I am 64 and have been riding for fifty years.
The last 4 have been on my beloved "06 XB12Scg.
It was the very best motorcycle for my needs (100 mile round trip daily commute in SoCal)
with a little riding on the weekends.
The Buell had 70,000 trouble free miles, did not use oil (Castrol 5W-50 Syntec) and still had the original belt and battery.

On 11/06/2009 at 3:50AM I was commuting to my job on the I-210 freeway when either someone bumped me or I hit debris on the freeway.
I skidded forever it seems but did not break any bones. I was able to hobble off the freeway and suffered no serious injuries.
The Buell was found 2100 feet from where I ended up.
The images will speak for themselves.
I guess 5 decades of riding have come to a end for me, but I went out on the very best!
Ride safe!

Yea...if you still enjoy it...hang in there.
I'm 59 and still drive the same So. Cal. freeways, 85 miles a day, plus weekends.
Currently either on my XB12R or my 1125CR.

As another said, hang out a while, and give it another chance.

Glad to see you made it out in good shape.

Mike

+1 to what Hogs said.
I have a good friend he puts 35-45k miles per year on his '77 goldwing at the age of 82. He says if he can't ride he'd rather be dead. wait till spring then decide if you are gonna quit or not.

It's a personal decision, but that aside, know that it'll take at least a season or two to shake a major get-off.

You're ok. The bike is just a machine. Do what it takes to get a good nights sleep.

I have both red and blue 2008 SCGs available.

I think your old bike would want it that way. : D

Yeah, my Grandfather quit riding a couple times. Once he was riding with his buddy, and his buddy T-boned a car and died. He quit for about two years after that one. Then, at the age of 80, he was having trouble holding up the Goldwing due to his legs giving out. So he quit. Two months later he shows up on a scooter. Said he missed riding too much to quit.
I'm glad you didn't get hurt, but I have a feeling you'll be back on the road soon as you're ready. Lets face it, it's in our blood. We can't quit.

Wow. Hell of a wreck! Glad you are OK! You got to do what makes you feel right.

A buddy of mine had the same problem when he crashed a couple of times in a year at 62. So far(two years) he is still done.

My father-in-law bought a Goldwing trike for his 80th birthday. He quit when he was 66 because he thought he was too old and the wife did not want to ride. Wholly crap, he can't get her off this trike! She loves it as much has he does. She told me she probably should not have fought him about getting one for three years.

Fx1200, Glad you're OK. I go to socal often and on the 210. In my truck. I always try to decide if I wish I had my bike so I wouldn't be stuck in the traffic, or I'm glad I have my truck 'cuz those people are crazy..
The other option is to not comute on A bike, but just use it for fun now and again. Either way that's A personal decision for you and I wish you the best either way you go.

Mike,
You can hang up your helmet if you want. That's a decision only you can make but 50 years of riding is a hell of a lot of history.

Please don't be a stranger around here. I would love to hear some stories now and then.

I got my CITYx for my 66th birthday in Feb. I am glad for your survival on the 210. I hope I don't have to make that choice anytime soon. I have to go on a trail ride Friday because the 50 year old kids I ride with need the geezer to inspire them.

Sorry to hear about your accident. Glad you are OK. Almost 66, been riding fast bikes since 1970. On my XB9R since 2004. Just got a 1125CR. This thing is scaring this old man, but i can't let the young guys have all the fun. Think about it for a while and check the classified ads, my XB9R is for sale. Terry
