OK, I know this has been posted before, but was unable to find it. Is the plastic/rubber snorkel that fits in the "ram air" to be removed for proper Race Kit installation? I had a Buell "tech" do the work over the winter and the snorkel is still there. Additionally, is there a requirement for my '03 Buell with the race kit to be ridden X number of miles for the injection to get itself figured out. My understanding is that was only necessary on the tube frame hot rods. This was according to the tech. Please, if you do not know the definitive answer from a tech manual, be so kind as to keep opinions to a minimum. I'm looking for the Buell tech answer. Thanks all and ride safe. Mark  Never Give Up! BTW....I did put 21 miles on it when I picked it up a couple weeks ago. The difference is fairly noticeable with the Race Kit and it has a really nice bark now. YES. Plain as day in the Race Kit instructions, you are supposed to rermove the snorkel. Bryan | ||

The ECM needs to "learn" the new settings. Riding the bike at a moderate, steady pace for 10 to 20 miles should be enough. When I removed the snorkel, added a race filter and installed the XB12 airbox then started the bike for the first time, it seemed like it was idling fine and running smoothly. But buckinfubba and others have said the electronics need to relearn the different air/fuel conditions so I rode for way over 20 miles. Yes, snorkel removal is part of the Race Kit upgrade procedure. Thanks. That guy didn't bother to look up the actual directions as it looks so simple right? Plug and play, right? What's to know? Dammit!!!  I will remove the thing and ride it again for 20+ miles. Darthane, I live near Tecumseh (southwest of Ann Arbor). This is the only XB these guys (Tecumseh HD) have sold so they seem to be learning on my bike. Joy!  They are always really nice about it though and do the right thing in the end. Perhaps we can meet at Beaver Creek for a beer, food, and a nice cigar on the deck this summer. OK......since it was not removed in the first place and now it will be.....do I need to have him reset the TPS again since I rode it 21 miles with the snorkel still in the bike? If you are Buell tech and answering, please identify yourself as such and tell me where I can tell him to read this as he obviously did not do it that way. He's a nice guy but seems to take the easy way out at the expense of doing the job right. It's a good thing I don't do my job that way. Ride safe and thanks again. Mark Never Give Up! | ||

Yet another post on this. After reading this stuff, I left a message for the tech that did my work. He called back right away (3 minutes) and said yes, remove it. I wanted the polished can, so my pieces were ordered separately and the regular set of instructions were never enclosed. Honest mistake I reckon and they always try to make it right. So, I'm going to take it off when I install the XB12 airbox cover. Ride safe and thanks again guys. You ROCK!  | ||

Not a tech... The TPS shouldn't need to be reset. The TPS only needed to be reset with the install of the race kit because the ECM is swapped and that's where the TPS zero position is stored. | ||

Mark, if it's not too much of a drive, start going to American HD/Buell. My roommate's the Buell guy there (Spiderman on this board) and you'll be hard-pressed to find a more knowledgeable, enthusiastic Bueller within 100 miles. I'm definitely up for getting together sometime. I just need to get back in the country first! Ditto what M1 said. You shouldn't need the TPS reset, just ride the bike for a bit to let it adjust the map. Bryan | ||

I'm going to get up there to dyno it when I get the snorkel removed, XB12 airbox cover installed and the damn weather warms up. I've met Tony on a couple of occasions there before. I like his artwork in front of the door on the pavement. Ride safe. Never Give Up! |
