I am looking at picking up a used XB9. My only concern is that the owner told me that the bike had been tipped over and had put a small dent in the aluminum frame. If you follow the seat down from the airbox...the dent is where the seat separates from the frame. Is there any reason to be worried about the integrity of the bike? The owner is supposed to be sending me picks which I will upload asap. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Interesting spot for a dent, what caused it? Usually a tipover will damage the part of the frame that sticks out, hence why the bikes come with frame pucks now to protect them.

Yea that's what I thought. The only thing that I can think of is that it fell on a curb. Nothing else is damaged from what he said. Any known issues for an 07 XB9 that I should ask about?

Well the guy has already fixed the spot that I was concerned over. I'm pretty sure all he did was bondo over it and paint it. What do you guys look for when you are interested in buying a used bike? Any tips for what I should be looking for or asking the previous owner?

Sorry, the first thing I look for is Bondo on critical components, like a frame. I'd rather see the damage and get my experts to check it out.

If the dent is small it can be considered cosmetic damage. If the dent is large the possibility exists the frame may have gotten out of perfect alignment. If there is no other corresponding damage to the machine it would seem unlikely this was a severe bashing.

No I tried to get pictures. The guy who did the work was supposed to take before and after but he didn't. The only pictures I have before the work was done are low resolution pictures from craigslist. It looks like it was about the size of a quarter at most. There are no signs on the header of a wreck and the frame pucks haven't been damaged and underneath appears to not be dented in either.

Agreed.

However, on a frame I want to see more details. I would rather take the gamble on a sale with the dent than somebody I don't know bondoing something I haven't seen.

Of course, if he simply did it before putting it up for sale and never mentioned it, I'd be none the wiser but I'd sure be ticked when I found out.}

So, just from the information that I've been able to give, you wouldn't shy away from the bike? As always any help will be greatly appreciated. This is my first buell so please be specific. Here are some pictures of the bike after the frame had been filled in and painted.

Note: The only thing that isn't in the pictures are the bar end mirrors...they were taken off to show that the left handlebar grip has some damage.

I WOULDN'T BUY IT THE HEADER IS DINGED on the right side the handle bar is on the left side is bent AS WELL as THE HEEL PAD IS MISSING THE BIKE WASN'T JUST KNOCKED OVER IT WENT DOWN GOOD IF THEY ARE NOT BEING TRUTHFUL THERE WHO KNOWS WHAT ELSE IS WRONG AND if the tires are new don't touch it if they are not look at the wear

Also the handguards and headlight grill are missing too, looks like they put on cheapo turn signals, where is the license plate bracket? They tore off every decal including the one showing date of manufacture and vin.

Appears to be a 2007 XB9SX, I would look elsewhere.

Yeah, that looks shady. The handle bar is definitely bent and looks like a lot of different shades of paint all over.

Take a ride to Bumbus HD/Buell in Murfreesboro and as for Fat Bastard (Jeremy). They are one of the best dealers you can find, I am sure Jeremy can find you something that wasn't wrecked for your budget.

Is that gap between the rear sub-frame and the mainframe normal?

The frame puck on the right side looks newer than the one on the left.

That VIN thing is worrisome.

Maybe offer $1000, you should be able to part it out for that much (if the wheels are true I'll give you $300 for them). Unfortunately he will be less honest with the next guy and not tell them about the bent frame, and will eventually pick up a used grip and clip on and have most of the damage hidden, even more so when he wraps the exhaust.

I questioned a guy about the lack of stickers on a bike, he never got back to me after that, what does that tell you? I'm sure it was an ex race bike and probably whipped, it ended up on ebay just after that and I didn't track it after that because I bought mine and stopped looking.

The VIN sticker removal isn't necessarily bad, I bought my SS with the decal removed, but I knew the previous owner, and the valid reason he did it. There is still a VIN stamped into the frame near the steering neck.

Some people hate the stickers, anyone with a custom color on the frame had to remove them too. Since one side has emissions info on it, it's probably illegal to remove them.

The frame is a different color than the footpeg mounts (see 2nd pic). Frame must have been painted.

Ok well I have found a different bike and am currently talking with the owner. He bought it at an auto auction which means that it has been repossessed. Has anyone dealt with trying to get registration done with this type of bike? He said that the title was clean.

No worries about registration. Auction does not mean it was repo'd. Just go over it carefully. I've seen vehicles that were rebuilt go through the auction. Just go over it as carefully as you would any other bike.

Repo means that basically the lien holder has legally taken possession. The ownership has transferred to the lien holder and they try to recover the lost funds through an auction. If the whole story is true, then the title will available right away.

I know that there is a risk when buying a repo vehicle since most of the time you don't know the previous owner. Anyone have any experience with buying a repo bike? If so how many miles have you put on it without having to put some major money into the bike. I know that each bike is different but I would like to get some statistics on it. Thanks guys.

My experience is based on two events. The first is an acquainance who buy repo cars at auctions, does minor work and resells them and makes good money.

The other is my van being repod years ago. I was in denial, I knew I was in trouble but I was hoping to get through it. I didn't think I would actually lose the van so I had no reason to let anything go bad.

Most repo's are on newer, to get the loan. Most are going to be upfront sales, to qualify. Most people are hoping that the repo won't happen.

It wouldn't bother me at all to buy a repo, except that a rider lost their bike that way. (However, depending on the local law, my purchase might go against the debt. One can hope.)

Just go over the bike with the same cautions you would see on this thread, like you would any other bike.
