass end tyre, but all he's rides is Husqvarna dirt bikes so thats like comparing apples to oranges when it comes to tyres.

Only thing a 240 tire would do is make it harder to ride in the twisties.

240 on an XB? Really? All you would need then is a stretched swingarm, load$$$$ of chrome and maybe some neon lights.
