Recently bought an '06 XB9. Looking at replacing the stock exhaust with something a little louder. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm a poor college student so I'm working on a pretty tight budget.

Econo-Drummer, Special ops are both very affordable. The Jardine can be had for next to nothing, but needs constant repacking and is stupidly loud.

Suggest reading the American Sport Bike review on their website. If you just want cheap and loud without regard to power, it's hard to beat Force (known as "FARCE")

Running with a Force exhaust guarantees that YOU will be the first one pulled over on group rides.

Yea I have read over the American Sport Bike shootout. Just wanted to know from people that have been using them what they preferred. Yes I know what you mean by the image enhancer comment. I just hate that someone in their riced honda will pull up next to me and all I can hear is my lifters ticking and their coffee can exhaust. I'm not looking for something as loud as the jardine though. Whats the difference between the Special OPS and the Drummer exhausts besides cost?

Hawk Performance! Just installed on my XB12ss and accelerates like a freight train and no hole in power curve. Great "deep" sound! Randy builds in baffles to keep proper back pressure, and at $175.00 for a modified muffler that has the best sound and "Great Performance" with stock fuel maps you just cannot go wrong. Also with race fuel maps unbelievable!

Drummer works great without any other mods...

I love the sound, at idle or 2,500rpm it sounds like a quiet harley. Get on it and it just growls like a Ducati never could!

Doesnt add much power overall but its all over... its not bias like a Race pipe (lots of top end, no low end) or a D&D (great midrange but weak top end).

I have the Jardine on XB12 now and don't like it, I'll switch to Special OPS or Drummer soon.

It's not the loudness but the tone. I want it loud, but the Jardine is not as "warm" or "throaty" as the other two. If on the XB9 I guess it would be even less "throaty".

I did all the research, so let me tell you your best choice.... considering performance, price, and sound, the Drummer is the best pick hands down. It has a small lift to your mid-range torque curve, sounds deep and NOT blatty (can-like), and can be had for about $400-$450. Go cheaper with a jardine or something else and you'll be replacing it soon enough.

You should re-map too since it pops a lot without a re-map. I was about to get it done but since I'm getting something else so I'll re-map then.

Let me remove it after work Monday, bring it to work to check for the shipping cost and tell you all at the same time.

I know about "can't stop grinning"... I'm supposed to install the Voltage Monitor and hack the "both headlight on" but every time I just want to ride non stop, and so ended up riding till dark...

Dallasb, this might take a bit longer... The dealer didn't give me back all parts when they switched to the Jardine, just the muffler, so they're looking for them or something.

They also said I can't reuse the original straps and need to buy new ones, is this true?

Is it an RT-1 for Buell Jardine? There are specific mounts and they should be fine except maybe getting a new rubber piece for the back mount. Otherwise I see no problem reusing the Jardine straps. It's the front exhaust pipe clamp that they recommend replacing every time. If you get a leak, replace it when it happens. The RT1 that I have is held in place buy a band in the front and a band in the back, so even if the pipe clamp completely fails the most you should get is exhaust blowing out of the joint until you get it fixed. Should be a safe risk.

Oh wait, I see the dilemma, you need the stock mounting pieces so that you can put on the other muffler. I had the same issue and had to buy used parts to get my stock muffler back on. I'm really tempted to buy some billet and make my own mount so that I don't have to remove the oil lines if I ever take that half moon rear mount back off.

By hawk performance do you mean Special OPS? Chris its alright just keep me informed on whats going on with the muffler. Right now I'm looking heavily into the Special OPS since its about a third of the cost of a drummer. Whats the sound difference between the two?

If the Jardine is the same as the one I had, you need to remove the half moon mount for the stock exhaust. The oil lines run through that half moon to get to the swingarm/tank. So you need to pull the lines to remove the half moon. And if you need the half moon replaced for your new exhaust, they will need to come off again to go through the mount. If the lines all run in a straight line to the side of the mount, then you might be able to cut the mount to put them inside again without disconnecting the lines. The used half moon I bought had this done but my 03 needs the lines run through the middle of the mount so I had to drain the oil and pull one end of the lines to put them through the middle.

Pretty much plan on having an oil change when this work is done. And it took me almost no time even though the vent line fitting had most of the corners rounded off and I had to use channel locks to get it. And I did it before I had my rear stand which would have made it much easier to deal with.

I was able to unscrew the fitting from the swingarm, plug the hole with my thumb and remove the half moon mount when I did mine. I only spilled about a teaspoon of oil, no big deal.

Andy, save up for the Drummer. I haven't heard anything about the Hawk.

I have the Hawk performance muffler on my 09XB12Ss. The bike sounds awsome and pulls like a freight train. Cost is great to at 175.00. Real nice deep sound. I had a jardine and hated it. Give Randy a call you won't regret it.

Phazernut, I know that "loud" is an incredibly subjective term, but can you try to describe how loud the Hawk is compared to stock or any of the other aftermarket pipes? I'm looking for something that's relatively quiet but sounds very bassy or deep. I'm a bit worried about the Hawk also because it's been described as a flowmaster-type baffle system. I don't like the flowmaster sound. It sounds like marbles rattling around a coffee can to me.

Chris-

Ignore the words above about the replacing the clamp...what your dealer meant was that you should replace the large straps that go around the muffler. Factory suggests replacing them every time removed, many do not ad reuse them over and over with no issue. YMMV.

Also, many people just cut a notch out of the rear bracket, so that the lines can slide through without removing them.

I think that I have some extra mounting pieces (rear mount, straps, etc.). What do you need?

It is louder than stock by a fair bit but not near as harsh as the Jardine or as loud. It has a very deep thump. At the dealer the other day it attracted a bunch of HD riders and the consencous was that it was the best sounding exhaust that they have heard. It does not have that marble sound you are talking about. To me it is a lot like a big block engine rumbling. There is a thread over on buellxb.com with some sound clips. Weather is the shits here so I can't go out to get any.
