Anybody have a part number for a FRAM or other type oil filter. I'm tired of putting on the cheapy from the dealer. The last one installed during a dealer service leaks like a cyv. I know everyone will say go to the knowledge vault or do a search, but frankly the search either sucks or doesn't work in my experience. Thanks in advance. | ||

Just wanna say that using anything but that $20 black thing they sell at the dealer will work better. F.Y.I. I have been using the fram for years, never leaked....(not the same one...you know what I mean) I bought 4 h-d filters in a row that all leaked at the seam of metal that gets rolled near the gasket. Save some money, and some headache. | ||

I prefer the Mobil 1 or Bosch, quality filters for less than the HD. | ||

I have installed about a dozen of them so far, the the one time it did leak, it wasn't tight enough. An extra twist took care of that.  | ||

Yeah, Never had any troubles with the Buell/HD one. Fram filters will NEVER touch any of my vehicles. NAPA filter is nice, not bad money even I'm running it on my bike now. Motorcraft is good too. | ||

The WalMart SuperTech ST 4967 appears to be made by Champion, the same company that makes the Buell filter. They are usually around two bucks at Wally World. Been using them for years. While you are there, you can pickup some five qt jugs of Mobil 1 15W50 for about four or five dollars per quart. | ||

I've opened a number of different oil filters and can vouch for the pictures many have seen on the internet. Worst filter = Fram / Penzoil. Yes, it's true, they are that bad. I just might run a Beetle screen filter than one of these. Good filters = HD, STP, AC Delco, Purolator Best = NAPA, Purolator ONE, Mobil 1, K&N. Best Value = NAPA Warning on selection - make sure you cross reference with the manufacturer. Just because an oil filter "fits" doesn't mean it's the correct model. If you get one with too low of a pressure relief setting can cause all the debris that the filter has captured to go right into the engine... | ||

All this is good information. For personal reasons I do not shop at Walmart, but I should be able to save money going to an auto parts store vs the dealer. | ||

I have been using "Mobile 1" filters on all of my bikes for many years, no problems. | ||

How can you say that SuperTechs appear to be built by Champion when every ST filter's number is the same as the Fram filter cross-fit? Think about it... I used to work at Wal-Mart in TLE (Tire-Lube-Express). (Message edited by Phelan on August 18, 2009) | ||

Glad you asked Ross. Just like judging a book by it's cover, perhaps judging a filter by its number does not tell the entire story. May I suggest a better way would be to put a Buell Filter in your right hand, and a SuperTech in the other, and having cleaned one's spectacles, ( I would recommend Plexus over Windex for this job ), closely examine the two filters. If you discover that all the details of construction and the letter markings are the same, one might reasonably assume that the filter "appears to be built by Champion". Of course, you might cut the filter open, to better inspect it, but I don't think you will find that to be absolutely necessary. As I have previously mentioned on this site, about this subject, Wal Mart can and does source products from different suppliers over time, just as Buell does. Hope that helps.  |
